O.T. Warriors

Well, a lot has been happening with the Warriors. Baron has opted out, and the Warriors have responded by signing Corey Maggette and offering a deal to Ronny Turiaf. The Lakers still have a week to match the offer to Turiaf though. So what are your opinions on these deals and happenings? Will the Warriors work out an extension with Monta and Biedrins? Basically an open Warriors thread. Sorry if this has been discussed before.

Poor Baron

Too of his potential teammates signed elsewhere. At least he has his side projects to focus on.

Poor Baron?

I think it’s hilarious. He essentially ditched us for more money and a potentially better team, not necessarily security because we would’ve tried to sign him long term. And now he ends up the one good player on his team. Haaaaaahaaaaa.

An the Clippers are screwed too, which is fun because I’m pretty sure they were in on the back room deal. Weeee! (Thanks Elton.)

couldn’t really tell. Either way, suck it Baron.

lol

where did you hear we were going to sign him long term? the dubs and his agent had reached an impasse a while back. they were never going to offer more than 3. he went home to LA, where his projects are, for more years and more money. brand woulda been nice but i doubt he’s really worried about being the only good player on the team.

I’m a Magic fan.

Dwight Howard is awesome.

I still prefer college ball to the NBA by far.

if you like zone defense

and layups..layups..layups, college bball is definitely for you

I also like dudes who can shoot the ball, instead of dunking it over and over.

The jumpshot is a lost art, imo!

Also, the amount of floppery that occurs in the NBA is enough to make me turn a game off in under 10 minutes.

I love when a small under 6’ point guard runs into a giant 7’+ center and the center flies backwards and flops like he was hit by a truck.

You must love the defense that leads to so many uncontested jumpers there are in college ball, too. :)

I have set Dave Roberts free; if he comes back, it was meant to be.

Off-season not over yet, but

I think Magette and Turiaf help take the sting off the Baron departure and I’m glad the GSWs didn’t give Baron a long-term deal like the Clippers did. I’m certain Ellis and Biedrins will be back, at least for next season (hopefully more).

To me, Magette is like getting JRich back, but at a cheaper price. Neither he nor Ellis are true point guards, but can run the break which is more important to Nellieball. When the team has to go to a set offense, Jackson is probably better suited to running the offense; he’s a better passer, can run the pick-and-roll, find Ellis for an open jumper or dish it to a slashing Magette. I think we’ll see Jackson starting the set offense from the start of the key, where he’s athreat to step back and fire a 3-pointer. Teams will have to respect that.

Turiaf will probably start some games and ride the bench some games, depending on the matchups. I think we'll finally have an answer for the Carlos Boozers of the world and some who can spell Biedrins without giving up nealry 100 lbs to opposing centers.

the big question know is Harrington. There’s talk that he’ll be signed-and-traded. He’s considered attractive since his salary comes off the books after next season, meaning he’ll clear space for whoever haves him. I kinda think the Warriors should keep him for that reason, clear up more cap space of their own and go after a Lebron type impact-player next off-season.

Pietrus is gone, as is likely Barnes, but I really hope they bring back Azubukakke. Dude’s a gamer.

Good point re: Jackson

Remember when Scottie Pippen used to run the set offense for the 90’s Bulls? StackJack can do that all day. And Monta can take the ball up the floor, even if he hasn’t learned how to set up a halfcourt offense quite yet (although considering the type of scorer he is – mid range jumper and flash into the key), I like him at the point.

Also agreed on Azubuke – he’s shown much talent and if he were to refine that into a consistent shot, he would be a very valuable asset as our reserve combo guard.

A starting 5 of Ellis, Magette, Jackson, Wright and Bidrins would be a very athletic and long quintet. With Turiaf stepping in for the defensive aspect and azubuke giving ellis / magette / jackson some rest, we’re looking good!

Go Dubs!

a question stemming from ignorance

am i totally missing something because i don’t see how maxing ellis isn’t a top priority. he’s an amazing player to simply watch, he get the job done and he’s only 23. if we just do the one year contract thing we could potentially lose him next year with no compensation and i think he’s the kind of player i’d build my offense around.

i say sign ellis and andris to long contracts, lose harrington next off-season and wait for the 2010 free agent class. monta-lebron. lebron-monta.

there is less than a 1% chance we dont max monta

we can sign FA’s till we hit the cap and then sign monta to the 5 year/10 mil contract he wants

Someone tell me something about this Pietrus guy.

by xanthan on Jul 9, 2008 1:42 PM PDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

he was one of my favorite players. refs hated him for some reason though and so he always got into foul trouble, but thats mainly because wed always put him on the other teams best players. hes a defensive player first for sure, can hit the corner 3 with the best of them but is really scary when he puts the ball on the floor. gets called for traveling and stepping out of bounds (from standing in the corner then putting his back foot down first before stepping forward) but i always felt like that was correctable even though it never got corrected.

I am not an expert on NBA contracts

But is there a limit to what Monta can get? I think his market value would be well beyond Maggette’s. Does anyone still have any cap room to make a run at him? I am paranoid about losing this guy.

Thanks, Azmanz. I don’t catch much (any really) Warrior basketball, so I’ve never really seen him play. But he’s headed to my Magic. I like the defensive side, we need some more players like that.

Iffy

I was pretty iffy about the Magette signing at first. Not that he isn’t a good player, but that he is a mid-size player, and that is a commodity the Warriors almost always have in abundance. The lalready had Stephen Jackson, first round draft choice Anthony Randolph and likely Kelenna Azubuike. Al Harrington has played some three, but I suspect he will be dealt.

But I guess I have turned positive on the signing, since it does build the Warriors’ talent base, perhaps providing more fodder to trade for a much-needed point guard or two. Baron Davis opted out. (Thank you, Baron. Another year would have been fine, but thank goodness the Warriors didn’t match the five years you are getting from the Clippers. You should give them good pub, but I wonder if you won’t be an unhealthy drag on their payroll before your contract is up.) And at the same time, backup point guard C.J. Watson suffered an injury that is expected to sideline him for three or four months.

Magette was also sixth-best at getting to the line last season, and while I think the NBA officials call way to many non-advantage fouls, as long as they are going to do so, Magette and the Warriors might as well take advantage of it.

The guy I would like to see the Warriors get is Josh Smith, who is a restricted free agent with the Hawks. At just 22, Smith is an athletic 6-foot-9 and 225 pounds. I think if the Warriors could land him, they would have the middle nicely taken care of with him, Andris Beidrins, Brandon Wright and frankly a physical backup center such as Mbenga, the guy they gave up to sign Watson. Mbenga was as raw as steak tartare and as inoffensive as the shyest of wallflowers, but he could bang and appeared eager to learn.

Clearly both this upcoming season and the future hinge on the Warriors’ acquiring some sort of point guard. I would prefer they not overpay for someone in the short term, but rather save their money for the good free agent classes of 2009 and 2010.

When Tim Hardaway went down, the Warriors picked up Avery Johnson for a song. And Avery got them through a season until Hardaway could return from his serious knee injury. Hopefully without overspending, the Warriors can get a serviceable point guard to last them until they can work a trade or free agency signing to find a more permanent solution.

Ray Felton

Anyone think Felton would be a fit on the Warriors?

Not sure what Charlotte’s expectation would be in return. Would it be worth a 1st round pick next year (isn’t next year’s draft class supposed to be relatively weak?)?

If the Warriors remain under the cap, can they obtain a player without requiring salaries to (almost) match? (Didn’t Charlotte essentially do that to get J-Rich?)

Clipper fan

Wasn’t overly excited with the addition of Davis and then Brand depart, however, the glass half full says Brand/Kaman didn’t mesh well with their court spacing and Clips needed a PG.

Warriors fans can rejoice now with the signing of Maggette because you will despair later. While he is very athletic he has a zero basketball IQ.

by wilriv21 on Jul 9, 2008 6:36 PM PDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Well you can rejoice now

And despair 20 games into next season when Baron get’s injured.

Or 20 seconds into the first game of the season when he pulls up on a 3 on 2 to shoot a 3.

Contracts

The Warriors are signing available free agents BEFORE their own, because they have (had) cap space to do so. Being about $25 million under the cap after the Davis opt-out, they could afford to pursue free agents. They won’t try to re-sign Monta Ellis and Andris Biedrins until AFTER they sign other teams’ free agents, because you can exceed the salary cap in order to re-sign your own players.
Plus, since Monta and Andris are restricted free agents, any other team that makes an offer can be matched by the Warriors.

Ralph Barbieri, heal thyself.

Ugh.. I don’t like turiaf.. =X I hope we don’t get him.. sucks for davis.. think he’ll get boo’d when he plays here? :D probably huh.

If my head is full of white hairs by the end of this season.. I blame Brian Wilson. (I'm only 22, dammit!)
