minor lines, 8/1/08
AAA: Fresno lost to Memphis 5-4
(allowing two runs in top of 9th inning)
Fresno: CF Clay Timpner: 2 for 4, HBP
Fresno: 1B Travis Ishikawa: 3 for 4, HR, 2 2B, BB, SO
Fresno: P Pat Misch: 2 for 2
Memphis: RF Brian Barton: 1 for 5, HR, 2 SO
Memphis: CF Jon Jay: 2 for 4, 3B, BB
Fresno: LHP Pat Misch: 6.0 IP, 7 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 1 BB, 5 K--1 HR
Ishikawa had a huge game with a HR, 3 XBH and a BB. He improved his PCL line to .276/.338/.642 in 134 AB. Overall for the season, he has a .285/.366/.527 line in 368 AB, after a year ago hitting just .268/.319/.431 in 371 AB at two different levels. Timpner also reached base three times, raising his OBP back to an even .300. Misch was one of two other Grizzlies with multiple hits, but he had just two plate appearances. The Cardinals' Barton homered for the second consecutive night, while teammate Jay reached base three times and also threw out a runner at the plate.
Misch had his eighth start since being demoted back to the minors (when Correia came off the DL). The 5 K the highest total since the first of those eight starts. With 3+ ER allowed in all but one of his last eight starts, he has an ERA over 6.00 in that time span.
AA: Connecticut lost to New Hampshire 5-1
Connecticut: SS Kyle Haines: 1 for 3, 2B, BB, SO, E
Connecticut: DH Eddy Martinez-Esteve: 1 for 3, BB
Connecticut: LHP Ben Snyder: 5.0 IP, 8 H< 5 R, 5 ER, 3 BB, 4 K--2 HR
Haines and EME each reached base twice for the Defenders, improving their team-leading OBPs to .386 and .393, respectively. No one else on their current roster has an OBP above .350.
Snyder continues to scuffle since his promotion to the upper minors, with his ERA rising a little higher to 8.44 after seven starts. After just one ground ball out last night, he has a 0.57 GO/AO ratio in those seven starts after a 1.17 AO/GO ratio with San Jose begin this season and a 1.02 AO/GO ratio last year with Augusta. Is her leaving his pitches up in the zone too often? He has allowed 6 HR as a Defender after allowing just 2 HRs with San Jose.
A+: San Jose lost to Modesto 4-3
(allowing the go-ahead run in the top of the 9th inning)
San Jose: CF Darren Ford: 2 for 3, BB, SO
San Jose: C Jackson Williams: 1 for 3, HR, SO
San Jose: SS Sharlon Schoop: 3 for 4
San Jose: RHP Kevin Pucetas: 5.0 IP, 7 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 1 BB, 7 K--2 WP
San Jose: RHP Dan Griffin: 3.0 IP, 1 H, 4 K
San Jose: RHP Waldis Joaquin: 0.1 IP, 2 H
Modesto: RHP Jhoulys Chacin: 5.0 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 5 K--1 HR
Ford and Schoop each reached base three times, helping to raise their respective AVGs to .229 and .244. Williams connected for his 4th HR of the year.
Pucetas had 7 K, the second highest total in his last ten starts, but he also allowed more than 2 ER in a start for the first time since late May, raising his ERA to 2.71. Striking out four of the ten batters he faced, Griffin had his first multi-strikeout line in over a month. Making his second appearance with San Jose, Joaquin allowed singles to the first two batters he faced, allowing one of two inherited runners to score. The Rockies' Chacin, who began the season with a 1.86 ERA in sixteen SAL starts, has now allowed 1 ER or less in five of seven Cal League starts. With Modesto, the 20-year-old has peripheral stats of 37 H, 8 BB and 41 K in 41.1 IP
A-: Augusta at Columbus was suspended by rain
(with Augusta railing Columbus 6-5 in the 3rd inning)
Augusta: 2B Nick Noonan: 1 for 1, HR
Augusta: LF Garrett Baker: 1 for 2, HR, SO
Augusta: LHP Craig Clark:2.1 IP, 5 H, 6 R, 6 ER, 1 BB, 2 K --1 HR, 2 HB, 1 PO
In the 2nd inning, Noonan and Baker had connected for their 5th and 8th HRs.
Clark had not allowed more than 4 ER in any of his previous ten starts but already allowed 6 ER while recording just seven outs before the game was suspended.
ssA: Salem-Keizer at Vancouver was postponed by rain
(A makeup doubleheader is scheduled for today.)
R: Giants defeated A's 19-5
Scottsdale: RF Ryan Mantle: 3 for 5, 2B, SO
Scottsdale: SS Shane Lindsley: 3 for 5, 2B, SF, SO, 2 E
Scottsdale: RHP Jorge Bucardo: 3.0 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, 1 K--1 HB
Mantle and Lindsley each had three of the rookie Giants' sixteen hits, raising their respective AVGs to .306 and .348.
Is the 18-year-old Bucardo overmatched in the AZL? He has allowed a lot of baserunners, with a WHIP above 1.50 and a .303 BAA, and has made it through the fifth inning just twice in his seven starts.
DSL: Giants defeated Blue Jays #2 7-4
Dominican: LF Sundrendy Windster: 2 for 4, HR
Dominican: RHP Edward Concepcion: 6.0 IP, 9 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 2 K--1 HR
Windster: (19.5 y.o.) connected for his league-leading 8th HR among 167 AB. Only three other players on the team have more than one home run this year, and those three players have combined for 8 HRs. Concepcion (19.10 y.o.) had one of his less effective starts, but he improved his W-L record to 6-1 and maintained an ERA below 3.75. Among the Gigantes' five regular starters, that ERA ranks in the middle (i.e., 3rd); the overall team ERA is 4.17.

Travis Ishikawa—September call up? He’s not hitting for much average at Fresno, but he’s showing good power. Here are his Baseball Prospectus translations:
Fresno
.244/.301/.550
Connecticut
.269/.348/.430
He’s probably not a big-league first baseman, but he’s getting interesting again.

I have stayed off the Travis Ish needs to promoted band wagon for much the same reasons I was late to band wagon to promote him to Fresno. ( I realy enjoyed the come from the dead story and figured I was not be rational with him.)
But the Giants don’t have a lot of interesting position players in the upper minors and they should give Travis Ish a long hard look some point in the next 2 months so they can decide if they should put him keep him through the off season. I believe he would probably get rule 5 draft this off season if just left alone.

Interesting indeed...
It has been nice to see his power numbers increase in Fresno, which is probably a combination of getting away from Connecticut and hitting in the PCL. I have been pleasantly surprised to see that his SO numbers have not increased dramatically (which I feared).
I still hold out some measure of hope that the Giants could get lucky and Ishikawa could develop into something useful (even J.T. Snow 2000 numbers would be nice). I suppose he is still young enough (24 until late Sept) that he could end up being a late bloomer.
I would like to see how his August plays out before I really put some stock in the guy, though. In AA he seemed to go through cold streaks and hot streaks. Right now he seems to be coming out of a cold streak. We’ll just have to see how things go. For now, I don’t mind if he has a .280-.290 avg in AAA as long as he continues to hit for power and gets his walk rate up (which has slipped).

I think he is almost certain to get a callup
Given that The Ish is already on the 40 man roster there is no reason not to promote him.

so all these kids in the DSL
are they in our system? are they people we drafted or just signed out of their respective countries?

They’re in the system. Probably just really low-profile international signings. Like the Bucardo brothers.

Other players of note in our system who are DSL grads would include Pablo Sandoval (‘03), Henry Sosa (‘04/’05), Waldis Joaquin (‘04), Sharlon Shoop (‘04), and about half the AZL Scottsdale Giants roster, as well as Eugenio Velez (‘02 for the Blue Jays team) and Merkin Valdez (‘00/’01 for the Braves team) and the “where is he now” Kelyn Acosta (‘04).
As the Baron says, they’re low-profile signings, however, the success ratio of the high-profile international signings has in fact been low enough that a good argument can be made that you can get much more bang from your buck by setting up a very good camp and just collecting a lot of these guys and hoping there’s a Vlad Guerrero or David Ortiz in the group somewhere.

From what I understand that’s what they do is just scout guys like crazy in the region and scoop up whatever they can find to play in the league. The Bucardos are from Nicaragua for example, and they’re playing or played in the DSL. That’s not exactly close to the DR but the Giants liked what they saw and brought them over.

That first sentence is an exercise in failure.

Once upon a time there was also a VSL in Venezuela, but once that folded I guess they ship all the UDFA signings (who aren’t deemed ready for the AZL) to the DR to play in the DSL.

there is still a VSL but only 8 MLB clubs have a team there and the Giants are not one one them, whereas in the DSL every MLB club has a team and some even have 2.

Wow, I thought the VSL folded. I wonder if it left and came back? or I just brain cramped it?

Keep hacking Ishikawa somebody will notice eventually. How can a pitcher (Snyder) dominant A ball and then totally flop at AA? By totally flop I mean his ERA quadruple. This is the first season that I find the S-K team totally non-descript.

Does anyone have a scouting report on Kyle Haines and/or Shane Lindsley? And how can you not pull for a guy named Sundrendy Windster?

what a lineup
I got to look at rosters and all. For coolness of names alone, I would LOVE to root for those guys as they move up the Giant’s system
