Nate Schierholtz starts an internantional clash!
Literally...so the U.S. played China yesterday and apparently Nate's collision with China's catcher, Yang Yang at home on a sac fly was viewed as too rough and relaltiation started the following inning. The catcher even had to be restrained by teammates and the Chinese manager, Jim Lefebvre, got tossed for arguing the play. (Wasn't he a Giants coach at some point? Hitting or something? Well before that he was a Dodgers, so typical....) Matt LaPorta got dinged on the head at the top of the seventh and some people got ejected. Then Yang later homers and celebrates the whole way around the bases..all this heated debacle caused by our very own Nate Schierholtz - way to deck their catcher!

As is throwing at guys. In Japanese baseball they hardly ever throw at a guy on purpose. They have to indicate that they didn’t mean to hit a batter by touching their cap or something similar.

I have to say, I think the collision was completely unnecessary
It was 4-0 in the 6th, first of all. While I can understand there being some anger at the people who were hit before, if he was, it was a play where he didn’t have to go in high. The catcher was about a step in front of the plate, not blocking it, and the throw came in high. Schierholtz could’ve easily slid behind him and never been touched.
Whether China was hitting people intentionally or because they’re just not very good (and I’ve seen scouts say they have maybe a handful of players who could play in the minors here with the rest being about on a level with high school or college), I can’t say.

It's Baseball, not rec Softball
It is not typically a contact sport, but it has it’s moments which are as intense as any other sport out there.
Unnecessary or not, if he is blocking the base path and gets run the fuck over – that is his problem and well within the rules of the sport. (Written or unwritten).
I don’t care if it’s 4-0, or how close the play was. Maybe if it was 15-0 you might have a point, but – if it’s 15-0 then he shouldn’t be standing in the base path. If the ball is live, pay the fuck attention.
No one criticizes when a football player blocks a guy out of bounds who was behind the play. It’s part of the game – You don’t often have the opportunity to do in depth analysis of the criticality of a move in the moment. You just go with your instinct. A 4-0 game is certainly close enough that the run matters, and with an impending play at the plate and the catcher between you and home, laying the catcher out is a perfectly acceptable choice. If the catcher doesn’t think the play is going to be close, or thinks the game is already over – then he should stand to the damn side.

The reason
You do not see this more often in MLB is that catchers have the good sense not to stand in the base paths like an idiot unless they are actually trying to block the runner off the plate.
And if they are, then it’s fair game.

That's nice, but when Nate ran him over he was in front of the plate, not blocking it or the basepath.

True
Yes, it was 4-0 and China is not a baseball powerhouse, but Nasty Nate was likely “in the moment” and his years of playing hard-nosed baseball have taught him to hit the catcher if the opportunity is there. If the game is close in later innings and Team USA might score a critical run on a play at home, that catcher will think twice about blocking the plate. I think that’s the reason guys like Nate play what some would call a violent style. I personally have no problem with it.
Here's to Kemp, Loney, LaRoche, Hu, and Kershaw not panning out.

Not really
I get that you aren’t interested in talking about what I am – where the catcher was and all the room Nate had – so you want to question my experience with sports. That’s kind of typical as a way to divert from the actual point.
Nate hit the guy to send a message to the other team about the beanballs. There’s nothing wrong with being honest about that.
There’s also nothing wrong with admitting he had all the room in the world to slide to the right instead of altering his path to head to the left, into the catcher.
If you’d like to talk about that, I’m here. If you want to question my personal experiences with sports, I’m through.

I’m not commenting on anything that’s been said in the entire conversation except for the part about “Have you ever played?”
That’s a crap line to pull, even though I see that you try to explain your reasoning for saying it below. You’re still really just pulling a pretty minor distinction. There’s not much of a difference between saying “I played and you didn’t so I know better” and saying “I’m trying to see if you’re speaking from the perspective of a player or not, because if you were then you’d be more likely to understand my point.”
The two are saying the same damn thing (only competitive players really know the nuances), except the second way (the way you say it) it simply saying it in a way that sounds nicer. It’s just about the weakest place you could take your point, and is the first step in my eyes toward losing your argumentative credibility because it takes yor argument from being “point/counterpoint” to being “You’re wrong because I know more.” Which is more of a bully tactic.
So that, it’s BS.
My Dave Righetti is better than your Dave Righetti.

I understand your point
But I guess i disagree in that I do think the POV of athletes vs. couchletes can be different.
For the record – I never played “real” baseball, I gave it up to play another sport. So it wasn’t an attempt at “I’m right and you’re wrong because I played.”
It was more of a “If you’ve never experienced the adrenaline of competitive sport, you might not understand my POV” which I think is a perfectly reasonable point.
In this case, clearly Nate could have avoided the collision – so the question as to why he did not certainly calls into question his adrenaline and competitive nature – which someone who hasn’t been in that situation may struggle to identify with.

Whether or not anyone’s played ball at any particular level does not make his/her opinion any more or less valid. It’s bullyish and irrelevant.
Billy Hayes: His job is better than yours.
by delorean on Aug 19, 2008 1:23 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
see above
It doesn’t make their opinion any more or less valid, but it does potentially alter their POV.
To make an analogy, it’s easy for those of us sitting at home to question the police when they seem overly violent – but ask any officer and often they will defend the acts of their fellow officers because they know what it feels like to make decisions and react in those situations.
Sitting at home on the couch, the game of baseball looks pretty easy – and misplays or poor choices (or even just questionable ones like Nate’s) can look pretty dumb or clear from the POV of the camera.
But, down “in the trenches”, so to speak, the POV is different – and that is a valid thing to recognize.
Eugeniooooooo!!!!
by FairweatherFan on Aug 19, 2008 1:43 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I’m not completely sure I agree, still. I think most people understand what it’s like to be in the heat of the moment, and whether that comes from experience playing a sport, from getting into a street fight, from doing somethig stupid when you’re drunk, or hundreds of other situations, I think they can identify with the premise of doing something questionable when your blood is boiling.
I think a more important distinction, rather than what to me is a problematic issue of POV, is the level to which being in the heat of the moment makes doing something questionable excusable.
My Dave Righetti is better than your Dave Righetti.

I do understand yor point, flashfire, but I think we have a disagreement on the runner’s responsibility. To me, the runner does not have to slide to avoid the contact. It is the fielder’s (especially the catcher, where most of these kind of plays occur) job to stay out of the way of the runner. If it was a message because of the beanballs, so be it. The catcher put himself in harm’s way.
by tyrannoman on Aug 19, 2008 9:21 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Please look where the catcher was as Nate got there

He’s in front of the plate as the throw is getting there, not on the plate or in the baseline where you usually see someone trying to block it. Nate came in hard toward him to make the contact. There was more than enough room to go past him on the far side if he wanted to.
I think he just wanted to hit the guy.
Last of the Ninth - Photography Site / jamesvenes.com - Blog
by Flashfire on Aug 19, 2008 9:29 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Maybe he just wanted to hit the guy
Maybe not. Who knows?
What I do know is that, in the “heat of the moment” so to speak with the catcher anywhere near the plate like that, I’m going to potentially take him out. I’m not going to slide (and risk sliding into a tag) when I can plow the guy and guarantee I’m safe (and that the trailing runner may advance, etc). It is the catchers job to not make himself a target, which most ML catchers do (when the play isn’t gonna be close).
The runner has no idea where the ball is, and if it’s gonna be a close play. By sliding behind the catcher in that circumstance, the runner risks sliding into a tag. By impacting the cather, the runner reduces the risk of being tagged out.
Some players (people) are more aggressive than others, and are more likely to “take the opportunity” to do so – Especially if the level of physicality of the game has already been escalated by prior events.
There is nothing wrong with that.

I haven't seen that view before
but I still have to say the catcher is enough in the baseline to be plowed. One thing I didn’t take into effect is the experience/inexperience of the chinese catcher. I have no idea how advanced baseball is in China, and he may not have known that he was in the wrong spot.
I do think it’s funny that the mangers always have to come out and argue after a big collision, justified or not. I know that emotions were running high at the time, but WTF is a manger going to tell an umpire?

I'm not questioning your experience with sports, only your conclusion.

I can understand why someone who isn’t familiar w/ aggressive sports on a personal level may not “get” why this happened, or why it’s okay.

by dogdays on Aug 19, 2008 9:38 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
It doesn't prove it.
He was certainly close enough to the plate to be able to put down a tag, and as such was a threat to the base runner. You can see that the ball is about 3 ft from the catchers glove at this point – Had the ball gotten there .1 second earlier, there would have been a play at the plate and we wouldn’t be having this discussion. The base runner can’t make that sort of split second distinction. If the catcher doesn’t want to get plowed (because the catcher, who can see the ball, does know if it’s gonna be close) he needs to be much further off the plate than that. The only reason that catcher was standing where he was is because he thought he had a play on the runner, and as such – he is definitely fair game.
Certainly, the situation is amplified by the incidents earlier in the game – but that is part of sports.
There are written rules in sport and then there are unwritten ones. I don’t see any evidence here to suggest that Nate violated either with this maneuver, and given the previous incidents in the game (which certainly did – throwing at a guys head, etc) it was entirely appropriate.

Trailing runner. If the catcher puts himself in a bad spot you nail him. If the plate’s not being backup properly the runner advances and maybe even scores.
There’s also the fact that the runner shouldn’t be looking to see where the ball is, he should be running face-front to preserve his speed. He takes his play/no-play cue from the catcher and the on-deck hitter or preceding baserunner. The default choice is to plow in as long as the catcher is close enough to the plate to make a sweep-tag unless he gets a signal from his teammate.

I can see the point to that, at least
In this case, the runner at second didn’t go anywhere on the throw home, probably not sure if it’d be cut off or not. The pitcher did back up the plate on the play as the ball went past as Nate took the catcher out.

It doesn’t matter if the runner was passing second and on the way to third when the collision at the plate happens. That’s not the point and the runner going home wouldn’t know it anyway.
What does matter is when the opponent effs up on the fundamentals and you press the point, good things tend to happen. Example: that throw from the cuttoff man actually hits the catcher in the mitt and when Nate clears the decks the ball rolls away. Could be another run.
Watch the video. The baserunner at second passes the bag, then breaks back as the contact is about to happen, then gives a brief start toward third only stopping when he sees the ball’s been backed up. Sound baseball all around on the American side.
The only Chinese player who got it right was the guy backing up the plate. The throw from the cutoff man was a joke from only 75 feet and the catcher was dogmeat standing where we was.
Fred Lewis can stand under my umbrella.

The catcher needs to get out of the way. He shoud’ve been back up to take the throw, anyway. I caught a lot of close games, and have been run over on several occasions. It’s part of the game. If you don’t like the contact, get out of the baseline. China’s catcher was square in the baselline.
by tyrannoman on Aug 19, 2008 9:18 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Again, no - the catcher was in front of the plate by about a step.
I’m sorry, but to say he was square in the baseline is absolutely not true.

Maybe I'm used to seeing Kurt Suzuki in the spot this catcher was, making...
…a pointless sweep tag behind him as the runner is already sliding by to score.
That’s just not blocking the path.

It’s one of the judgement calls. If I was catching and standing there, I would expect contact. Like I posted above, though, this catcher may not have enough experience to know where to be in that situation.
by tyrannoman on Aug 19, 2008 9:51 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
From my interpretation of the situation
The catcher was standing there because he was about to catch the ball and thought he had a play.
That 100% = Fair Game.

China had beaned 4 Americans at that point
The NBC commentators were calling what Nate did “bush”—and maybe for the Olympics one doesn’t typically see that kind of play, or breaking up double-plays by crashing into middle infielders—but if they’re going to say what Nate did “merited retaliation” (and they DID say that), then I have no problem with Nate railroading a member of the battery.

This isnt little league or high school or something. Thats the game.
I also like how after Lefebvre was ejected for arguing, he was ejected again once LaPorta was hit. At first I thought they were ejecting their bench coach. haha.

In reading a little more about this, it sounds like Lefebve was more pissed about the earlier slide where LaPorta took out starting catcher Wei, who got hurt on the play (knee). When the Chinese starting plunking Americans, including LaPorta in the head (diagnosed with a concussion), it sound like Nate was pissed and kinda took matters into his own hands.

if this were a 0-0 game this wouldn’t have been nearly as big an issue. It’d still raise eyebrows because Nate definitely laid the man out. But then more people would be calling it “competitive intensity”…than they would “bush.”
Nate’s play actually had something to do with achieving an objective of the game.
LaPorta’s headhunter did not.
Yang’s little league imitation of Joe Carter in the 9th inning when they’re down by 9 did not.
I hope when the WBC comes back that this isn’t forgotten.

wow, that was bad ass
Nate just trucked that catcher!
In all seriousness, they were talking about how the Chinese are so new to baseball that they don’t understand many of the finer details of the game yet (for instance they told a hilarious story about how a pitcher gave up 3 homeuns to left field and they players were wondering why it was the pitcher who was removed from the game and not the LF). I’m thinking the catcher will eventually learn to get the fuck out of the way in a situation like that.

I just watched the video. That collision was not unlike Rose/Fosse. It was sort of funny to watch the two, Nate and Yang, circle each other after they both got up from the play. It was like one wanted to say something to the other, like Nate was all “yeah bitch” and Yang wanted to say something like “do that again MF” but the language barrier tripped them up.
Then I saw LaPorta get hit in the head and I had to close the video. It’s a good thing Yang didn’t get hurt, because he could have. LaPorta could be seriously hurt because of a team that can’t grasp “don’t throw at guys.” And Nate certainly didn’t do anything to help the situation. I made jokes about it upthread. Now I’m just concerned for a guy who might be out of the tournament altogether.

SMACK DOWN!
Great play by Nate. You drop the hammer on the catcher every single time if he’s dumb enough to stand there and your team has a trailing runner. If the ball gets away from the guy backing up the plate, the trailing runner can move up.
Tremendously bad fundamentals by the catcher.

I’ve never understood the collision at home plate. Why does this ever happen? If the catcher is blocking the baseline, isn’t that interference? Shouldn’t the runner automatically get the base? If the catcher isn’t blocking the baseline, why is the runner allowed to plow into him? Isn’t that the sort of thing that should get you ejected, suspended, and possibly prosecuted?
by Evan on Aug 19, 2008 10:13 AM PDT reply actions 0 recs
The catcher can only stand there if he’s expecting the ball. Meaning he’s expecting it in time to make a play on the runner before the runner touches the plate. That condition being satisfied, it can’t be called interference on the catcher. If on the other hand he’s standing there a good couple of seconds before the ball could possibly arrive… he gets the smackdown because in baseball that’s how we roll.
Even if the runner is knocked out cold by the contact and doesn’t touch the plate, if the catcher was standing there with no play on the ball, the ump should call it interference and award the base (and the run) even if the unconscious runner was “tagged out”. (I believe technically it’s a dead ball following the infraction and it’s immediate consequences.)
The runner can take any direct path to the plate he wants. If he’d run onto the infield grass to make the contact, then he’d have been called out.
In all cases the runner has the right to proceed to the next base without interference from a fielder unless the fielder is making a play on the ball. Likewise the fielder has the right to make a play on the ball without interference from a runner. When these two objectives are in conflict, the guy with the bigger stones wins.

by S.F. Giangst on Aug 19, 2008 10:41 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Well, if you want the game to be about who has the bigger stones, then everything’s peachy. If you want the game to have a clear and coherent set of rules, then the current situation sucks. If a runner interferes with a fielder making a play — and crashing into him is about as clear and dramatic a case of interference as you can get — he’s out. End of story.
If the fielder isn’t making a play then he needs to get his ass out of the baseline, but giving the runner carte blanche to level him seems like a poor solution to the problem.
by Evan on Aug 19, 2008 11:18 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I don't see the problem.
It’s perfectly clear and consistent as Giangst explained it. The runner has the right to try to get to the base; the fielder has the right to try to make a play on him. If they’re both within their rights then there’s no interference.

Do you feel the same way about breaking up double plays?
Or blocking in football?
Sometimes, in sports – two players with differing objectives will physically collide. Typically when this happens, one of them succeeds in his objective while the other is impeded. (and often laid on his ass)
Two grown men cannot occupy the same space at the same time. If the objective of the sport requires that they attempt this feat, someone is going to lose.
And that is fundamentally what sports are about – someone winning and someone losing. Different physical attributes and abilities effect your propensity to win or lose in certain situations. It just so happens that, in a collision at the plate, having big ‘stones’ is to your advantage.

Or blocking in football?
Hey, I’ve got an idea…let’s bring another sport that is irrelevant to the current sword party in here!
I heard that Randy Winn once played guard at an NCAA Division I school with Steve Nash. He doesn’t have a cannon of an arm…it’s more of a rifle of an arm really. Because of this, I think he’s got big stones and would probably be better at playing football than baseball.

But we’re not talking about football. Apart from the safety issue, I object to the collision at the plate just on aesthetic grounds. There’s nothing else in the game of baseball like it. As someone said the other day about the penalty shootout in soccer, it’s like playing one game for two hours and then deciding who wins by playing a completely different game for five minutes.

the reason it does not happen at other bases is that if a runner overruns another base, he can be tagged out. There is often contact at 2B while breaking up double plays, after the runner is forced out.

The runner has the right to try to get to the base, yes. In what other aspect of the game does trying to do something encompass inflicting maximum bodily harm on the competition? In a double play at second, the parallel would be for the runner to forget about sliding in hard and just fly at the second baseman with a forearm to the jaw.
The problem is that it’s dangerous. Ray Fosse’s career was severely diminished by a play at the plate. Yadier Molina was carried out in a neck brace earlier this year. Brian McCann is now on the Mike Matheny concussion path. And that’s just among highly compensated professionals. Sooner or later, a high-schooler is going to get a broken neck blocking the plate, and all hell’s going to break loose.

Some of us enjoy the physicality in sports
And the home plate collision is one of the few places it happens in baseball.
Just about every other sport has many more situations just like this.
Soccer, Football, Basketball, Hockey, you name it – people physically try to impede each other. Why is it so much worse in Baseball?
Why do you cheer when a pass rusher crushes the QB but cringe when a base runner takes out the catcher?
And don’t say it’s different, because in each sport – it is within the rules. There are plenty of ways a pass rusher could prevent the QB from completing a pass without dog piling him to the ground – but it’s part of the game and we accept that.
So is the home plate collision.

Maybe one of the differences in baseball compared to the other sports is...
…the catcher gets to wear equipment the baserunner doesn’t. Yes, the gear is to primarily protect him when receiving the pitches (or foul tips) but they sure don’t hurt on a collision play.

Apparently, almost all injuries at home plate involve the catcher rather than the runner. Protective equipment <<<< being the one who delivers the shot, rather than the one who receives it.
by Evan on Aug 19, 2008 2:00 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
But it’s not within the rules, that’s what I’m saying. The rules are pretty clear about who owns the baseline and what you’re permitted to do. The home-plate collision remains tacitly permitted because (a) it’s traditional, (b) the catcher has all that protective gear on, © there’s a tiny amount of wiggle room at home plate, (d) any play at the plate is high stakes, (e) who knows.
by Evan on Aug 19, 2008 1:57 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
No, it is within the rules
Colliding with a fielder holding the ball in an attempt to tag you out is expressly allowed AFAIK.
You do not see it (much) at other bases because it is either a force play (1st) or the runner cannot run through the base, necessitating a slide.
Home is, in other words, a unique situation.
If the 1st baseman stands on top of the bag to catch the ball, you are allowed to take him out. It is neither interference on the fielder or runner to do so.
Baseball tactics have evolved to reflect the rules, which is why you rarely see collisions today.

You are also allowed to run through second on your way to third. If the SS happened to be standing on the base w/ the ball in a non-force situation and you took him out, that would be allowed.

It’s exactly the same situation, isn’t it?
by Evan on Aug 19, 2008 1:53 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
No, it isn't.
You either slide into the base as the ball is arriving (stolen base) or try a takeout slide to disrupt the throw to first (double play).
In fact, if you slide too far outside the basepath you’re called for interference and the double play is automatically awarded.
Home plate is the only place collisions are allowed.

Not sure what you’re saying here. There’s nothing in the rules about home-plate plays being any different than those at other bases, so the two should theoretically be treated the same.
by Evan on Aug 19, 2008 2:01 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Maybe, but they're treated completely differently because of the situations that occur at those bases.
You’re not allowed to collide with someone at second by charging into them with the upper body. You can only slide to disrupt the double play.
Plays at the plate are usually part of a single, specific play – either scoring or making an out. Whatever the allowances are, they account for a tackle as part of the effort to score if the plate is blocked by someone with the ball.

There is no reason for the 1st baseman to try to block you off the base because it is always a force play.
You occasionally see collisions resulting from situations where the pitcher or 2nd baseman is covering 1st – in those cases it is typically the result of a race to the bag, and if there is a collision that results in the ball coming free, the runner is safe – the same as home.
The rules are fairly consistent and simple.

I’m pretty sure that on that play, Victorino went batting helmet first into Connor Jackson’s face (and ended up being awarded first). Jackson had to leave the game and Victorino remained a doucheass.
I don’t believe that Jackson was blocking the base in any significant way. Victorino is just a menace to the game. Mostly I’m just hating on Victorino right here. The guy has no right to play the game with the number of times he’s pulled cheap, dangerous plays out of his ass like it was a big joke.

I think that the collision can be fairly easily taken to a violent level. A physical collision in baseball is not designed to be a violent act, but it most certainly can be one. Again, I’m not saying that Nate’s slide was or was not. I really don’t know. But I don’t think it’s safe to blanket collisions as being specifically non-violent.

I just wish there was a button to push to just end this bitchfest thread already.
Omar...I'm done with you. Hello Darren Ford! Come to papa.

The thread’s getting old. You could recommend a new one and it’ll probably push it off the main page completely.

Ah, you might have to rec 2 or 3 newer ones. This thread’s not as old as I thought.

Instead of reading all 288 posts
(and I bet there will be plenty more), can someone paraphrase everyone’s opinion on this? lol

Some people agreed, while others disagreed.

I just watched the video, finally.
Nate’s takeout slide was totally unnecessary and uncalled for.
The beaning of LaPorta was absolutely horrifying. The guy could’ve been seriously hurt.
Just fucked up all around.

I think I heard that Nate’s going to be on the KNBR morning show tomorrow [ Thursday ] morning. I was driving in heavy traffic and didn’t quite catch the day, but I’m 80% sure they said Thursday.

Live from China?

I wish I knew of other Mega 64 fans on this board, because SHU FROM CHINA is only hilarious if you’ve seen the Mega 64 episode.

I’m a fan and didn’t catch the reference.

The Dodgeball episode has a kid introducing himself as Shu from China. I got that in my head when I asked if Nate would be live from China. Is Nate Shu from China? We may never know!

And the Tetris one was just awesome in its simplicity.

I’m not a fan of the MGS ones, but these are some of my favorites. Their latest is good as well. I can’t find Poqueblog anymore, but that was the video I used to hook my friends.

I believe that’s what they said. It was during a promo spot so hopefully it will air again, maybe during tonight’s game.
I looked on the Murph and Mac webpage, but they just have lists of past guests, not tentative future ones. I’ve never had any luck emailing KNBR so pffft to that. I guess I’ll go put the radio on.

Interesting. I’ll endure the morning show to see if they run the interview.

bah!
They did the freakin’ interview at 6am! Naturally i woke up at 6:20, just in time to miss the whole thing. I’ll keep an eye on the KNBR website, usually they post the interviews there.

he said something along the lines of...
‘it was a close game at the time, and i had to score. i’m here to win a gold medal, so did what i had to do’
from what i remember, anyway
bitte, baby.
