Who’s this Tim Lincecum? He seems pretty good.

I’m glad we won’t have to face Maddux in a Padres series anymore. Too bad he’s still in the division. Why can’t he ever be traded to an AL team?

no worries
If he sucks too bad, they’ll have him stop. It’s not like he’s more likely to be injured at 3rd than he would be catching.

The main concern is that this will give people more reason to suggest such future third basemen as Nate Schierholtz, Randy Winn, Travis Ishikawa, and Pat Burrell.
by jcb9 on Aug 22, 2008 5:55 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
It could have the opposite effect. I can’t find the exact quote, but I remember Doug Mirabelli saying something to the effect of “one of the worst things that can happen to a marginally talented player is overexposure”.
If Pablo humiliates himself, then it may quiet those outlandish suggestions for other players to do something similar.

Doug Mirabelli being the authority on marginally talented players.
by jcb9 on Aug 22, 2008 6:20 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
In defense to Doug, he was referring to a recent hot streak that was resulting in an increase in his playing time. It was a pretty humble statement.

In other Cub news, Carlos Zambrano is losing his teeth
Carlos Zambrano broke a molar in half chewing gum during his appearance on Thursday.
Trainers came out to the mound after seeing him grimace in pain, and he proceeded to spit out half a tooth. “It’s the gum,” Zambrano said. “It has a lot of sugar, and I keep telling my daughter not to eat a lot of gum. I’m not a good example.” The injury won’t affect his next start.

Imagine if we did get Strasburg, though. We could have a rotation of Lincecum, Strasburg, Cain, Bumgarner, and Alderson. Cain really would be a third starter!!! at best!!!

by operation carrot on Aug 22, 2008 6:51 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Well, at that point it would make sense. Let’s assume we are talking 2010 for that kind rotation. Cain would be our most expensive, and our second oldest starter. Considering that Jonathan Sanchez and Henry Sosa aren’t even included in the scenario above, I think we would have the depth at that point.

This is completely a counter-factual. I’m saying that IF jcb9’s rotation comes to fruition on a sustained major league level, then we should consider trading one of them. This is several years away.

Interesting thing on Baek
Padres pitcher Baek was Korean but he changed his nationality to United States. Because when he came to United Stated, he was being wrong against KBO (Korea Baseball Organization)’s rule, then dismissal from membership.
Dismissal from KBO, in South Korea, means you have no chance to play in Olympic or WBC things. If that, you have no chance to immunity from military service in South Korea.
So, if he didn’t want to change his nationality, he should came back to South Korea and being military service for 2 years but he didn’t. So… He made decision.
That’s why some Korea baseball fans don’t like him.

I did fake Chinese food. Orange chicken from Trader Joe’s, a quickie fried rice, and steamed broccoli and carrots tossed in some oil and ginger and garlic.

Orange chicken’s good stuff, even if fake.
We should have some for Chinese New Year next year, actually! I don’t know how we’ve managed never to make orange chicken for New Year. Must put it on the list.

My future roommates hosted me for Christmas this past year. My BFF’s wife is Jewish/Chinese so she doesn’t do Xmas. She made the whole Chinese feast for us: orange chicken (from scratch), real fried rice, potstickers, the whole nine yards. BEST
We’re also kicking around ideas for Seder in the spring. I cannot wait for that.

I think Kaine would have been a better pick. Executive experience, part of the outsider/change message, rising star, and being from Virginia didnt hurt.
But whatever, you’re right, Biden was no one’s least favorite pick, and boring, uninspiring consensus is good for this sort of decision.

Well, those are the younglings. As they age, the blood gets darker and bluer.

Ahh, the slaughter of Dodger younglings. Nothing makes me happier. It’s science too, you can’t spell slaughter without laughter.

Too bad
the sports writers are all over Webb for MVP. Lincecum has had an amazing season.

I discussed this with Marcello the other day at the San Jose game:
Lincecum not winning the Cy Young will likely keep his arbitration price lower for the next few years.
I know that’s a cynical way to look at it, and I am not rooting against him, but it is something to keep in mind as a silver lining.

I guess...
It would be nice to see some reward for him pitching for such a “normally” weak offense.

Yup. It hurts, but since we know it’s going to happen anyways we might as well find the good spin on it.

Tim Lincecum never got to pitch against the Giants.

Bad: I missed the 5-run inning
Worse: I missed it to help drain my 2-year old’s abscesses. Shudder.
