Schulman: Posey deal not done
Henry Schulman says the Giants are denying they have a deal done with Buster Posey or that they're talking about $7.5 million. A Pittsburgh newspaper is also reporting that baseball officials deny all aspects of the Posey deal outlined in the Mercury News.
To further confuse matters, Baseball Prospectus says the Giants and Posey are just dotting the i's and such, and the Giants' Web site says team officials are talking privately like he's signed.
What to make of it all? I don't know. I think it's pretty unlikely that the Giants would bring him in for a physical if the deal wasn't close, as they did last week. And I don't think Baggs would report on it if he had any doubts.
I'm a worrier by nature. I think he'll sign, but I'm not certain.
If this goes down to the deadline, it's going to seriously interfere with all the drinking I have planned.

Jump... to conclusions?
He’ll sign. He’s got nothing left to prove in college. Nobody who’s drafted #5 overall goes back just to be #1. And giving him Guillermo Rodriguez’s roster spot is fine with me.
Tim Lincecum is Baseball's Chuck Norris
This doesn’t mean he’s not signed.
The MLB will often force teams to hold off on announcing over slot signings(especially ones that are this high) in order to prevent a ripple effect.
Isn't The Cat Already Out Of The Bag?
What would MLB actually be accomplishing in this case?

well, if isn’t official, it isn’t as easily used as a bargaining chip. The cat is only sort out of the bag. From the viewpoint of negotiations, this is only a believable rumor, but a rumor all the same. Posey was ‘rumored’ to be seeking 12—and it wasn’t believable, but until it is officially confirmed, it can’t truly be used to set the pay scale. It does, however, lay some pressure on a team to pay for a higher price, but the team would have to recognize that, and the player’s agent couldn’t force the point (the point could be forced by the agent if it was official, though).

wo
is the head or the ass of the cat out of the bag? And is it just looking around, or activley clawing at the arms holding the bag? Hopefully, the cat is clawing the crap out of Selig’s arms right now, and the commish is crying like a baby.
I guess you could say that Erwin Schrodinger’s cat is out of the bag. And in the bag. At the same time.

my understanding is...
You can know if the cat is in the bag, or how quickly he’s leaving the bag, but not both. but I must admit, when i come to quantum physics I am talking out of my butt

as other have mentioned
Just the normal denials. the reports of the signing are almost certainly true. If Posey and his agent didn’t like the numbers, they’d be noisy about denying the deal—and that they aren’t is the smoking gun.
You mean just as they denied Durham was traded?
I’m not worried.
haha
For a second I thought to myself “the giants used a double negative in a denial?”

Gillaspie deal denied, too
Seems like Schulman sour grapes on getting scooped
He should get used to it. Baggs is going to keep smoking him—he knows the game, the players seem to trust him, and he seems to be a good guy.

Why?
Why the big worry? If the Giants don’t sign Buster Posey, they still have the #5 overall pick next year — which likely would give them two of the top five or six.
As for Buster, if he doesn’t sign, he goes back to college taking the risk that he could become injured or have an off season.
Which party appears to have the greater risk here?
and it would cost them a ridiculous amount out of next year’s budget to sign two top six picks. Anyone read that article about Neukom taking over at the website?? All he talked about was building through the minors, and then one day later he’s going to lose his top pick?? Not likely.
Brian Sabean's new dad: Firm believer in corporal punishment
I think he'll sign
But if Posey didn’t sign, couldn’t they just allocate that money to next year’s budget (and earn interest in the meantime)?
Zooperstars, they quack me up!
Just to play Debbel's Advocate™ here.
If they signed him to a MLB contract it means they need a 40 man roster * slot for him. In the middle of a 20 game stretch were the arms are threatening to come off the staff this could be a sticky point and reason to delay announcing as long as possible.
Never mind a rational being would decide 5 catchers on the 40 man is a bit excessive.

That’s assuming the two unsigned guys in front of Posey sign. It could be as low as the 8th pick.
Trent Kline: Decentish. Also, my website is called ChatterBalks Dot Com and on it I make jokes about things.
Makes no sense
If The Orioles are signing the #4 pick Brian Matusz to a ML $3.1M deal and the Marlins signed the #6 pick Kyle Skipworth for $2.3M why then would the Giants sign the #5 pick to a ML $7.5M deal?
Because It Was Only The Dollars That Caused Those Above The Giants To Not Draft Posey
by giantsrainman on Aug 15, 2008 6:00 AM PDT up reply actions
I think because Buster’s peeps are probably using Wieters as a measuring stick rather than the pitchers or high school players drafted around him. $7.5m would be a million or so higher than what Wieters got in the same draft spot last year. Conceivably, it would be for a player who would be ML-ready within a year or so of signing.
Proud new parent of Mr. Buster Posey... you know, if he signs and stuff.

UPDATE: Just got off the phone with Bobby Evans, the Giants’ director of player personnel, who is handling the Posey negotiations. He rarely talks on the record about negotiations, but he did this time because he wanted to categorically deny that a deal was done or that $7.5 million was the number being discussed with Posey’s people.
Evans told me negotiations were “ongoing.” I pressed him and another source on whether this was all semantics. In other words, are the Giants using the fact that a potential contract is not signed to say a deal is “not done” even if the two sides have a verbal agreement? No, I was told. Very simply, as of 9:30 this evening, there is no deal. Doesn’t mean there won’t be.
Incidentally, sources tell me that University of San Diego pitcher Brian Matusz, taken one slot ahead of Posey by the Orioles, is about to sign a deal worth less than $7.5 million. What impact that has on the Posey talks, I don’t know.
On a side note
I had a dream last night that Posey hit an opposite field home run at Candlestick. I need to get out.

Baggs to everybody: CALM DA FUCK DOWN, I IZ RIGHT!
Woke up to a flood of emails this morning and just got into Atlanta.
There’s been some confusion over the status of negotiations between the Giants and Buster Posey. I’ve talked to a few people this morning and what’s happening here is a typical spitting contest between agents. Scott Boras wants his guy, No. 2 overall pick Pedro Alvarez, to get the biggest bonus in the draft. CAA and Jeff Berry want their guy, Posey, to land the biggest bonus. Even though Posey went three picks later, he nearly was taken by Tampa Bay first overall and won the Golden Spikes award. So they have a clear vision of his value as the best player in the draft.
Bobby Evans, who is handling negotiations for the Giants, called me last night to insist that a deal hasn’t been reached. He also disputed the $7.5 million figure, though he wouldn’t say if it was too high or too low. All I can say is, I trust that the tips I received were legitimate, and I would be absolutely floored if Posey didn’t become a signed player before tonight’s 9 p.m. PDT deadline.
When there’s more info, I’ll post it.
Anyone else care to join me in a fuck-you-very-much-gram to Scott Boras?
