by delorean on Aug 18, 2008 3:05 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

There isn’t a garage, either. There’s an area for the car to park, but aside from the overhang, it’s open-air. And there’s a deck over it.

I had to really think about that, actually – I’ve only been to my parents’ current home like three times. They moved a few years ago, live 3000+ miles away, and we usually get them to visit us – the benefit of having a kid.

It’s definitely a good idea to take the impressions from a single game, especially the really bad ones, and use them to formulate an overall opinion of a player’s defense.

You make it sound like this game is an aberration. There have been more than a few games where Rowand has completely misplayed balls in the outfield. Same can be said for Fred Lewis. Yet both rank at the top or near the top in defensive efficiency?

by Hobbes2d on Aug 18, 2008 3:40 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

You only remember the times they screwed up. In general, they have made the plays in the zones they’re supposed to make plays in.

Matt Cain: He'll save children, but not the Dodger children.

by jponry on Aug 18, 2008 3:41 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Agree

You probably don’t watch other teams a ton so you don’t notice when they screw up outfield plays, plus it’s easier to remember the bad plays than all the good ones.

by fwoty oz on Aug 18, 2008 3:42 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I remember good plays too. Like that diving catch he made last week. But still, his defense is overrated. But than again I think that just says more about the lack of quality defensive OF’s in the game right now. Lots of the ex-stud OF’s are in rapid decline or have recently retired.

by Hobbes2d on Aug 18, 2008 3:43 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

The guys who gather the data used for the play by play defensive statistics watch every play by every outfielder. Obviously, small sample size caveats apply to single season data, but his defense has generally been well above average his whole career.

Zito should go the whole game even if it means he blows the lead and throws 160 pitches. If anything to partially make up for the all the shitty starts he’s already had. Like the Detroit game. Bochy should have MADE him pitch the entire game, its not like he throws hard and he’ll hurt himself. Might as well make him earn some of that money eh?
