2 Out of 3 Is Awesome against The Hated Dodgers...

But how much longer can we watch this POS waiver pickup Castillo kill this team? On a team with minimal HR power, how on earth are we supposed to field a crappy hitting 3rd baseman( Oh, I'm sorry-He is a utility infielder..)  who sports an OBP less than 300?  You can't have a team slg avg of .373 with a team OBP of .315. That just doesn't work. The front office has to do a better job in either on of those 2 areas...Our pitching is sure fun to watch, but is it asking so much to expect our players to hit a ball out of the IF in a clutch situation...Castillo is my scapegoat...DFA him NOW!!!!!

When your team is one that rarely hits a ball out of the infield, 2 out of 3 is MORE than enough …even if its against the damn Dodgers…

so would I

I think we should classify our guys so we know who is what. For instance, some people will frown on this topic and say “you guys just want to bitch about something; you used to complain that Boch (not Bochy, mind you, but Boch because everyone knows that old school gamers like Bruce Bochy have a shortened version of their name) doesn’t play the young guys but then when he does you complain about the results.”

In my mind, when I’m thinking of the young guys, guys like Freddie Lewis, John Bowker, Ay-oooh-hen-ee-o, Burriss, and ochoa come to mind. Play those guys (in fact, I would have Bowker in the OF more to give Fred more days off and I would bring up Ishikawa to play more 1b). Fricking Castillo has already been cut by two teams, hasn’t he? If he wasn’t cut by Pittsburgh they certainly didn’t want him there anymore.

I Have Also Come To This Conclusion

I would rather see the Giants re-sign Bonds to play LF moving Lewis to RF and trying Winn at 3B then to continue to watch the truely brain dead hacking of Castillo and I am not at all talking about Castillo being a latino. This is a personal trate not a racial thing.

Like I said in the gameday thread, Castillo may only be 27, but all that means is that in two years, he’s got a good chance of being 29.

Other options?

1. Richie – he stinks, but…well, he’s a fan favorite. In about 90 fewer ab’s, he’s still better than Castillo, who has reverted to form and is now OPS+ing 78 (Career 76). Richie is at 93, which is still below average.

2. NO ONE!

3. Scott McClain – why not? couldn’t be worse.

4. Velez – no thanks.

5. Denker – maybe, but not his natural position. probably better than Castillo offensively, but not defensively.

Bonds stands alone.

Three please

I know it will never happen because he is ancient, but I wanna see McClain get a shot. We aren’t going to the playoffs, so we might as well see him hit one into the bleachers every once in a while.

It was frustrating to look at the box score during the 7th inning of todays game and see like 10 hits by our first four hitters, and only one by the rest of the team. Put McClain in the 5 or 6 hole and let him try and drive in Benji and Rowand for once

Denker, I think is worth some more time at 3rd/2nd. I’ve been vacationing for the past two weeks, so I don’t know how well Castillo is playing 3rd right now… but is Denker really worse defensively? yikes.

I’d rather see Leone than McClain… but I think both are strictly Fresno players and not in the Giants plans. Or so it would seem.

Castillo hits doubles.

Interesting stragegy. The defense would be downgraded slightly with only three infielders, but the hitting could improve, as there could be no double plays, that spot would just be an automatic out I guess.

Replaced with a 4th outfielder. Crazy enough to work!

by chilibean_3 on Aug 11, 2008 11:09 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I too have seen enough of Castillo. Unfortunately, there wouldn’t seem to be much in the way of 3b talent out there at the moment on the FA market (unless Glaus opts out), and no one really from within our own system banging on the door for a promotion. Maybe Frandsen could play there next year with Burriss/Ochoa at the middle infield positions. Or maybe the Giants can package Winn and some young pitching to make a trade. But I think the burden is on Sabean to start to address the gaping holes in the infield now.

The team has a rotation, a bullpen, a catcher, and an outfield that could all contend for the playoffs especially in the weak NL west. But around the diamond, we’re weak at every. single. spot. I’m not saying that needs to be fixed by next year, but Sabean does need to start. Teixeira would be a nice beginning, I’m thinking, but of course he’d cost plenty. Maybe Dunn could shift to 1b. Maybe Furcal would make sense on a reasonable 2-3 year contract. But there aren’t many simple answers out ther

A possiblity

I believe the Giants have two openings on their 40-man roster, so we might get to see Ryan Rohlinger in September. Ryan’s not much, but as someone already pointed out, there ISN’T much at third base. Aside from the recently-signed Conor Gillaspie, the position is pretty much a void—as many be shortstop.

But all is not lost. While Gillaspie’s bat would play better at second base and he his said to have the athleticism to play there, Angel Villalona may well return to the position.

I’ve probably mentioned this before, but with Angel there is so much talk about his age as an excuse for his not performing all that well at Augusta. I don’t totally disagree. Yet Madison Bumgarner is just a year and 12 days older, had a year less professional experience than AnVil, and it totally dominating that league.

I’m guessing AnVil will be promoted next season, but it’s not as if he has blown his way out of Low A ball thus far. Whereas Mad Bum looks ready for San Jose right NOW and looks as if he might be ready for AA or even higher by this time next season.

AnVil’s coming to a new country and a new culture where a different language is spoken shouldn’t be discounted. Still, despite just one year’s difference in age, it seems that Mad Bum is well ahead of AnVil.

Apparently Rafael Ramirez will make his debut over the winter. I believe that would mean the Giants wouldn’t have to put him on the 40-man until after the 2012 season.

And I think AnVil doesn’t have to be so protected until after the 2010 season.

So now the $64,000 question: Will the Giants sign Buster Posey before AnVil’s 18th birthday? My guess would be no—but that they will within the requisite two days of it.

Rohlinger

Are we sure Ryan isn’t a worthy stand-in for a while? As I recall they kept him around for quite a while in spring training. There was talk about how much they liked the kind of contact he was making at the plate and that they felt his fielding was solid if unspectacular. Sounds like a step up from Castillo.

Here's what I don't get

Why do people hate Castillo? He’s just bein’ Castillo. Castillo bein’ Castillo. A replacement-level player making replacement level money. DFAed by, what, 2 or 3 different orgs? Castillo is doing exactly what he’s supposed to do and being exactly who he’s supposed to be.

I think people SHOULD be pissed off at the front office of this club for “forgetting” to staff 3rd base for this season! If Castillo hadn’t fallen into Sabean’s lap, we’d have a big hole on the left side of the infield, and 4 guys in the outfield.

In short, Joe Castle is OK by me. He shouldn’t be playing 3rd for the Giants, or any other ML team for that matter, but he is OK. I guess. At something. Probably.

Bring up Rohlinger.

Mordy

Nice of you to bring up the Giants’ OBP and SLG, Mordy. I hadn’t done a test of the simple runs-estimating formula based on OPS, but using the Giants’ OPS and runs scored to date, it once again comes up pretty darn close.

The easy formula for runs scored in a 162-game season is 450 + (OPS – .600) 200. The Giants’ .688 OPS on the season estimates they would score 626 runs over the season, and they are on pace to score 621.

Amazing that such a simple back-of-the-envelope formula can be such a good estimating tool. For instance, it allowed one to estimate how many runs the Giants would lose when they lost Barry Bonds. If one looked at how much the impact of losing Barry was on the Giants’ team OPS, he could make a reasonable estimate of how many fewer runs the Giants were likely to score as a result of not renewing Barry’s contract.
