USA TODAY: Bonds to Arizona?

http://blogs.usatoday.com/gameon/2008/07/barry-bonds-cou.html

GM Josh Byrnes didn't exactly say no. The door is open for this to happen with their injuries, and as VIc Frank can attest, Phoenicnians will jump on any bandwagon.

As badly as I want to see Barry Back in uniform, I would hate to see him in our division attempting to douse our postseason hopes.

Could it be worse? Yeah, he could be courted by the Evils, Fathers or the Fahkin' Red Sox.

What are your thoughts about this?

I’d love to see him play, even if it was for the Snakes. ESPN would shit itself and it would be awesome to see all the D-Back fans backtrack and start loving Barry once he blasted a few taters.

I , for one , do not.

My objectivity tends to wax and wane , and right now – while they’re within striking distance – I’d have a difficult time seeing whom I still consider the greatest Giant of my lifetime assisting – well , them.

A small part of me sort of wishes he’d call it a career. Who wants to watch the baseball version of Ali’s sad last years?

no backtracking needed

I live in this hellhole you refer to as Arizona, and one thing I can promise you, is that these are the most shallow, lifeless, soccer moms you’ve ever seen. I’ve already heard these people start using the old lines well he’s never tested positive, at least he’s wasn’t freebasing coke like Doc Gooden, and wow those homers sure did look pretty. This is the same anal cavity that produced the likes of Pedro Gomez, and all of his minions, and they’re the first to turn back to harbor. The truth is the D-Backs won’t deal with any off-field issue players, such as they didn’t with Mike DeFelice and Alberto Callaspo, but these ringworm fans might be able to turn the tide in the front office.

Addendum

Just because the boss says no doesn’t necessarily mean it’s a yes. It’s like when I told an ex-friend that I was really bogged down with schoolwork and had limited time to be social—not a lie, but I’m not about to take time away from important things for someone who routinely belitted me in front of our mutual friends and generally mistreated me in other ways.

So saying “oh gee I have school” is a nice way of saying “blow it out your ass.” It’s a very effective side-step to a question that has no good answer.

I think the difference between your situation and the Bonds thing is that (presumably) not every other one of this guy’s friends were saying “No, absolutely not, we would not consider spending any time with you, how about you go off and try fucking yourself, we hear nice things.”

That’s why the speculation that the D-Backs will sign Bonds would be any stronger than with any other team – because their response is not the same emphatic no that everyone else has been giving.

Two plaques that were hastily put up after the media and angry fans pointed out that his name was completely removed from everywhere in the stadium. As for extending Bonds, I was on board with letting him go, but only for a complete rebuild. When the first thing you do is dump Bonds, and the second thing you do is give 41 year old Omar a new contract, something is very wrong.

And then, after he retires he can join Matt Williams as a hitting instructor for the the D-Backs. He can hang out at his old Uni, and go all Arizona. Retire as a D-Back.

If someone signs him this year… does he play next? Once one team shows how beneficial a top ten batter can be, I bet a bunch of GMs will slap their foreheads and line up to sign him in 2009. That is, IF he plays this year.

Besides , while the batting eye/avg/SLG/OBP may/may not still be intact I think we can all agree the wheels have left him – so put him happily out to pasture in the AL. His defensive deficiency/decline wouldn’t be a liability and the divisional rival problem gets averted.

He said he visited Boston for the first time after the Globe quoted him in 2004 as saying, “Boston is too racist for me. I couldn’t play there.”

Though Bonds made clear in the interview that he had never visited the city and based his view on the opinions of others - both of which the Globe reported - his remarks caused consternation throughout the community as Boston prepared to host the 2004 Democratic National Convention.

He said he no longer harbors any malice toward Boston. Bonds’s 17-year-old son, Nikolai, spent the 2005-06 academic year at Valley View School in North Brookfield, a private boarding school that describes itself as “a therapeutic environment for boys between the ages of 11 and 16 who are having trouble coping with their family, the world around them, and themselves.” Bonds visited the school, about 60 miles west of Boston, for a parents’ day.

“I had a good time in Boston when I was there,” he said. http://www.boston.com/sports/baseball/redsox/articles/2007/06/15/bashing_bashed/

Still wasn’t the greatest thing for him to say. But to Bonds, growing up watching your dad hated for the color of his skin, knowing your godfather-one of the greatest ever in the game-couldn’t even eat at the counter of a restaurant in his own hometown because of the color of his skin, and dealing with racism all your life because of the color of your skin, would you really blame the guy for being at least a little sensitive about the issue?

Some fans I spoke to when this came out said it was bullshit for Bonds to call Boston a racist city and based their argument on the black players on the team. Which I felt was a poor argument because the fans are devoted to the team regardless of skin color. They’d fucking worship an alligator if it beat the Yankees regardless if it ate David Ortiz right after. And I don’t mean that in a bad way; it’s just not an accurate basis for an argument because the opinion is already way skewed.

I think as generality, Boston fans have the reputation of loving their players of color if they’re helping the team win, but still wouldn’t want them moving in next door or dating their daughters.

On another note, when we went to a game at Fenway two summers ago, we noticed a total of maybe 6 or 7 black fans in the crow, counting Mrs. Goofus.
