Giants sign Roger Kieschnick, Perez...Crawford?
Giants signed Roger Kieschnick today, their 4th 3rd round pick. Terms were not announced.
http://sanfrancisco.giants.mlb.com/news/press_releases/press_release.jsp?ymd=20080813&content_id=3302412&vkey=pr_sf&fext=.jsp&c_id=sf
This is good news, obviously. Now just Brandon Crawford and Gerald 'Buster' Posey remain unsigned. Oh yea, and I wouldn't mind if Juan Carlos Perez signs as well, but that one I have no info about. I really wish that I did.
Ready for Friday yet?
EDIT: Just got word that Perez (13th round) and Aaron Davidson (31st Round) have signed.
EDIT: BA's database indicates that Brandon Crawford signed for $375K. That appears to be, according to BA, about $92,000 over slot.

Awesome news about Kieschnick and JC Perez.

Excellent news indeed. I hope this means the Visa stuff with Perez has been worked out.

Baggerly suggests that is might not be totally solved.
Juan Carlos Perez, who fell in the draft because of visa issues. The Dominican native signed a 2009 contract, allowing time to sort out his green card. But I have to think they are confident about it if they signed him.

Don't "Visa Issues" Frequently End Up Being Lying About One's Name and Age?
I am sure this can be straightened up with the Feds but if he is older then he is also a much lessor prospect.
by giantsrainman on Aug 14, 2008 1:25 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Yeah, the 2009 contract seems like the only option. From what i was able to find out about his situation, it could be a bit messy; at the same time, it seems like he could have a strong argument. The Visa overstay penalties can be sharp (and would be in his case), but it appears that his paperwork might actually be in process.
There have been a number of cases that are prima facie similar to this one, and they worked out okay, as Immigration/Homeland (in)security has been rather lax with MLB players in this situation, recently.
And even if the specifics are dicier than they appear, the giants surely have a few good lawyer to help it along. Should turn out okay…
by haverecords on Aug 14, 2008 1:34 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
yeah, I think it will eventually work itself out. Keep in mind the guy is better than a 13th round talent and he fell that far because these visa issues were well known, so the Giants are taking a chance here from the beginning. Worst case scenario they lose a 13th round pick and the $50 grand or so they probably gave him.
Now might be a good time for McGowan to call President Bush and say “hey, remember that $2,000 I gave to your campaign? Well, I could use just this one small favor…” (note: I mean this purely as a joke, I’m not intending to start a political discussion)

Sweet! Now just get the other 2 signed and Carter Bell (doubt it :() And this looks great. But either way things are looking up from where they were a few years ago.

Please please please pleasepleaseplease sign Carter Bell. Though with a committment to Oregon State in his back pocket I don’t think we’re getting him.

I would say so. Oakland, Texas, Boston, Tampa Bay, Baltimore, Florida, St. Louis, Atlanta and Milwaukee making up the other 9. Possibly Minnesota could make it in there too instead one of the bottom 3. I’d put the Giants at 6th or 7th.

what is slot money for that choice? Or does anyone know what the pick before and after Kieschnick signed for?

BA has slot at $485K
The only pick near him who has signed is #87 (Kieschnick was #82), who also got $525K.

Main post edited. BA’s database shows him getting $375K, about $92K over slot. Unconfirmed from other sources so far.

Awesome
Now we just need Alvarez and Hosmer (and possibly Matusz) to get signed and it will be a perfect news week for us.

Why do we care if they sign? As long as Posey inks his deal I could care less about those 3 signing. I hope they go back to school.

Perhaps he is referring to the unsigned compensation picks that the teams would receive next year if the players don’t sign.
by rotorueter on Aug 13, 2008 8:48 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Yes, they would get to pick again, but there would also be more talent back in the draft. That would benefit us, giving that this draft is supposedly weaker.
by Hobbes2d on Aug 13, 2008 9:26 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
It is a problem if pick 3, 4 and 5 could already be spoken for. If the giants finish 3rd worse or ‘lower’ that pick would become 6 (with Matusz and or Alvarez back on the board, Hosmer wouldn’t be available). Many expect the top 5 of this draft to be strong, but less so after (still early, though…).
I still expect all three to sign, though.

Awesome. Remember all those people praising the Giants on Draft Day? Well, we’ve almost got the most important picks signed.
This is great news.

Second the poster who suggested that Aug 15th deadline be replaced by July 15th deadline. Why have the teams and agents sit around and waste a month when these transactions can be wrapped up within 6 weeks of the draft.
