Open Gameday Thread, 8/19
Miami Marlins at San Francisco Giants, Aug 19, 2008 7:15 PM PDT
As this thread goes live, I'll be in a bar with a dozen or so of my acolytes. The truest believers, if you will. They'll all stand around dumbfounded, staring at me. "It's Grant," they'll think. "It's actually him!"
They won't expect me to be so good looking, I'm sure. I'll wish that they stop staring.
I'll make a half-hearted attempt at humor in an attempt to break the awkward silence. The joke isn't funny, but everyone will start guffawing with laughter. Some of them will try to pat me on the back. One of them will try to snip a lock of my hair.
You could be there. You could be at Zeke's at 6:00 for the 46th-annual McCovey Chronicles meet-up tonight. It's probably the last one for a while.

Greetings from Oakland
Not making the, uh, 10 mile trip.
Night games just don’t work with a 2-year old. Oh well.
Hello from Cowtown
My pet bovine couldn’t get me to the bay in the time required.

srsly,
Ever seen a cow in Sacramento?
You talk like yer livin in Oakdale.
you can't block the Bocock
When I was a kid, a friend of mine in Albany had neighbors who kept goats in their back yard. If there can be goats in Albany, surely there can be cows in Sacramento.
Wow
surprised anyone knows where Oakdale is… I’m in Riverbank. Talk about a real cow town.
Giants! Giants! HELP US GOD!
You mean Riverbank: City of Action!
I’m from Sonora. I know cow towns. Sonora wishes it were a cow town.
you can't block the Bocock
Oh hush all of you, I went to high school in Chowchilla, we lived ten miles outside of town. Can you say boonies? Yes I bet you can.
Miles city, MT
I win. That’s the “town” of my childhood….
I have no idea what the towns you’re talking about are like, but at least they’re in California and not Montana…
Ironically
The nickname city of action comes from Riverbank’s past as a party town. Apparently it used to be full of prostitutes and cheap bars. So the city passed an ordinance making it illegal to dance to music past 10pm… a law that is still on the books.
Giants! Giants! HELP US GOD!
So, you grew up in the movie Footloose? ;)

Not really....I'm livin large in Natomas yo!
Some jackass broke into my place yesterday though and took off with a few thousand dollars of electronics, so maybe they’re really stealthy hood-rat kinda cows.
P.S. How the very same idiots left this very computer is beyond me. Perhaps they’re stupid, stealthy, hood-rat kinda cows!

Nor do they work with a 6 and 3 year old. Darn this responsible parenting!

I am totally taking my 7-month-old..
..ok, maybe not to a night game. But we did go to a dodgers day game.
He was a lot better than the Giants, alas.
That age is easy – just stick ’em in a Baby Bjorn with a little fuzzy hat, and you can take ’em anywhere for however long you want. I did lots of games when I had just one little one – mostly night ones.
After they’re mobile, it’s all downhill from there. :o)

Yeah, once they start walking, they never want to stay still again. Or that’s how my son is, anyway.
My kids just want to go down the Coke slide and play in the mini-ballpark. They’re not sitting kids. Seems silly to spend over $100 on tickets for them and my husband just so I can sit by myself and watch the game.

Even with the same players, how about:
1) Dave Roberts
2) Randy Winn
3) Aaron Rowand
4) Bengie Molina
5) Travis Ishikawa
6) Ryan Rohlinger
7) Ivan Ochoa
8) Emmanuel Burriss
It’s still a pathetic lineup, but at least it doesn’t have Ochoa at the top of the lineup and Winn in the middle.
I don’t know if Ishikawa is ready for the 5 hole just yet. Although it might actually be interesting to put him up in the 3 hole.
At this point in the season, we may as well try as many wacky combinations as possible.

I wonder if Correia has had more value to us this year or last?
He sure is a good late-inning reliever, and emotionally at least, I’d like to see us replace him with a different starting pitcher.
It seems like there are a lot of Jason Jennings-types available via free agency this winter—-perhaps we should sign one to a one year guarateed/one year option deal and have Correia be the 8th inning fireman type.
me too
especially if it’s on a potentially high reward type pitcher who has had success in the past but has been injured of late.

the game will stay on, but the thread interferes with my statistical software.
you can't block the Bocock
spss is the worst thing in the world
it is a network-effect catastrophe on par with mysql.
just use R.
eh?
spss license + time lost to spss sucking >>> Sas
again, R is free. it won’t work on disk, though. are your data sets that large?
I’ve been meaning to learn R, but haven’t gotten around to it. The datasets I work on are pretty big (100K+ cases).
I do analysis for court cases, so I’m not sure how my bosses would feel about me using open sourced tests on their data.
you can't block the Bocock
pfft
100k rows is nothing. RAM is cheap; you can pound the ACS into memory in R, and that’s 3m cases. but you will need a couple dozen gigs for those 3m cases.
anyhow, to my mind R is a lot more reliable than spss. I mean, a lot. yes, it’s"open source", which just means that when you run a multilevel model, the library doing it was actually written by Doug Bates — the guy who wrote the canonical text on the stuff. spss.. feh. I have a little respect for sas, if not for its licensing costs, but only a little.
for 100k cases, if you must use commercial software, I recomment stata.
hey, Ulysses is a great book
..that I cannot bring myself to finish it would seem to be proof.
