You'd have to think Correia is auditioning for a rotation slot next year. There are actually a few decent short-term free agents this offseason, so these last few starts might be the difference between the Giants sticking with Correia or going with short-term deal on a guy like Paul Byrd.

I hope we get one of the short-term free agents. Correia would be a serious weapon in the 8th inning. He might be our best relief pitcher.

by rotorueter on Aug 24, 2008 11:32 AM PDT reply actions

Really?

You think Sabes would pick up a one year deal? What about Lowry coming back? Tim, Matt, Dirty, Noah, Barry.

by KingofDucks1987 on Aug 24, 2008 11:32 AM PDT reply actions

There’s no harm if the pitcher is cheap. Counting on Lowry is way too risky. If we end up with too much pitching, we can bolster the bullpen or trade someone.

by rotorueter on Aug 24, 2008 11:35 AM PDT up reply actions

Yup. Counting on Lowry at this point is kind of a fool’s game.

It’s just a different kind of Rohlinger experiment. If he’s in the box, he’s both playing well and not playing well at the same time. But since it means that he is at least playing well, we’re keeping him in the box. Because when he’s out of it, we don’t get that half of the equation.

OT: Olympic combative sports medal question

I’ve noticed that in the tae kwon do competitions and the boxing competitions, the broze medal goes to two fighters instead of one. What’s the deal with that?

"While conservatives tell you 'leave things alone and no one will lose,' and liberals tell you 'interfere a lot and no one will lose,' baseball says 'someone will lose.' Not only says it - but insists upon it! ... Democracy is lovely, but baseball's more mature." BVCE supports SF Dugout and Manny Burriss.

by BaronVonCurrentEvents on Aug 24, 2008 1:00 PM PDT reply actions

I think because it’s an elimination event – since fighters climb the ladder up to the gold, there’s always the chance that the loser can be KO’d or TKO’d. They don’t want two fighters then going in to decide the bronze, since it’s possible one of them could have previously been eliminated by KO or TKO, and you wouldn’t want a boxer fighting so soon after that.

But then again, I stopped watching Olympic boxing about two games ago, so what do I know.

I’ll include my lame response from them when I complained about the paucity of HD games, especially considering there’s a whole channel just sitting there waiting for HD content:

Thanks for your inquiry regarding Giants HD. Out of the 136 regular season Giants game we show, 60 of them will be in HD this season, which is more than we’ve ever shown in a baseball season. Some of the restrictions to showing all games in HD include cost, production truck availability, and transmission availability. We agree that games in HD are drastically better in quality than SD games. Keeping this in mind, we’ve increased our projected HD events for 2008 to over 200 events.

While other markets may be able to provide all baseball games in HD, we have to spread out our HD coverage to all our Bay Area teams, including Giants, A’s, Sharks, Warriors and SaberCats.

Yeah. Especially since right now, at this point in the year, what other games do they need to worry about? Just the A’s. If they don’t have enough equipment to broadcast two events in HD at once, then they deserve to DIAF (if I may borrow BVCE’s phrase).

Actually, I was commenting earlier that his delivery seems a bit improved. His content still needs a bit of improvement, and his fumbling can be a bit distracting today.

I try to cut him some slack – he needs practice, after all if he’s gonna give broadcasting a serious go. But when you’re used to the well-oiled machine of Kruk and Kuip, it’s hard for a noob like JT to meet expectations.
