Around SBN: Jeremy Lin's Game-Winner Was Incredible, Worth Remembering

Scott Barnes

He's a 20 year old lefty, and he's currently owning the minors. He pitched today and got the tough luck loss. He went 6 innings giving up 1 hit and 1 earned. He walked 1 and struck out 14. This year with the AZL Giants, Salem-Keizer, and Augusta, he's 2-3 with a 2.15 ERA. He's pitched 37.2 innings and stuck out 57. Wow. That is bumgarner like K number. His K/BB ratio is 57/12. Does anyone know anything about this guy, velocity, etc. His numbers are extremely intriguing.

According to his draft profile...

After making a mechanical adjustment he went from throwing in the mid to high 80s to the lower 90s. Averaging 90-92 with his fastball and good sink. Throws a slider, changeup and show me curve. Apparently he has a pretty deceptive delivery with a head jerk in it. Sounds promising. Him and Aaron King intrigue me a lot.

Very interesting indeed. He certainly is getting a lot of K’s; i’d like to see the breaking stuff, as he’s probably got something nice there. I found some video on youtube of his delivery (from the cape cod league): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sWEiKONJ6rE

I’d add jarvis and the lively pick up to the promising list, as well.

Mitch Lively wasn’t drafted by the Giants. He was drafted last year by the Rockies, got shut down with an arm injury, and the Giants purchased his contract earlier this season. A poster on my blog said Lively touched 95 before his arm injury. I’m not sure what his velocity is now.

by RougeGorrila on Aug 24, 2008 12:20 AM PDT up reply actions

Sorry, a correction...

The poster said he threw 93-96 recently which led the Giants to purchase his contract. But this is still hearsay, so take it for what its worth.

by RougeGorrila on Aug 24, 2008 12:23 AM PDT up reply actions

yes, thus the added ‘pick up’ to what I wrote.

by haverecords on Aug 24, 2008 2:17 AM PDT up reply actions

oh sorry

I read it as the “Lively pick”

It is a lively pick, a lively arm...

The proof is in our minor league coaches and instructors…so if you’re a pitcher, do you want to play for the Nationals?

Hey, we need to make a t-shirt with that line on it, in black and orange and give it away at showcase tourneys and early season collegiate invitationals. We’d be helping our own cause!

Second day draftees rarely get any press unless they are first round talent that fell because of injury/signability reasons. I have a write-up of him here, the gist of which is he’s a legitimate prospect and you probably will see him in the upper minors sooner rather than later since the Giants have a habit of fast-tracking polished college pitchers (with plus pitches). The true test for him will be AA where pitchers with polish but fringy stuff (Ben Snyder, Dave McKae) can no longer get by on command alone.

by RougeGorrila on Aug 24, 2008 12:17 AM PDT up reply actions

This is not to say that Scott Barnes has fringy stuff, as his low 90s velocity is quite good for a lefty.

by RougeGorrila on Aug 24, 2008 12:24 AM PDT up reply actions

At this point..

I don’t think that low GB/AO line is telling at this point. What with a 45% SO percentage.

Good point. Also small sample size and all that.

by RougeGorrila on Aug 24, 2008 6:41 AM PDT up reply actions

yeah, that line tonight was something else

..and reading the recap makes it even more impressive. In the first, after an error, double, groundout, walk, and fielder’s choice, Barnes had faced five batters and gotten only one out. From that point on, Barnes faced 17 and struck out 14. I mean.. whew. Checking out that video and the one posted at the mlb draft tracker, I get the idea Barnes had a bit of the tall-and-fall disease. Fixing that could make a big difference.

That said, he’s a four-year-college lefty in low A. But for an 8th-rounder, these have been some gorgeous lines.

He was not a 4 year college pitcher, he came out as a Junior, but that doesn’t matter all that much. Maybe we can trade he and MadBum for Jason Heyward.

by FluLikeSymptoms on Aug 23, 2008 11:34 PM PDT up reply actions

hey, whatever it takes to clear up that egregious error of drafting Bumgarner instead of Heyward.

by FluLikeSymptoms on Aug 24, 2008 1:35 PM PDT up reply actions

how is it an egregious error?

we have one of the best starting pitching prospects in the game. would you really rather have another friggin outfielder when we could have a potential #2 starter instead?

by boonitez on Aug 24, 2008 2:20 PM PDT up reply actions

ok, you’re missing a running joke here. This guy wcw is obsessed with Jason Heyward and spent the first few months of the season talking about what a huge fuckup it was to take Bumgarner over him (he hasn’t mentioned this in a while though).

by FluLikeSymptoms on Aug 24, 2008 2:55 PM PDT up reply actions

oh, you sad little men

Heyward’s arm is not going to fall off. Bumgarner’s might. Heyward was the better bet going into the draft, and is the better bet right now.

Even I get tired of repeating that simple, little truth.

by wcw on Aug 24, 2008 4:27 PM PDT up reply actions

ha ha

I thought you had been silenced by MadBum being on the brink of winning the pitching triple crown as the youngest starting pitcher in his league. It turns out you have just tired of preaching the gospel to us heathens. I can see how it would be burdensome.

by FluLikeSymptoms on Aug 24, 2008 4:52 PM PDT up reply actions

your powers of prediction fail you

No great shock, mind you.

Me, I hope Bumgarner turns into the next Pedro Martinez. I am a fan, so I hope my team picked the second-best guy available and ended up with the first-best outcome. That wouldn’t make my current assessment wrong: it’s a probabilistic universe, and the betting money says the standout 18-year-old hitter gives you better odds all around than the standout pitcher.

In the distant event you’re not trolling, take a look at a dozen years of drafts and see how well great young pitchers treat their teams compared to great young hitters.

And if you are trolling, please see my previous subject line.

by wcw on Aug 24, 2008 5:07 PM PDT up reply actions

FWIW, I’ve read rumors that Heyward basically engineered his fall to the Braves by floating ridiculous contract demands to the teams ahead of them that wanted him. He apparently really wanted to play for the hometown team. I think I saw Keith Law say this somewhere on BBTF. I mean, he might be full of shit, but it is something to take into account.

And Heyward is great, but come on, let’s not sell Bumgarner short here.

Bumgarner, too

Viz http://www.saberscouting.com/2008/06/05/predraftmock2/

By the way, this is a strategy that is used commonly, and many times doesn’t become public as it has in this instance. Madison Bumgarner reportedly used it last year, but the Giants called his bluff and Bumgarner ended up getting just over slot money at #10, but not as much money as it’s understood in the industry that he would’ve gotten from a mystery team later in the draft that he was trying to get to.

Bumgarner has been great. His raw performance in low A has been better than Heyward’s. Bumgarner is probably the best pitcher in his league, while Heyward in the same league at the same age is a top-ten hitter. I take nothing away from Bumgarner’s performance: it’s superlative.

Thing is, Heyward is still the better prospect. Pitchers fall prey to injury and flameout at much higher rates, and age-vs-level matters a whole lot more for hitters. This is why Villalona’s year is so promising, despite the 25% K rate: he’s 17 in that same league.

ah

I was wondering if it was a joke i missed or not. my bad.

by boonitez on Aug 24, 2008 5:28 PM PDT up reply actions

four-year college as distinct from junior college

..and I’d be happy to trade Bumgarner and Barnes for Heyward and any other 8th-round hitter putting up equivalent stats in the SAL. Buehler? Buehler? Yeah, didn’t think so.

I liked him and King a lot as 2nd day draft picks. The Giants usually find decent pitching talent on day two.

From BCB:

LHP Scott Barnes, St. Johns University, 237th overall – Barnes, another lefty picked on the 2nd draft day, was ranked by Baseball America as the 128th overall prospect in their pre-draft rankings. Again, like King, not a bad pickup at this point in the draft. If you thought King’s delivery was wacky, Barnes is even more weird. It’s very segemented and choppy, he sort of juts his arm out behind his body as he motions towards the plate. It’s hard to describe, watch it on the MLB Tracker if you can. He’s definitely adding a little deception in his delivery that I’m sure helps his fastball seem a lot faster than it actually is. From the scouting video on the MLB Tracker, he was topping out around 89mph but a comment from BA states that he improved his tempo in the 2nd half of the season and was working 90-92 at times. He has an average slider with good tilt and a good feel for the changeup. Good find for the Giants.

by xanthan on Aug 23, 2008 10:26 PM PDT reply actions

I’m definitely interested in seeing how he does.

That said, his pitching motion may be a big part of his strikeout numbers. I’m a little wary of pitchers who rely on motion deception too much, though he clearly has good velocity on his fastball if he is at 91-92, and if his changeup is as effective as advertised, then he’s not a one trick pony.

That said, I’m going to view him with cautious optimism for now. He’s had some hot numbers after what was a rough start; admittingly there’s more than one explanation for that.

Let’s see how he holds up in his first full-season of ball, but that said….I’m looking forward to seeing what he can do.

Notice how he does the Lincecum-ish extra hop/stride with the lead foot right at the end?
