Fun w/Stat Neutralizing: Giants Pitchers
Baseballreference.com sure has some nifty tools:
Tim Lincecum:
12-3 actual, 17-7 neutralized
(compare to Brandon Webb: 17-4 actual, 18-8 neutralized)
Matt Cain:
7-9 actual, 14-11 neutralized
(Career: 29-38 Actual, 42-31 neutralized)
Jonathan Sanchez:
8-8 actual, 8-11 neutralized
Barry Zito:
6-14 actual, 7-12 neutralized
(with SF: 17-27 actual, 17-24 neutralized)
Kevin Correia:
2-6 actual, 4-7 neutralized
(Career: 13-20 actual, 20-21 neutralized
What this means: well, assuming that the pitcher was placed in an "average" environment (the way they neutralize is mentioned here)...
• Lincecum should be a lot closer in the Cy Young rankings, thanks to more wins, although somehow, his winning % has actually benefited from the Giants not being "average".
• Matt Cain is a WAY better pitcher than his W/L shows (duh), both this year and over his career. He is definitely the most shafted pitcher in baseball.
• Jonathan Sanchez has actually done better with the Giants than he would do with an "average" team, in terms of W/L.
• Barry Zito sucks, any way you slice it, since coming to the Giants.
• Kevin Correia is actually getting a little of the Matt Cain treatment, over his career with the Gigantes.

Yeah now the pitching staff won’t pee on the rug and hump your leg.

he's got a little missippi leg hound in him
once, he starts, best just to let him finish
you can't block the Bocock
I will be very sad if Matt or Tim leave SF early because of this, though of course that would be understandable. I guess the word is timmy wants to take it one year at a time, but if it ends up in a competition between a few teams for him, I think we just have to do whatever it takes to get something done. I don’t think I could handle it if one of them leaves soon, they’re the only part worth watching on this team pretty much.

As far as I know
As far as I know, Tim is very happy with the Giants. He appears to be having a ball.
And in a few years, it will likely be to Tim’s competitive advantage to be playing for the Giants—and also give him a chance to be part of what I believe might be the only all-Golden Spikes battery in history.
The 49ers just acquired Takeo Spikes. Hopefully this week the Giants will again be acquiring Golden Spikes.
That's good to know
And yeah, golden spikes battery would be pretty cool.

Take it from an Eagle fan
Takeo Spikes is no good. His team loses where ever he goes.
proud father of the newly acquired Brandon Crawford..
That’s not much of a departure for the Niners.

So bottom line, if we cut our pitchers’ balls off and added some offense, they’d have a combined record of 50-48.
Quick, give me Texiera, Beltre and a machete!

How about..
We just add some offense and forgoe the cutting of balls?

Kevin Correia
Why would you want to trade a player just as he is experiencing a resurgence? In his last four starts Kevin has 16 strikeouts and only 7 walks, compared to 35 strikeouts and 26 walks in his previous performances. I think that bodes well for Kevin, at least in the short term.
Kevin’s ERA in those four outings has been a respectable 3.86, after he was at 5.81 immediately before.
Because we know from past history that Correia suffers from suckitis? Not in the same sense of Castillo’s suckiness but pretty close

He’s pretty okay. Career FIP of 4.59—if he can stay healthy, that’s a useful fourth or fifth starter, the kind that gets eight or ten million a year when he hits free agency (cf Carlos Silva, Jeff Suppan, Adam Eaton).
OK, so a guy struggles a bit after coming back from a health issue and you’re ready to say he suffers from suckitis? You watched him start games last year and weren’t impressed? He had an ERA+ of 129 both last year and 2007 and a lifetime ERA+ of 102.

I stand corrected Goofus...
My memory is indeed a short one. Besides, if Sharksrog says one thing I have to take the other side. Chances are, I’ll be right. In this case I was indeed wrong

Right?
If you take the opposite side from me, Mordy, you WILL be right—handed! (Assuming you’re not a southpaw, but you don’t sound as if you’re in your right mind. :)
By the way, how the heck have you been? Are you and your son making it out here again this summer? I know this season must be disappointing for you, since no one takes Giants losses harder than you (and with your being on the East Coast, no one stays up later listening to them ;). So which moves would you like to see the Giants make? I was going to ask, “or would you take the patient approach,” but I’ve never known you to be patient. :)
By the way, thanks again for sending me that picture of your family. You really do have a lovely family.
I'm still not convinced that Correia..
.Will ever be a starter. I can see him being a very effective reliever in the long run, but starter I only believe he’ll be a little below average. true that will get him the 8-10 million as was quoted above which will probably be more money than he’d get as a reliever, but he’d be better as a reliever.

In the same vein.
I would like to see Corriea succeed has a bottom of our rotation starter. But one has to wonder if he has the stamina. He has never done it for a full year yet so it is a legit concern.

- Only applies to games played in the Neutral Zone. Jolan tru,
Fred Lewis can stand under my umbrella.
But won’t the Romulans take it as a sign of war if we play any games in the Neutral Zone?
Or something like that… boy it’s been a while since I watched that show….

Actually all playoff games against the Romulan Star Empire have to be played in the Neutral Zone.
