Schierholtz Does Something in the Olympics (Spoiler!)

http://www.nbcolympics.com/baseball/ resultsandschedules/rsc=BBM400903/index.html
America lost to South Kora 8-7, mainly due to a terrible pitching performance from Met's farm system player, Brandon Knight. Schierholtz got a solo shot going 1-5 in the loss.
I don't know about you guys, but I hate Olympic baseball. The World Baseball Classic is such a better competition where the US can be represented right. I'm not a huge red, white, and blue typical patriot, but when it comes to baseball, I take pride in coming from it's native origin.

I love Olympic baseball...
And the WBC as well. However, I prefer Olympic baseball because it seems more pure to me. You get to see good-great players who aren’t already spoiled by huge contracts and media attention compete for something that actually matters to them. I’ll be sad to see it go.

I just love international baseball. Seeing what the rest of the world has to offer is a huge thrill.

More pure
Really? Have you seen the extra inning rules they’ve instituted for these Olympics? I used to joke that World Cup soccer was the only sport I knew where they played one game for 2 hours and then spent 5 minutes playing a different game to see who the winner was (Sorry Boozer), but this version of “baseball” is really horrible. If that’s the best they could do they should drop it from the Olympics.

Why are you apologizing to me?!?
I hate the PK shootouts as well. Especially when certain teams <cough> ITALY <cough> want a scoreless draw and put all 11 behind the ball for the entire game.

wow
That is the most idiotic thing I have ever heard in my life. Who THE FUCK are you to make a blanket statement about Italy like that? What was Italy’s record prior to the world Cup 2006 in Penalty shootouts? Why would they play for a shootout when they have a terrible record in them AND their goalie (the best in the world) has one glaring weakness that happens to be stopping penalties?
You and I have gotten into a soccer argument before, and as I recall you are a Liverpool supporter. I love how you English soccer fans all raise your damn noses at the Italian Style of Soccer even though
A) The English team has 1 World Cup Trophy to Italy’s 4 and couldn’t even qualify for the Euro Cup
B) Italy’s Serie A teams have won 11 Champions League titles, tied with England and Spain
C) Milan is the only team behind Real in terms of total wins, 2 more than Liverpool.
Please spare me the violent threat.

Listen up, jack-hole!
No, I’m not the Liverpool supporter you are thinking of, and yes, I feel fully justified in stating that both the Italian domestic AND national teams are happy to play to a draw. Their defensive tactics are utterly pathetic and nobody like the Italians can bring a game to a grinding halt.
Here’s an idea, how about you actually try carrying the ball past the half-line, rather than relying on the referees that you’ve paid for a few favorable decisions and maybe a spot kick awarded in the 90th minute! Take a look a the number of scoreless or nil-nil draws in the Italian league last year. No other league on the continent has as many, GUARANTEED.
As for me snubbing my nose at the whole Italian system…yes, your correct. I prefer the English game because it’s faster, rougher, and from top to bottom it’s more competitive than any other league out there. Sure there’s the big 4, but as a NEWCASTLE supporter, I’m more than willing to play for a spot in the mid-table.
Oh, and nice drop of the F-bomb there. I’ve never been one to bite my own tongue, but let’s try to keep this place a little more civil than that.

I’m not a fan of the PK shootout, but after 90 minutes of regulation and two extra periods… the game has to end somehow, and forcing guys to continue sprinting when they’re already disgustingly tired and playing worse soccer by the minute isn’t particularly entertaining….

I am living in Gwangju South Korea right now… they went crazy here yesterday. When I walk down the streets, people point and laugh, then they yell Korea baseball #1. Also, met jose lima out here before he got sent down… Korea Baseball is something else. Cheer leaders at every game.

Loved going to the Korea-Japan WBC game in San Diego for this reason. There was a rain delay – yes, in San Diego – and they kept cheering through the whole delay, as loud as they had during the game. Once it started back up, they kicked it up a notch. Easily the most exciting game of the series, IMO; great time.

They still talk about beating Japan twice, and the Korean flag getting planted in the pitchers mound. I am blow away by the fans out here… serioulsy, its like being at a soccer game. Even though the Kia Tigers were losinig, the people were jumping around and chanting the entire game. Everyone had thunder sticks. I’ve never seen a baseball crowd like that before… I’m still bitter about being shushed at Pac Bell (by a giants fan).

I see your point, but two points--
I sit in a section that has lots of regulars and semi-regulars, and many of us have kids. For almost 9 seasons now, it’s been a nice little community. We don’t want some jerk showing up for one game and swearing loudly around the kids. They do it as if they don’t even notice they’re swearing. When asked not to swear around the kids, they ALL have gotten really snotty about it. These are jerks; they deserve to be shushed; they deserve to have society give feedback on their behavior.
Second point: people over the age of 12 who bring a cone to amplify their voice. No. Sorry. THAT goes beyond just cheering for your team; that is creating a physical condition in other people who are not asking for it— jarring the tympanic membrane, discomfort, as well as interrupting other people’s good time.
Look, there’s a basic issue here that pervades much of society, so it’s not a surprise that it shows up in sports, too: People are so self-centered, self-indulgent, and self-involved that they no longer care (nor often even take note) if their behavior is infringing on someone else’s enjoyment. And as between the person who is doing something and the person who is doing nothing, the moral responsibility is on the person who is doing something to STOP IT (because, obviously, the person who is doing nothing cannot refrain from doing what he or she is doing, because he or she isn’t doing anything).
Of course, people should cheer their team and all that, but nobody has a right to just be a jerk and make things lousy for others around them just because they want to.

Well the obvious exception is for when the person in question is being offensive.

Obvious to you and me, perhaps, but that's the point
What is obviously offensive to you and me isn’t AT ALL obvious to the person doing it— like the people I described above. They really don’t get it.
And the guy with the cone (who is in his late 40s, I would guess, making it that much more subject to ridicule) thinks he’s actually doing a service to the team and to the fans … and even when asked to knock it off, got snotty about it and continues to bring his cone to our section. You might see him next week. He has, at least, agreed to point the cone forward to the field and not backward into the stands. But having a conversation with a friend is impossible when he’s doing his schtick. And, as you know because we’ve gone to games together, I am NOT talking about interrupting my business calls or bruising my chardonnay— I am talking about conversations ABOUT the game that enhance the enjoyment of the game.

Oh man that game was simply amazing. I ran and hid from the rain and when I came back to the seats, somehow my section had been taken over by the Korean fans. I was the lone Japan supporter among these people doing organized cheers in Korean. If I wasn’t fearing for my life I would have said, “what a trip.”
Uehara started that game for Japan, IIRC. Those three semi final and final games in San Diego were unbelievable.
