Taschner letting AGon beat him
= MORON
You know, for a team that talks so much about “savvy”, and “playing the game the right way”, the Giants sure are riddled with stupidity, from Brian Sabean, to Bochy, to the coaches, and to just about all of the players.
It’s like a culture of stupidity, where using an intelligent approach to the game is frowned upon.
And it definitely begins with Sabean.

Pitch count costs Timmy a W once again...
I absolutely hate this modern philosophy of managers that somehow throwing over 100 pitches is going to kill your pitcher. It’s just a number. Every pitcher is different. Lincecum has a history of throwing well over 100 pitches, and not even icing his arm. Why does Bochy have to screw him EVERY TIME? God damn this has been a hard season to watch.
There’s that philosophy again. Throwing over 100 pitches and your arms going to have fallen off within the next couple years.
Give me a break.
Games today = completely meaningless.
Games in three years = Probably meaningful.
You don’t take unnecessary risks with the centerstones of your franchise.
there has been at least one study that’s shown that pitchers that throw a high number of major league innings (not pitches, innings) are less likely to have long, effective careers. no use taking that risk.
really though
it probably has more to do with conditioning and mechanics, both of which Timmeh has in spades. I don’t think he needs to be “babied” as much as other young pitchers, because he really IS different, but I can’t fault them for taking him out either.
Lincecum throws 115+ pitches = omg bochy idiot
Lincecum throws less than 115 pitches = omg bochy idiot
Lincecum left in any situation where he gives up runs late in game = omg bochy idiot

I like how I haven’t realized we’re not past the 9th inning yet.
But it still hasn’t updated past Kouz striking out last inning.

for the Giants, that usually means a lead has been blown for Matty or Timmay, unfortunately

Eugenio Velez, who probably will return to Triple-A Fresno in the near future to play regularly. “It wouldn’t serve any purpose to have him up here as an extra guy,” Sabean said.

I now like Velez

horrible horrible game
really nothing of benefit comes from this. we were close to it being a productive loss after blowing it for timmy but fuck. i’m so sick of this team.
by positiveuphemism on Aug 1, 2008 10:07 PM PDT reply actions
not trying to be fun
this team has a legitimate shot at the #1 pick and every time they lay down they get some itch and stand up to scratch it rather than just letting the itch go away.
we will rue all these horrible wins if there turns out to be an Arod at #1 next year.
by positiveuphemism on Aug 1, 2008 10:10 PM PDT up reply actions
I like seeing the Giants win, no matter what part of the season it is and what their record is. Sorry if that makes me a bad fan.
no, i get it
but i don’t really see this as a joyous victory. i root for them to win every game, but when it comes down to it at the end of a game like this one, i’ll take the loss. if they are close to losing, just lose. if they lead from the start, great.
there is absolutely nothing to be gained from winning game this year. every win takes us further from our goal which is a good team. we don’t know what will be in the draft next year but it has been 16? years since the last once in a generation type hitter. It’s amazing that Seattle got two in a row in such a short span of time. In any case, I’d rather us be the one to get him when he shows up than the Nationals or the Padres or the M’s (again).
by positiveuphemism on Aug 1, 2008 10:22 PM PDT up reply actions
For some reason, I think young guys not trying to win might have more negative long term effects than losing a few spots on the draft order.
I'm not saying don't try to win
I’m saying it’s frustrating when they try to win, come really close to losing, but then don’t lose. see?
I really liked the Expos style the other day. One run down? Don’t try to score! Woohoo. (sarcasm)
But I gotta hand it to them, it worked.

Against the Padres.
In a game Lincecum started and pitched well in.

first of three, at best.
btw whats the origin of that im dying to know
by lincypoo i wuv u on Aug 1, 2008 10:13 PM PDT up reply actions
during Cain’s “rough” streak, there was a poster or two insisting that they only saw him as a “third starter” and I and other Cain fans were angered by that and started sarcastically saying that he was a third starter at best and then the rest of the McC just sort of ran with it.

also, to give credit where credit is due, I thought that was a very well managed game by Bochy. Taschner gave up the jack, but I agreed more or less with all the moves he made tonight.

Billy Hayes: His job is better than yours.
I always feel kind of bad for Matt when they say stuff like “Tim is the most exciting thing to happen to this team in a long time!” or “Tim is the most competitive player they’ve brought up since Will Clark!” etc etc.
Matt Cain: He'll save children, but not the Dodger children.
If Cain wants the adulation, he should stop sucking. He has no one to blame but himself.
Billy Hayes: His job is better than yours.
Inflammatory, but kind of true. Cain could do more to help himself in some critical situations.

They might be of similar quality, but I don’t think there’s a question who’s the more exciting of the two.
I know, but it just feels like by saying stuff like that, they’re implying Cain is no good (which of course, we all know is true but still. way harsh.)
Matt Cain: He'll save children, but not the Dodger children.
Meh, I don’t think taking everything personally would be good for his psyche. I think Lincecum can be praised without implying Cain is lesser pitcher.

I think
Cain – top of the rotation starter, borderline all star for a long time
Timmy – potential multiple Cy Young award winner
Both are really really good and enjoyable for fans, but one is much more exciting.
