Burriss and heavier bat
So far today, Burriss has turned in what may well be his best left handed at bats this year. With his run scoring liner (yes, a liner off his bat!), Krukow mentioned that not only have the giants been working with him on his swing, but he is now using a 'bigger' bat. By 'bigger' I assume they mean heavier, and if indeed that is the case I am happy to see it (and I know Sharksrog is too). Both of us--along with others--have advocated his using a heavy bat as they did earlier in baseball, as it would likely improve his line drive ability, and perhaps give something of a threat of an extra base hit. I'd like to find out how heavy a bat he is now using (perhaps we shall call for Baggs; in any case, a welcome direction

Moral turpitude is highly under valued.

Is he going to be using a heavier bat hitting right handed too? He’s hitting .314 right handed so hopefully we aren’t changing anything (unless of course he could improve on that .072 ISO).

Don’t know. Using different bats depending on which side of the plate you’re on would seem odd. Anyone ever heard of hitters doing this?

I don't think it's that odd
Many switch hitters have completely different swings from each side, I don’t think different bats is much of a stretch.

I would think he’s using a different bat altogether. Lansford recently was commenting on how he wanted Manny to stop slapping at the ball when he batted LH. He thinks he’s capable of driving the ball to the gaps. I would agree, he has a solid frame, he should be able to drive the ball.

If he’s slapping the ball when he’s hitting left handed, and driving the ball when he’s hitting right handed, I think a much more efficient cure for that would be to eliminate the whole left handed side of the equation.

But typically people with Burress’ speed they want to be switch hitters, that way he can get more cheap hits from the left side.

I’ve always wondered about that. Yes, you’re closer to first base in the batter’s box, but you also tend to hit more balls to the right side of the infield, which makes you an easier out.

Did you say the Giants’ coaches are actually working with him and it’s paying off?? Hard to believe. I expect him to revert back to his groundball and popup hitting self in a couple of days. Actually, this is one of the many reasons why Manny should still be in the minors. He should be working these things out down there, not learning them on the fly against major league pitching.

Yes because veterans players don’t ever need to make adjustments and get help from coaches….
Burriss should be in the minors, but he’s not. And he hasn’t exactly played poorly to indicate that he doesn’t belong in the majors right now. Rushed or not, he has played well and continues to make adjustments, which is the most encouraging sign you could get for any young player. That they are LEARNING and trying to improve. He’ll be fine.

Lansford is the first Giants hitting coach I’ve liked since I don’t remember when.

Bobby Bonds?
But then I have fond memories of him as player so I just might not be a good juror on this.

I actually liked that Bobby served as the first base coach as well as the hitting coach. don’t know why, really, but that always appealed to me.
BTW, what ever happened to Wendell Kim? Loved that guy.

Wave ’em in Wendell! Last I heard he was managing somewhere in the minors.

Krukow talked about Manny's swing on KNBR this am
Said he’s totally changed his swing from the left side. Not sure of the particulars (i was still waking up), but he said it’s not as flat and is producing more power.
