All-Stars changing leagues

A friend of mine posed the following interesting question. Let's say a player is selected as an All-Star. Before the All-Star game begins, he gets traded to a team in the other league. Does he still play in the All-Star game? Which team does he play on? What uniform does he wear? Since the winning league of the All-Star game gets home-field advantage in the World Series, this could become an important question. Furthermore, it certainly seems like a possible scenario- witness the trade of Sabathia, a former All-Star.  I thought it was an interesting question, so I thought I'd pose it to this group.

I think this happened to Carlos Beltran a few years ago. He ended up playing for the NL, IIRC?

Matt Cain: He'll save children, but not the Dodger children.

i believe he did play for the NL and since he was the token Royal All Star, they had to get a new one.. i forget if someone got hosed though and didnt get to go or if they just added an extra player

proud father of the newly acquired Brandon Crawford..

Looks like Beltran was voted by the players to the AL team, but wasn’t considered eligible to play for the AL since he was by then an Astro. The trade happened before the final rosters were announced, so Torre was able to pick KC’s Ken Harvey without bumping anyone.

I never thought about that before. He probably just represents the team he’s currently on.

I'd say he should represent the team he's currently on

but that wouldn’t make any sense because that would require you kick someone else off of the other league’s roster to make room for him. So I would think Sabathia would represent the Indians because that’s where he was named an allstar.

But having him wear his old team’s lid is really weird.

true, but it’d suck to get kicked off the allstar team because some guy got traded from the other league.

I wouldn't want to see that.

Depends on the All Star(s) in question, of course.

"While conservatives tell you 'leave things alone and no one will lose,' and liberals tell you 'interfere a lot and no one will lose,' baseball says 'someone will lose.' Not only says it - but insists upon it! ... Democracy is lovely, but baseball's more mature." BVCE supports SF Dugout and Manny Burriss.

With Sabathia's fat ass?

He’d get fined millions for exposing his breasts. Janet Jackson all over again…

this kind of sort of happened with Jeff Shaw

he didn’t change leagues but he was traded from the Reds to the Dodgers and he wore a Dodger uniform and actually made his Dodgers debut in the All-Star game. I don’t recall if it led to an issue over every team having a representative in this case.
