Open Gameday Thread, 8/19
Florida Marlins at San Francisco Giants, Aug 19, 2008 7:15 PM PDT
As this thread goes live, I'll be in a bar with a dozen or so of my acolytes. The truest believers, if you will. They'll all stand around dumbfounded, staring at me. "It's Grant," they'll think. "It's actually him!"
They won't expect me to be so good looking, I'm sure. I'll wish that they stop staring.
I'll make a half-hearted attempt at humor in an attempt to break the awkward silence. The joke isn't funny, but everyone will start guffawing with laughter. Some of them will try to pat me on the back. One of them will try to snip a lock of my hair.
You could be there. You could be at Zeke's at 6:00 for the 46th-annual McCovey Chronicles meet-up tonight. It's probably the last one for a while.

When I was a kid, a friend of mine in Albany had neighbors who kept goats in their back yard. If there can be goats in Albany, surely there can be cows in Sacramento.

there may be, but a couple of goats does not make a goat-town.

Ironically
The nickname city of action comes from Riverbank’s past as a party town. Apparently it used to be full of prostitutes and cheap bars. So the city passed an ordinance making it illegal to dance to music past 10pm… a law that is still on the books.

That age is easy – just stick ’em in a Baby Bjorn with a little fuzzy hat, and you can take ’em anywhere for however long you want. I did lots of games when I had just one little one – mostly night ones.

3) Aaron Rowand
4) Bengie Molina
5) Travis Ishikawa
6) Ryan Rohlinger

It’s still a pathetic lineup, but at least it doesn’t have Ochoa at the top of the lineup and Winn in the middle.

I wonder if Correia has had more value to us this year or last?
He sure is a good late-inning reliever, and emotionally at least, I’d like to see us replace him with a different starting pitcher.

It seems like there are a lot of Jason Jennings-types available via free agency this winter—-perhaps we should sign one to a one year guarateed/one year option deal and have Correia be the 8th inning fireman type.

again, R is free. it won’t work on disk, though. are your data sets that large?
by wcw on Aug 19, 2008 8:07 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I’ve been meaning to learn R, but haven’t gotten around to it. The datasets I work on are pretty big (100K+ cases).
I do analysis for court cases, so I’m not sure how my bosses would feel about me using open sourced tests on their data.

by oldjacket on Aug 19, 2008 8:10 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
pfft
100k rows is nothing. RAM is cheap; you can pound the ACS into memory in R, and that’s 3m cases. but you will need a couple dozen gigs for those 3m cases.
anyhow, to my mind R is a lot more reliable than spss. I mean, a lot. yes, it’s"open source", which just means that when you run a multilevel model, the library doing it was actually written by Doug Bates — the guy who wrote the canonical text on the stuff. spss.. feh. I have a little respect for sas, if not for its licensing costs, but only a little.
for 100k cases, if you must use commercial software, I recomment stata.
