minor lines, 8/18/08
AAA: Fresno lost to Las Vegas 8-4 (10 innings)
Fresno: 2B Travis Denker: 1 for 4, HR, BB, SO
Fresno: RF John Bowker: 1 for 3, HR, BB, 2 SO
Fresno: 1B Brett Harper: 1 for 4, HR, E
Las Vegas: CF Andruw Jones: 2 for 4, 2 HR
Fresno: RHP Victor Santos: 6.0 IP, 8 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 2 BB, 4 K--2 HR, 2 WP
Fresno: LHP Geno Espineli: 3.0 IP, 1 H, 1 BB, 2 K--1 IBB
Fresno: LHP Pat Misch: 1.0 IP, 3 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 1 BB, 1 K--1 HR, 1 HB
The Grizzlies had just four hits, but three of them were big flies. Bowker and Denker, the only two Grizzlies to reach base twice, had their 10th and 6th HRs of the season. Harper had his 16th HR. Playing in his third game of his current rehab assignment, the Dodgers' Jones went deep twice.
Santos had his most effective start in a month, despite giving up the two HRs to the possible future Hall of Famer. Espineli had his first PCL appearance in over five weeks. Misch allowed a grand slam HR in the 10th inning, pushing his ERA above 5.50. It was the first time he had allowed an earned run in his five PCL relief appearances.
AA: Connecticut had a scheduled off-day
(It was their final scheduled off-day of the season. They are currently one game above .500.)
A+: San Jose defeated Visalia 10-7
San Jose: 3B Brad Boyer: 2 for 4, 2B, 2 BB, SO, SB
San Jose: SS-1B Matt Downs: 3 for 6, HR, 2B
San Jose: CF Mike McBryde: 4 for 5
San Jose: RHP Waldis Joaquin: 3.0 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 5 K--1 HR
San Jose: RHP Taylor Wilding: 3.0 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 K
San Jose: RHP Danny Otero: 1.0 IP, 2 K
Downs had three hits, including his 16th Cal League HR and 28th double, raising his line with San Jose to .311/.366/.510. Not to be outdone were Boyer and McBryde, who both reached base four times, raising their respective OBPs to .440 and .376.
Joaquin had a short but effective start. In seven Cal League appearances (two starts), he now has 11 H, 6 BB and 15 K in 14.0 IP. Wilding provided effective long relief, being credited finally with his first win of the year in his 42nd appearance. Otero, who picked up his 13th save has not allowed an earned run in his last six appearances, lowering his ERA to 4.50 over 22 Cal League appearances.
A-: Augusta defeated Lexington 5-1
(with all the game's runs scored in the 1st inning)
Augusta: 2B Nick Noonan: 2 for 4, BB, SO, GiDP
Augusta: 1B Angel Villalona: 3 for 4, 2B
Augusta: 3B Elio Sarmiento: 1 for 2, 2 BB
Augusta: LHP Craig Clark: 6.0 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 6 K
Augusta: LHP Andy De La Garza: 2.0 IP, 1 K
Augusta: LHP Ryan Paul: 1.0 IP, 2 K
The teenagers Noonan and Villalona, as well as the 22-year-old Sarmiento, reached base three times for the GreenJackets, raising their respective AVGs to .280 and .254.
Clark had his most effective start in a month. On the season, he now has 91 H, 21 BB and 106 K in 107.2 IP with a 3.76 ERA. In 46.0 IP since the SAL all-star break, he has held opposing batters below the Mendoza line (.194 BAA). De La Garza and Paul pitched perfect relief. The 24-year-old Paul has had multiple strikeouts in each of his last seven appearances, with 27 K in 14.1 IP over that time.
ssA: Salem-Keizer lost to Spokane 4-3
(allowing three runs in top of 9th inning)
Salem-Keizer: C Johnny Monell: 2 for 4, HR, 2 PB
Salem-Keizer: RHP Mike Loree: 5.0 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 6 K
Salem-Keizer: RHP Edwin Quirarte: 1.0 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 2 K
Monell, the lone Volcano with multiple hits, provided the bulk of their offense with his three-run, two-out HR in the 4th inning. It was his second consecutive game going deep, but he also allowed his 6th and 7th passed balls in 29 games, and I believe he has been a DH in a fair number of those games.
Loree improved his ERA to 2.69. He has held opposing hitters below the Mendoza line (.197 BAA) and has issued just four walks (15.00 K/BB ratio). Blowing his third save, Quirarte walked the first two batters and then allowed three singles with a couple strikeouts mixed in.
R: Giants defeated Brewers 6-0
Scottsdale: CF Wendell Fairley: 1 for 3, 2 BB, SB
Scottsdale: 1B Carlos Quintana: 4 for 5, 3B, 2B
Scottsdale: RHP Javier Hernandez: 6.0 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 3 BB, 8 K
Maryvale: RHP Jake Odorizzi: 2.0 IP, 1 H, 1 BB, 2 K
Quintana, who has received just 54 AB this year, had his 3rd and 4th XBHs of the season as he drove in four runs. He had four of the rookie Giants' dozen hits to raise his AZL AVG to .357. Two more walks for Fairley helped him raise his OBP to .389, despite just a .325 SLG.
Six days earlier in his ninth start of the season, Hernandez had set new season best marks with 0 ER, 7 K and 6.0 IP. In his tenth start, he matched the 0 ER and 6.0 IP marks and set a new high with 8 K. He also lowered his ERA below 4.00. Odorizzi, whom the Brewers selected 32nd overall this June, has now made five of nine pro appearances against the Giants, allowing 2 ER in 10.1 IP against them.
DSL: Giants defeated Marlins 6-2
Dominican: C Hector Sanchez: 2 for 4
Dominican: RHP Miguel Ferrer: 7.0 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, 5 K
Sanchez (18.9 y.o.) had multiple hits for the seventh time in his last nine games, raising his season AVG to .342. Ferrer (18.0 y.o.) allowed more than one earned run in a start for just the third time this year, but still had a very effective start over all.

Sickels?
I do think that his low power and average numbers are disappointing, but the walks are nice. I think I rather have a toolsy player who masters plate discipline first before the other skills as opposed to the other way around.
Isn’t the problem with tools players that lack of plate discipline is their downfall? Besides, the guy started the year hurt and may not be 100% yet.

Noonan is fresh out of high school and in low A ball. If he still has a low OBP in the low minors in a couple years, start worrying.

i think he was jokin, but i agree
I was actually somewhat disappointed with sickels for that comment. I’ve never read any of his stuff before, and that kinda turned me off instantly. How can you judge a player who’s played about half a season, and spent the other half recovering from an injury? I think if anything, his walk rate is darn impressive, and I’m really excited for fairley. Hell, I was thinking about adopting him until i saw i was too late… sigh…
The one thing I would like to see out of him more, though, is stolen bases. I can understand his power not being there right now, he’s only 19, and i think a full season will show large improvements. Take his average with a grain of salt; he started the season off very poorly, and he’s been raising it ever since.

Okay, this is getting a little ridiculous
My boy Brett just keeps hitting homeruns.
Now, I understand that Bowker had his audition, and now it’s Ishikawa’s turn, but here’s the thing: why does it have to be an either/or proposition? Shouldn’t the Giants be trying to figure out a way to get all three of these guys on the big team? Ish is clearly the most natural 1B. Bowker works well in the outfield. Harper’s got 3b experience- sure, it’s from a long time ago, in the Mets organization, but 38 games is something at least. And he’s got more pop than Rohlinger.
Anyway, my boy’s not getting any younger. I hope that if the Giants don’t settle on a plan for him soon, that they put him into a trade so that he can get a chance elsewhere.

there’s probably a good reason that Harper doesn’t play 3b anymore. If he’s just a 1b, he’s not going to see much time in the majors, if any.

Nobody's gonna trade for him
If Dallas McPherson and his 40 taters are stuck in Albuquerque, there can’t be much of a market for Harper.
Rohlinger’s getting his shot now, for better or worse, and they shouldn’t cut it off after 5 games so they can check Harper out. If they haven’t found a better option by spring, Harper can compete for the job then.

Javier Hernandez
6’4" RHP, born 9/27/87. He’s been doing great lately; here’s his last five starts:
July 24th 5.0 IP 7 H 3 ER 0 BB 5 K
July 30th 4.2 IP 7 H 2 ER 0 BB 4 K
Aug. 6th 5.0 IP 6 H 2 ER 2 BB 1 K
Aug. 12th 6.0 IP 3 H 0 ER 3 BB 7 K
Aug. 18th 6.0 IP 2 H 0 ER 3 BB 8 K
All the usual caveats apply, but isn’t it great that we’ve got lots of guys like this? They wouldn’t make our Top 40 lists right now, but there’s tons of potential. I’m really looking forward to our lists two years from now, or so.

It’s just a footnote on the list of SF Giants Mystifying Middle-Infield Moves of 2008, but why is Matt Downs still in San Jose? He’s in the top ten in the Cal League in OPS, despite playing in the league’s toughest park. He’s been just as good as Rohlinger, probably better; and yet one guy is in the majors, while the other gets a 22-game shot at AAA, then gets dropped back down to A-ball again.
He’s not a super prospect, but he hits for average and power, runs well, and plays a key defensive position. He’s 24 and he needs to move up the ladder in a hurry, but the Giants seem to be doing all they can to slam his window of opportunity shut. Why do they do this kind of thing?

I think the Giants are trying to convert him to a utilityman, as he’s been playing all over the field recently. I don’t recall him ever playing 3B or SS before. Giving him more positional versatility isn’t a terrible idea, as there are a lot of players vying for second in the upper minors.

He played a few games at 3rd in SK, looked good and made some very good defensive plays. Most of his time was at 1st though.

When did he get sent down? Is it an injury thing or are the Dodgers finally just finished with him?

I know Mad Bum didn’t pitch yesterday, but I was reading up on his fifth Pitcher of the Week award this season and the blurb mentioned a staggering achievement. Mad Bum is within 2 strikeouts of taking the SAL triple crown. He is tied for the lead with 13 wins (though tied with a part-time reliever) and leads with a 1.52 ERA. The only other starting pitchers in the league with an ERA under 2.00 were Jhouly Chacin, who was promoted to advanced A, and Mad Bum’s buddy Daryl Maday.
He is two strikeouts behind league leader Cory Riordan of Asheville. Augusta has 13 more games in the regular season, with a three game set on the road against the Tourists at the end of the season. The Triple Crown battle could come down to that weekend.
