Open Gameday Thread, 8/23
San Diego Padres at San Francisco Giants, Aug 23, 2008 1:05 PM PDT
Oh, dang. I wanted to follow along with the Giants game, but the Dodgers/Phillies are on TV. I have to watch whatever game is on TV.
I hope Fox appreciates the four extra viewers they get with these blackouts. Maybe those four extra viewers put them at a nice round number, like 50,000.
It makes me absolutely sick when the Giants game isn't on TV. What are they trying to accomplish? Do they really think that I'm going to stop what I'm doing to watch whatever crap game they pick out? I can't remember the last time I've been so disgu...
Oh. Now I feel silly. Fox was looking out for us like a big brother. Boy, is there egg on my face. We owe you one, Fox.

Good thing Zito’s starting. We’ve fallen all the way to #6 in the draft pick race, with the A’s, Reds, Pirates, and Rockies all nipping on our heels.

Dirk Hayhurst
This will mean zilch to y’all but … A couple of years ago, I had the privilege of watching Hayhurst pitch the game of his life.
It was against the San Jose Giants, when they took Lake Elsinore to a deciding Game 5 of the Calif. League Championship. With all the marbles on the line (to mix as many metaphors as possible), Hayhurst went 7 innings and allowed only ONE hit, no walks. He dominated.
The bullpen promptly coughed up 3 runs in the 8th and the Giants won. But I’ve been kind of a Hayhurst fan ever since then… plus, he was doing a pretty amusing blog for some-or-other publication, calling it the Non-Prospect Watch or something like that.
Anyway, it’s great to see him get a crack at the Bigs, and even though it’s against the Giants, i’ll be secretly pulling for him.

Hard to argue if someone likes Joba better. But I agree bout the other 2. Of course the problem with Joba like Scherzer is can he stay healthy enough to be in the rotation? I still think Joba will end up replacing Rivera as the closer.

The argument for Joba over Lincecum would include Joba bigger, stronger body and it’s theoretical lesser potential for injury. But living in NY and having seen Joba pitch as often as I have this year, I like Timmy’s stuff better. It’s got more movement, velocity and he’s got a better curve.

roughly 1/2 his starts recently have been good
with the other 1/2 anywhere from bad to passable.
Not bad for a fifth starter at all. Oh, he’s #4? Well, still not bad for a 4th starter.

I'm guessing this has already been noted...
Just noticing that Pablo Sandoval’s minor league weight is listed at 180, while his major league weight is listed at 245.
Is this for real? He’s put on 65 lbs in four years?
Why couldn't McCovey have hit the ball just three feet higher??
by tobias on Aug 23, 2008 3:39 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
I think...
The logical explanation is that he was never 180.

Calling you out, Delorean!!!
We went over to say “hi” to Delorean, the lovely Mrs. Delorean and his parents. We all know that Delorean is the proud owner of a cool Yomuri Giants jersey that was given to him by the lovely Mrs. Delorean. So what’s he wearing at the game? A freakin’ Cubs jersey!!!
Unless it was a birthday gift that he felt obligated to wear it, he lost a lot of street cred here at McC.
Zooperstars, they quack me up!
by Goofus on Aug 23, 2008 4:55 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
there's an explanation
Bill Hayes got two cups of coffee with the Cubs in the ’80s—the lovely Tracy found out what number he had with the Cubs and got me a replica Bill Hayes jersey a coupla years ago. I showed it to Bill a in Scottsdale a while back, and he loved it. Allegedly he had a picture of me, him, and the jersey in his locker for a while.
I’ll dig the picture up and post it, but I don’t blame you for being confused.
Also, thanks for coming over to say hey — I was gonna do that in the 3rd, but Tracy said I should hang out until after the 4th. It was then thats I knew I was getting a scoreboard greeting!
Billy Hayes: His job is better than yours.

One other thing, the play by Burriss in the top of the 8th was completely insane. Just to get to the ball showed amazing range…and then he made a terrific throw with his momentum taking him toward left-center.
I’m guessing maybe there’s half a dozen second baseman in the league who can make that play.

Draft Picks
Why do some people want us to lose to just get a higher draft pick. If im not mistaken, we have had a CY young canidate and the best minor league pitcher drafted at the #10 spot. There is still great value through the top-10 picks. I want more W’s, youth, and respect!

Because once in a rare while an Arod type talent is in the draft and they only go to #1. I’m talking a sure thing like Junior or Dave Winfield. #2 won’t cut it.
