minor lines, 8/19/08
AAA: Fresno lost to Las Vegas 7-6
Fresno: 1B John Bowker: 1 for 5, HR, SO
Fresno: 3B Scott McClain: 2 for 5, HR, 2B
Las Vegas: CF Xavier Paul: 4 for 5, 2B
Fresno: RHP Ryan Sadowksi: 4.2 IP, 8 H, 6 R, 6 ER, 4 BB, 1 K--1 HB, 3 WP
Fresno: RHP Scott Munter: 2.1 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 3 K
Bowker and McClain both went deep for their 2nd and 26th HRs for the Grizzlies this year. The Dodgers' 23-year-old Paul is now hitting .310/.366/.459 in 407 AB in his first season in the PCL.
Sadowski allowed four runs in the 1st inning and a couple runs thereafter, raising his ERA to 5.40. Munter's strikeout rate is up this year (K/IP above 0.50), but he also allowed 3 XBHs in this appearance. He now has a 2.45 ERA in 26 appearances since joining the Grizzlies.
AA: Connecticut defeated Akron 8-0
Connecticut: 2B Olmo Rosario: 2 for 5, HR, E
Connecticut: C Eliezer Alfonzo: 2 for 3, 2B, HBP, PB
Connecticut: DH Adam Witter: 2 for 3, 2 2B, BB, SO
Connecticut: RHP Garrett Broshuis: 6.0 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 7 K
Connecticut: RHP Adam Cowart: 1.0 IP, 1 H, 1 K
Connecticut: RHP Kelvin Pichardo: 1.0 IP, 1 BB, 2 K
Alfonzo and Witter both reached base three times for the Defenders. Both have OBPs of approximately .345. Rosario had his 9th HR.
Broshuis had one of his more effective starts, lowering his ERA to 3.68 through 26 starts. He now has a 13-8 W-L record, giving him ten more wins than a year ago when he had a 3-17 W-L record despite a similar 3.88 ERA in 26 starts. Cowart had another effective relief appearance, as did Pichardo.
A+: San Jose defeated Visalia 6-2
San Jose: 2B Brady Boyer: 2 for 4, HR, BB, SO, SB
San Jose: 3B Matt Downs: 3 for 5, 2 2B, SO, 2 CS
San Jose: DH-1B Brett Pill: 3 for 5, 2B, SO
San Jose: SS Sharlon Schoop: 3 for 4, HR, SO, E
San Jose: CF Darren Ford: 3 for 3, HBP, SB, CS, E
San Jose: RHP Daryl Maday: 6.0 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 5 K
Four different Giants had three hits each. Among them the only one without an XBH was Ford, but he was the only to reach base four times. After being caught stealing for the first time as a Giant, he has an 11/1 SB/CS line. Downs now has 30 doubles for San Jose, which is two ahead of Pill, who led the organization in doubles a year ago. But Downs also has 13 CS (against 21 SB). Boyer, who had just 1 HR a year ago, has 4 HRs in his last ten games.
Maday has now had 1 ER in 6.0 IP in both his Cal League starts.
A-: Augusta defeated Kannapolis 10-4
Augusta: DH Thomas Neal: 2 for 5, HR, 2 SO
Augusta: LF Garrett Baker: 4 for 5, 2B, SO
Augusta: RHP T.J. Brewer: 6.0 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 2 K--1 HB, 1 WP
Neal connected for his 1st HR in August and his 13th HR of the season. Baker seems to be concluding the year with his best month of the season, now hitting .333/.387/.579 in 57 AB in August.
Brewer had yet another start with 1 ER or less. Since the start of June, he has 42 H, 15 BB and 42 K in 57.1 IP with a 1.56 ERA.
ssA: Salem-Keizer lost to Spokane 16-3
(They lost four of five games in this series to the NWL's top team, dropping their division lead over Eugene to a single game, and six of their remaining fifteen games are against the Emeralds.)
Salem-Keizer: 1B Mike Loberg: 2 for 4, 2B, E
Salem-Keizer: 2B Jose Flores: 2 for 4, 2 SO
Salem-Keizer: RHP Wilbur Bucardo: 5.0 IP, 3 H, 6 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, 5 K--1 HB, 2 E
With four of the Volcanoes' seven hits, Loberg and Flores were their only two Volcanoes to reach base twice, raising their respective AVGs to .320 and .281.
Bucardo allowed just one run through four innings but then five runs in the 5th inning, mostly because of three errors in the frame. Two of the errors were his own, making errant throws on sacrifice bunts. He faced eight batters in the inning, including a walk, a single, three infield throwing errors and three ground outs. After a 7/2 GO/FO line, he has a 2.18 GO/AO ratio this year. A year ago he had 2.92 GO/AO ratio.
R: Giants defeated Mariners 5-3
Scottsdale: CF Wendell Fairley: 2 for 4
Scottsdale: SS Brandon Crawford: 1 for 4, 3B, 2 SO, GiDP
Scottsdale: 1B C.J. Ziegler: 2 for 4, HR, 2B, SO, SB
Scottsdale: RHP Jorge Bucardo: 6.0 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 8 K
Scottsdale: RHP Chris Wilson: 1.1 IP, 2 K
Ziegler led the rookie Giants' offense with his 5th HR and 13th double. One of two other Giants with multiple hits, Fairley extended his hitting streak to seven games. Crawford, the Giants' 4th round selection this year, tripled in his first start and second game as a pro.
Bucardo had his second straight dominant start, matching his season highs in both IP and K. In his last three starts, he has 9 H, 3 BB, 0 ER in 16.0 IP. Wilson struck out two of the four batters he faced and stranded both inherited runners. In fifteen appearances, he has managed a 5-1 W-L record.
DSL: Giants defeated Cubs #2 11-4
Dominican: C Hector Sanchez: 3 for 5, 3B, 2B, 2 E
Dominican: RHP Edward Concepcion: 6.0 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 10 K--1 WP
Sanchez (18.9 y.o.) remains red hot with the bat, going 21 for 43 with 7 XBH over his last ten games. Concepcion (19.10 y.o.) had 10 K, which I believe may be the most strikeouts for any Gigantes starter this season. In his previous nine strikeouts, he had had more than 5 K only once. He raised his K/BB ratio above 3.00.

Broshuis
he isn’t on the 40-man roster, but any chance he gets a September callup? If Sanchez is out for the rest of the season and they team shuts Lincecum down, they’ll need a few fresh starters, I’d imagine. They could use Misch, Hennesey and Palmer, but it seems that someone else might deserve a shot.

I would be quite surprised. How many starters do you need after Misch, Hennessey and Palmer?

I’m hoping he’s in SJ next year so I can watch him play.

Neal!
My boy hits grand slams!
He’s hitting .282/.370/.449 so far this year, which is pretty decent, though he has been 20 years old for most of the season. He just turned 21 three days ago. He didn’t play from 8/8 to 8/16, so I wonder if he was hurt or something as I wasn’t able to find anything. Anyway, after slumping in May and June, it seems that he’s turned it around with a solid July and a so far sizzling August (though only 1 homer in limited action.)

Neal and Angel are having a slam dance.
"While conservatives tell you 'leave things alone and no one will lose,' and liberals tell you 'interfere a lot and no one will lose,' baseball says 'someone will lose.' Not only says it - but insists upon it! ... Democracy is lovely, but baseball's more mature." BVCE supports SF Dugout and Manny Burriss.

WITTER
Anyone have a scouting report on Witter?
He looks on paper like he could be something. I’ve heard that the D isn’t that great, but with 2 other catchers in the system that have potential to play other positions, perhaps he has 25th man potential, as a PH, 3rd catcher and occasional 1B.
Maybe he’s a piece that has some value as a 3rd cog in a trade to get that infield help the Giants need. The fact he’s a lefty hitting catcher must provide some value, right?
