Can anyone explain......
....just why the flaming hell is Tyler Walker still doing on the team? Not only is he still on the team, but Boulderhead insists on bringing him in to situations where the game is still in the balance. Perhaps he's trying to just get it over with and concede the game when he brings Walker in....I don't know.
If Joe Castle was DFA'd, there really is any reason why that big tub of gelatinous goo shouldn't join him in DFA land.
Talk amongst yourselves. It's therapeutic.

Does Tyler Walker cause high blood pressure? There is medication for that…

Tyler Walker is high blood pressure personified!

After the game Brooks [on KNBR] said something like “when other teams see walker starting to warm up in the bullpen, there’s a stampede for the bat racks”

I think Walker should be dumped, but to be fair, everyone not named Brian Wilson sucked in that series with the Astros. Who the hell was Bochy supposed to bring in?? If the 2008 Giants motto was “all out, all season,” the 2009 team motto should probably be, “your 2009 Giants. Bringing back the complete game.!!”

They should have brought in Romo.
Oh. Wait.

Romo pitched two hitless innings with three strikeouts for Fresno last night. Sending him down made no sense. It isn’t that he looked sensational, but why send him out after one bad outing?? They should have sent out Espinelli, not Romo. Maybe they just wanted to justify ruining his Olympics. They still sent him out yesterday anyway. Based on what I’ve seen of him, I would say that the Olympic experience would have been the highlight of his career. Why take that away from him?? That deceptive motion works well in the minors with equally inexperienced hitters, but major league veterans aren’t fooled, and then it comes down to what kind of stuff you have, and Gino doesn’t have much.

can Espinelli throw two or three innings? I don’t know, I’m asking. It seems to me that Romo was used in one inning stints, max. Perhaps the Giants felt they needed a pitcher who could throw two, maybe three innings (in case of shatter kneecaps and such).

He should be able to. He was a starter last year in CT and threw in long relief after a Sadowski start in Fresno this year. He said to me in May that he feels comfortable pitching where he is needed, starting, long relief, whatever.

that could explain the Romo/Espinelli swap, then.

He looked pretty decent last night ( local tv showed the game). Misch got like 7 outs on under 20 pitches as well. On what was supose to be a between games work day. Talk about your pleasant surprises. Copeland looked pretty decent in R.F. as well. Of coarse they hit into like 4 gidp’s. Gee how novel that was.

As much as I can't stand Walker, is there anyone else in
The Bullpen besides our closer, (who never gets a chance to pitch these days) who is effective? I can’t ever remember a time where all of our boys suck!! Perhaps Walker’s suckitis has spread to the rest of the ’pen and Tyler should be quarantined( in other words DFA), but I seriously doubt , it will solve our problems…Perhaps it is time for Righetti to go…WTF has he done to help our pitchers?

Hinshaw.
Taschner
Yabu is half effective.
and Merkin’s ghost.
But no way I DFA Walker. Walker may not be toast (and can be good; though hasn’t been of late). Plus the kids aren’t really ready for the most part, and if they get the pounding they are probably going to get, they could be toast before they were ever really taken out of the bag. Romo, and Espinelli weren’t really making the adjustments they needed to, as the league was adjusting to them. Hinshaw has. Sadler seems like he might be, despite yesterdays SNAFU. Anyway, back to walker: when he’s on, he’s very hard to hit, and that isn’t the case with Chulk: thats why one gets DFA’s quick, the other hasn’t yet, and may not be.

id rather see a young guy struggle than keep watching Tyler Walker struggle, at least with a young guy there is upside to him figuring it out and becoming part of the future, tyler walker isn’t part of the future and shouldnt be apart of anyways future
GET IT OVER WITH, DFA HIM

flip side
if there is a tough situation, I don’t want to see the Hinshaw’s of the world failing each and every time. Let Walker take the lumps for the kids until they’re ready to step up. It’s not like they’ve been pitching a whole hell of a lot better. Taschner, who has been solid all year, was spectacularly bad this series. Behind him are a bunch of guys trying to figure things out.

What I Want Explained Is Why Our Bullpen Stratagy Seems To Be
search out and find the reliever that will have the worst day. I hate the over use of lefty righty match ups. It is human nature to feel more pressure when trying to clean up your buddies mess then when trying to clean up your own mess. These guys (all of them expect for Wilson) are not handling this pressure. Stop using so many ever game. Reduce the pressure by letting them finish the innings they start and get out of their own damm messes.
by giantsrainman on Aug 14, 2008 9:37 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
well, a lot of these guys don’t seem to be able to clean up their own mess.

Thus I hate the Righty vs. Lefty madness in the Mlb now days.
Go to the pen often enough and you will find someone haveing an off day. (Yes there are arms that its more notable when they have an "on" day but that’s another topic.)

For anyone interested, pLI’s — average levarage index for a player — for our relievers.
Name pLI Brian Wilson 2.33 Tim Lincecum 2.24 Tyler Walker 1.74 Merkin Valdez 1.17 Jack Taschner 1.17 Keiichi Yabu 0.84 Vinnie Chulk 0.82 Billy Sadler 0.78 Alex Hinshaw 0.72 Sergio Romo 0.68 Brad Hennessey 0.67 Osiris Matos 0.61 Erick Threets 0.55 Geno Espineli 0.19 Pat Misch 0.04 Kevin Correia 0.03
Walker is still our second most leveraged reliever next to Wilson, who’s worked in some really high leveraged situations. I believe that Walker was around 1.80+ on the pLI last time I checked, so his usage in high leveraged situations has decreased some.
And our FIP’s from our relievers
Name FIP Brian Wilson 3.42 Alex Hinshaw 3.9 Tim Lincecum 4.07 Keiichi Yabu 4.11 Pat Misch 4.44 Jack Taschner 4.48 Brad Hennessey 4.51 Sergio Romo 4.6 Merkin Valdez 4.65 Tyler Walker 4.71 Osiris Matos 4.87 Vinnie Chulk 5.47 Billy Sadler 6.04 Erick Threets 6.77 Geno Espineli 7.45 Kevin Correia 11.32
Yeah, please stop using Walker in high leveraged situations. Hinshaw’s FIP is pretty good despite his control problems. Walker’s FIP is 4.71. The bullpen has largely struggled this year, Yabu might be our 3rd best reliever.
by xanthan on Aug 15, 2008 6:17 AM PDT reply actions 0 recs
I don’t know what an FIP is, but I don’t need stats to tell me that Walker is a shitty reliever. Anyone can see that with their own two eyes. I just can’t watch him anymore give up leads that Lincecum has worked hard to protect.
Why isn't Sabean held accountable for leading the Giants into many years of mediocrity???

Sorry buddy, but visual evidence of suck is not good with some of this crowd, you need to throw out some stats. I am sure there is some sort of stat that will prove the Tyler Walker is very unlucky.

BABIP: .284
FIP: 4.71
Walker is not shitty, but he’s not good, either.

Actually, seeing Correia’s cartoonishly bad at the bottom which tells me it probably came in very few appearances, never mind.

Yeah, just from his relief appearance for 4 innings or however long it was.

I have always been a giants fan but due to certain reasons, i have followed them closely throughout the season. I am do not know the stats that well, but as someone who has started to really pay attention to the team this year, i can honestly say i turn the tv off or walk away from my computer when Walker comes in. It’s a natural reaction – i don’t need the frustration. In the back of my head i hope that he proves me wrong, but i know better than that. Like I said, i am not a stats guy, but there have been more than a couple games this season where we have been tied or ahead and he has blown the game within the first F’n batter.

Funny you mention that. I was at at game in…I wanna say 2005 against the Rockies. Walker came in and allowed a gamed tying 3 run HR on his first pitch. Marquis Grissom (who will always be wheeling it big in the Outer Outfied to me) ended up winning the game with a HR in the ninth or tenth. Cold, wet, long game pushed into extra innings because T-Walk gave up an HR. Sigh.

Forever will he be wheelin’ it big.
