Post Posey News Here (aka Posey Panic Thread)
We're coming down the 9pm PST wire for Buster Posey to sign. If news or rumors come out regarding his status, post them here.
Let's let's try to avoid a whole bunch of differnet FanPosts and Fanshots as news unfolds so people don't end up posting the same links over and over and over and over and over. (For the record, that wasn't post-padding...ok, I lied...it was...but I'm not the father and Mrs. Goofus' cancer was in remission at the time.)
AND PEOPLE, FOR GOD'S REMAIN CALM!!! AGHHHHHH!!!!!! IS HE SIGNED YET?????
This FanPost is reader-generated, and it does not necessarily reflect the views of McCovey Chronicles. If the author uses filler to achieve the minimum word requirement, a moderator may edit the FanPost for his or her own amusement.

But the whole system would crash due to the “one pick-up” mechanic, which we’d all be constantly abusing to ask the same questions over and over again.

Soft Bigotry of Low Expectations
Posey’s not going to sign. We are going to end negotiations $100,000 apart. He’s going to reenter the draft next year, get drafted by Logan White, and have a stellar 15-year career in Dodger blue. We’ll overcompensate next year by throwing a $10mil contract at a sore-armed college closer in the first round who never pans out.
If we go into this evening assuming that the above will happen, we won’t be disappointed!
Alvarez still isn't signed
Pirates and Boras still dancin’.
Kovacevic mentions Posey, too, in a cryptic manner:
Billy Hayes: His job is better than yours.
There is some thought that he [Boras] is waiting for other shoes to drop — he has Eric Hosmer, the No. 3 guy, and Buster Posey is the No. 5 guy — but a call I got from San Francisco about two hours ago supports the notion that Posey probably will not end up in Alvarez’s pay scale, in terms of offers.
that doesn’t jibe well with the pissing match between Boars and Posey’s agent.

As in Posey will get more or less money than Alvarez?

The way I read that is less, which I think is incorrect.
by AngelWillSaveUs on Aug 15, 2008 3:57 PM PDT up reply actions
I read it as in Posey won’t get the offers that Alvarez will get. I was worried because according to Baggs this morning, Posey’s agent, Jeff Berry, wants his client to get more than Alvarez and Boras wants Alvarez to get more than Posey, which mean things might go down to the wire. If Posey won’t get Alvarez money, then that may endanger the signing.

I am perfectly calm.
No really. I have it mastered. A person can never accomplish calm to a greater extent than I am right now. Decades from now when people discuss the nature of calm, Lars will be brought into the discussion as the epitome of said subject.
In his book: A Brief History of Lars’ Calm, Hawking theorized about the level of calm I am displaying at this very moment. It merely scratched the surface. When Stephan actually finds out about the amount of calm I have gathered right now, he will cry into his electronic voicebox: “I SEE THE INTERCEPTOR!”

You know, in football and in baseball, I’m tired of these high draft choices demanding the moon, the stars, and one or two minor planets, as signing bonuses. Ya oughta have to prove you can make it at the big league level before you make millions.
The problem with that is when they do prove they can make it in the big leagues it takes at least 3 years for them to be able to make millions.
by AngelWillSaveUs on Aug 15, 2008 3:58 PM PDT up reply actions
I didn’t say they still won’t make good livings but when the generate as much money as they do, why shouldn’t they get their fair share. Tim Lincecum’s the best pitcher in the league and he’s still 2 years away from having a salary over $1 million. I’m sure he’s generated that much in jersey sales alone.

Well, that’s only because he’s not interested in signing a long-term deal, right? Plenty of young’uns are making good money by buying out their arb years.

Billy Hayes: His job is better than yours.
Not that I need reminding that there are many, many, MANY idiotic baseball fans out there, but
A-Rod is a cancer. He was in Seattle, Texas and now New York. He has never won anything but a couple of divisional championships. With all of the Yankees money, they have never, and will never win anything with A-Rod on the team.
If Yonder Alonso listens to his advice, both on and off the field, the Reds have enough troubles, send Yonder Alonso packing elsewhere.

What if 4 or 5 of these top guys don’t sign -and go into next year’s draft. Option 1 (since G men will have 2 picks): Giants take Posey. Ha, ha, ha. Option 2 (with their supplemental pick, Giants take Posey. Ha, ha, ha.
If some of these guys go into next year’s draft, maybe the SDSU pitcher (whose name escapes me) goes #4 or 5. Damn, would they be a terrible break for the #4 picking Gmen
Believe it is customary that if your pick a player and do not sign that player that season you must then receive his permission to draft him a subsequent time.
I don’t think that is accurate. It could be, but we have players on the Giants who we’ve drafted 3 or 4 times.
Perhaps they gave permission?

SOME good news
Baggarly reports (you know the link):
The game ended less than two hours before the 9 p.m. PDT deadline to sign drat picks or lose rights to them.
The Giants still had not announced the signing of decorated Florida State catcher Buster Posey, the fifth overall choice — likely because his bonus was expected to come close to tripling the recommended slot value of roughly $2.5 million, and teams are discouraged from making such deals official until the final minutes.
But Florida State coaches said that they fully expected Posey to sign.
AMEN!
Now the gravy is the announcement of some other signings…like that of the O’Sullivan variety.
it's always noonan somewhere
Just a half hour before the deadline. MLB.com’s Jonathan Mayo is hearing conflicting reports about whether Giants top pick Buster Posey has signed a $6.75MM big league deal.

I can't believe Posey got more than Alvarez
I mean, I like Posey, but his ceiling is a good MLB C – aka, a poor man’s Brian McCann or Russel Martin. Alvarez’s ceiling is pretty much unlimited.
Jonathan Sanchez. He's left-handed, like Barry Zito. His fastball breaks 80, unlike Zito.
hmm…you are simultaneously underating Posey, and overratting Alvarez.
Probably not ‘poor man’ to those two, and will likely end up somewhere close to Mccann (with a little less power), and Martin.
Alvarez is a killer prospect, and should be very good. If he sticks at third he’ll be average on defense, and many project he’ll end up at first. He also probably won’t have huge power, but will have good power.
