Post Game Fun Chatter!
Comment starter: Number of 2009 at-bats for Travis Ishikawa
I think he'll get a lot if he maintains his .353/.421/.647 pace, which shouldn't be a problem at all.

Three more
Lucy yells at Snoopy: “When I call, you better come crawling!”
Snoopy: (proceeds, with a smirk on his face, to swim freestyle [aka the Australian crawl], across dry land, towards Lucy. Passes her by, somewhat non-sequiter-like, doing the backstroke.)
Lucy: (fumes)
Also –
Charlie Brown: I wish I could flap my arms and fly to the moon.
Lastly (and most poignantly for we here at the McCoven) –
Charlie Brown: Why couldn’t McCovey have hit the ball three feet higher?

I have this entire thing hanging in my office. Seriously.

I’ll say 380, in a platooney-type situation. For anyone who hasn’t seen it, Lefty has a nice 2009 post today.

Found this nugget in the ESPN.com recap:
“San Francisco has scored one run or none in 24 of [Zito’s] starts.”
That’s more than 40% of his starts…
by SheboyganBratwurst on Aug 18, 2008 5:06 PM PDT reply actions
Ya so would I, but its hard for me to like Zito since he ruined my wife’s first game!
I'm young but i didn't fall off the truck yesterday!
He’d have to pitch really well to win those games

24?
He’s made 26 starts this year.
That stat is incorrect.

25 starts this year
I added today’s start to a stat sheet that already had taken it into account. Still wrong.

I think it’s 24 of his 58 starts as a Giant, but I haven’t looked it up.

and by "24" they mean "13"
by my count, it was 6 times last year, the team failed to score more than 1 run and 7 times this season.
of course, saying “one run or none” is a really awkward way of saying “one run or less”

and if they mean 2 runs or less
than it is 25 of his starts as a Giant, which is still pretty bad.

i wonder if they meant
when he was actually in the game?

ESPN wrote:
He improved to 97-5 in his career when receiving four or more runs of support, including 12-1 with the Giants. San Francisco has scored one run or none in 24 of his starts.
that seems pretty unambiguous. Of course, the way the sentence is worded, there is a strong likelihood that the author isn’t too bright.

i missed the game, and it looked like a good one :(

I think the Giants will have to bring in a veteran to show Ishikawa the ropes. Someone like Scott Hatteberg would be good. Then, Hatteberg could start against righties and Ishikawa could start against lefties! What’s that? They’re both left-handed?
Better just make Hatteberg the starter then. You can’t offend a veteran.

I'd rather bring back Richie

Yeah...
I don’t mind bringing Richie back as long as he doesn’t cost too much. I could live with 2-3 million.
I’d like to see J.T. Snow work with TI on both his offense and defense. I know some are gonna laugh at the “offense” part, but J.T. Snow was a pretty good offensive player until 33.

My wife and I went to an A’s-Giants game a few years back. I had just read Moneyball, and was talking p Hatteberg as the king of long, drawn out at bats to my wife, who enjoys baseball but doesn’t really follow it. Then, Hatteberg cam up and popped out on the first pitch. Such a let-down.
ESPN Breaking News
Bums just got Greg Maddux from the Pads. Maddux reportedly was in the same state as Brett Favre at one point in his life.
Why won’t Greg Maddux ever play for a team that I can actually root for him on?! Seriously. It’s amazing that I don’t just break down and hate the guy already.

AP write-up of the game...
begins: “Barry Zito won for just the third time since the All-Star break, leading the San Francisco Giants over the Atlanta Braves 5-0 Monday.”
Why “just”? He’s had, I believe, all of five starts since the ASB. In fact, every starter in the majors has had at most 5-6 starts since the break. Winning three may not be unbelievable, but neither is it bad. Actually, it seems not especially remarkable one way or the other. Wording like this bugs me.
If he sustained that for the entire season, he’d win about 16 games.
Trent Kline: Decentish. Also, my website is called ChatterBalks Dot Com and on it I make jokes about things.
I think...
That Ishikawa could get around 450 PAs next year. I agree with most that he needs to be involved in a platoon situation, at least to start the year. It is possible that he could eventually, with time and experience, be at least decent against lefties.
But, he needs time to get comfortable in the big leagues, and a platoon would allow that. I like his glove a lot (obvious) and I think he could be a J.T. Snow caliber offensive player (circa mid-90’s) but with more strikeouts (120 sounds right).
I definitely look forward to watching how TI does the rest of the season.
let’s not get ahead of ourselves. I think this is a great topic, but we should see how the rest of the year pans out before we all get on the bandwagon. I believe TI has great potential, but how many players have we seen called up this year, have some varying degrees of success and then slide back to sub par play? He has played a handful of games so far, so let’s be patient. I think 1b will be a very intriguing position to watch next year…just my two cents…
oh yeah, 250 PAs
Well...
I did say that I think TI “could” get 450 PAs. You are probably right that 450 PAs is too optimistic, but I am assuming that TI has a successful trial run this year. I mean, Bowker got 300 PAs this year (and more to come) and he wasn’t even all that impressive.
If TI puts up reasonable numbers this year, then I think the FO will commit to him as the starting 1B for next year. Just look at what they did in past years with Dan Ortmier, a guy who really did nothing in the minors like Ti did this year (although, TI has stunk the past 2 years).

Former Giant vs. Former Dodger:
Denker just took Jerome Williams deeeeeeeeeeeeep.
Adopted Giant Brian Wilson: One of the few reasons to watch this year.
Yes the homerun was deep but Barely missed the foul pole….. and was one of the only things the grizzlies could do off Jerome
