OT: Harden traded to Cubs
The Cubs answered the Brewers acquisition of CC Sabathia, picking up Rich Harden and Chad Gaudin from Oakland on Tuesday for Sean Gallagher, Eric Patterson, Matt Murton and Josh Donaldson.
The right-handed Harden is 5-1 with an 2.34 earned-run average and 92 strikeouts over 13 games for Oakland, bolsters a Cubs rotation that just got saw the return of Carlos Zambrano.
That seems like very little for Rich Harden, injury risk notwithstanding. More of a quantity over quality deal, IMO.
But, wow, what an answer to the CC Sabathia trade.

Great deal for the Cubs. It’s a bit high-risk because Harden’s so volatile, but I don’t think any of the pieces they gave up are that good to begin with.

Most people seem really down on Eric Patterson: am I missing something? The guy has a quality minor league track record, and PECOTA thinks he will become Ray Durham.

He’s an okay player, I think Ray Durham is really optimistic, but he’s blocked on the Cubs so I don’t think they’ll miss him at all.

I don't see him as a Durham quality player
at least “prime” Ray Durham. His minor league track record is decent, but not supremely impressive. His strong AAA season this year was a repeat year and while I think he can be a MLB caliber starter, I don’t see him doing anything better than league average. League average is worth something though, and if he is a great defender (I just don’t know) that could boost him even more.
I see Patterson as maybe a Mark Ellis type with more speed. If his glove can match Ellis glove, that is a pretty solid addition.

I’ve read some reports from Cubs fans saying he’s a butcher at second. I mean, Ellis has a ridiculous glove, so it’s doubtful Patterson could match it anyway.

yeah, probably a weak glove
Patterson moved to the OF for a bit of this year as well, which is never a good sign for infield defense

Yup, that is the key issue
with Eric Patterson. Offensively, he’s decent. His OPS and OBP in the minors have been above league average for his entire career, except for 37 PAs in 2005 in AA.
The problem apparently is his D. If he can play average D at 2b, or CF, he should be an OK player. If not, he’s filler.

I pretty much have full faith in Beane in any trade, which is why I would implore Sabean to never, ever trade with him.

Decent haul, but for some reason I felt they could've gotten more
Nonetheless, a ton of depth here. Gallagher could be a very good 2-3 in a rotation for years to come, Murton is underrated, Patterson could be a decent replacement for Ellis next year, and Donaldson is a decent catching prospect, just has a long to go.
A nice, deep haul, I just would’ve prefered something like Gallagher, Hill, and Donaldson (but maybe the Cubs value Hill a lot more than I think)

Seems pretty solid on both ends. The Cubs won’t particularly miss those guys, but they’ll all be useful for Beane… I think that’s a pretty good haul for a guy as injury-prone as Harden. He was never going to yield a LaPorta or anything like that, so four real pieces isn’t bad.
Here’s hoping this entices the Brewers to make a further move with us.

You, and many others, are missing the A's throw-in
Chad Gaudin is a damn good pitcher, both in relief and starting (kind of a better Correia). I have to believe that he’s injured or something, for him to be tossed in like this. A’s fans all thought that were Harden to be dealt, Gaudin would be his replacement in the rotation. Gaudin has been used only sporadically and in very low-leverage situations lately, which suggests that maybe he was being trotted out there to make it look like he’s okay, when maybe he’s not.
Assuming that Harden and Gaudin aren’t both “damaged”, then I don’t see how this can possibly be a good deal for the A’s, who essentially give up contention and get a bunch of scrubs. I mean, If Gallagher is at best a 2-3 guy, then why did the A’s just give up a potential ace and a solid back-of-the-rotation guy for a package that revolves around him?

The potential ace
has never pitched more than 200 MLB innings in a single season. He’s gone above 150 IP once. Last year, the threw 25.7 innings. In 2006, 46.7 innings.
Even this season, with him being “healthy”, there have been injury concerns: the current reported “dead arm”, the strained subscapularis earlier in the season etc.

Gallagher’s only 22 and still has a lot of room to be good. He was the #5 prospect according to BA last season.
Donaldson is the same age, but he’s struggling offensively in low A ball. He converted from 3b to C and is still learning the position. He was the #7 prospect for the Cubs last year.
I always thought that Murton should get more time and he put up respectable numbers, but the Cubs just didn’t want to play him and he became superfluous with the signing of Fukudome.
Patterson will probably be better than his brother, but has yet to make an impact at the big league level. He’s put up decent minor league numbers, though, for a speed guy. He would have been more valuable if he could stick at 2b, but he couldn’t.
Frankly, I’m kinda surprised the A’s didn’t get more. I thought they might, at least, get Ceda or even Colvin, given how Beane has swindled so many GMs. Given Harden’s injury history, though, it’s not surprising that this was all that Beane & Co could get.

Beane was quick on the trigger.
My first thought was, “why make this trade with so much time before the deadline?”. I have to think Beane believes that Harden’s value is at maximum right now. Apparently there was concern by the A’s in Harden’s last start over his velocity. The A’s could not be counted out of the race, but it was probably smart considering their chances this year (Giants FO please take notice). And as always, only time will tell who made out better with this trade, but I’m thinking the A’s may benefit more in the long run.

Harden might be hurt again. He said he felt his arm was dead after his last start. Having said that I feel they should have gotten a lot more. And probably should have and could have waited closer to the deadline to make a move. So unless he really is headed towards the DL within the next week or so, I think this was a poor trade. Especially when Gaudin was basically just tossed in there too.
Not very high on Gallagher at all. He seems to be similar to Gaudin. And then Eric Patterson is crap. Not a fan of Donaldson. Murton is a platoon guy at best and joins a very crowded OF situation in Oakland. Supposedly Murton might get flipped to TB, and they were a fan of his.

Why aren't you high on Gallagher?
He’s 22 and has been very effective at every level of the minors, and has even been decent in the bigs this year.
I think he’s a pretty solid pitcher that could emerge into a good #2-3 starter

Hudson for outfielder Charles Thomas and pitchers Juan Cruz and Dan Meyer.
by Cainer on Jul 9, 2008 11:02 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
At the time, Juan Cruz and Dan Meyer were both high upside arms. Meyer blew his arm out shortly after the trade and Cruz never really harnessed his stuff. At the time the trade was made, it was fine; stop judging the results and look at the process.
Anyways, this time the A’s didn’t trade a good pitcher for nothing. They traded a great, but always hurt, pitcher for a bunch of useful players. Just because they didn’t get a blue chipper back in the deal, doesn’t mean they got nothing. It’s not flashy, but it is valuable.

Yes,
Cruz and Meyer were high upside arms, according to analysts. Maybe, the Braves coaches / scouts / FO though held the opinion that Cruz would never really harness his stuff. Maybe they knew something about Meyer’s mechanics / medical / training records.
The problem with just looking at the process is that a HUGE amount of information, training and medical records, video analysis of mechanics, is simply NOT available to analysts and bloggers, and will NEVER be available. The problem with simply focusing on the process is that you might not be inputting enough, and the correct, information, into your process.
Without information, process is worthless.

Harden AND Gaudin? That seems like a lot. I’m glad I’m not more of an A’s fan than I am, because I don’t know if I’d be very happy. Harden pretty much had to be moved at some point. Even if he played for a team that didn’t jettison every good player that comes through the ranks, he would likely have had to be traded because of his eventual risk to cost ratio.
But I would have wanted… not more… but better overall, for those TWO pitchers.

I think it’s just a fair deal all the way around, the A’s couldn’t get top value for a guy who has never been able to stay healthy. Harden is probably the most frustrating type of player for a GM to evaluate, Lights out on the mound, but never able to take the mound nearly enough to make your team better on the whole. He’s like fools gold. I thought Gallagher looked decent when he faced us a week ago, and he’s only 22 which gives him all kinds of time to get better at the ML level, profiling him as a decent #3 seems accurate. A’s fans are ridiculous, they’d tell you Goudin alone could have returned Murton + Gallagher. They overvalue their prospects way more than we do

Interesting Trade for the A's; Great for the Cubs
Interesting trade for Oakland.
Sean Gallagher is a solid pick up. He’s not a superstar in the making, but he has improved essentially every season, and should become a good rotation starter, deepening any rotation.
Donaldson is less of a sure thing. He has some legitimate power, and has good plate discipline. But this year, he’s really struggling to simply get hits. There’s some upside to him, but he’s definitely a riskier pickup.
Eric Patterson is a versatile infielder, with some outfield experience (corners, not center). However, he doesn’t stand out in any one tool, and his best tool, his speed, has not been as standout recently. He’s got an average ceiling at best, and could be limited to being a utility player in the majors.
Murton feels a bit like a dump. The highest drafted player in this group, Murton has slipped in his major league performance each of the past four seasons, and his power is slipping away. He’s got the plate discipline the A’s love, but he’s out of options and the Cubs, in a win now mode, don’t have time to wait for the soon-to-be 27-year old. Do the A’s? Maybe, but his ceiling is dropping quickly.
Gaudin’s not a huge factor. He’ll deepen the Cubs bullpen, but he’s as likely to fall off the radar as continue to do well or improve. If his control continues to be better, who knows. He’s not a starter long term.
Harden, however, is a hell of a response by the Cubs to the Sabathia pickup. He’s a possible division winner. For the Cubs, I think this is a great move.
For the A’s…it’s another move without a lot of high ceiling players. They get a lot deeper at the 40-man level, but Gallagher is the closest thing to a star in this move. It’s not a bad move for the A’s, and it’ll help building for the future, but these aren’t the players you build around, these are the players that build around the stars. They’ve picked up a lot of the latter in recent trades.

You've got to think the A's just don't believe Hardin will ever be healthy
Otherwise they are selling low, which is very much un-Beane-like. Hardin, when healthy, has been one of the top pitchers in the majors. I would have thought the A’s would have held on to him and shown that he could stay healthy for a full season or so and then traded him. The only real explanation is that they don’t believe he will ever be healthy.

Maybe his stock is higher than it has been the past two seasons
But less than half a season of health (he’s been on the DL this year) does not make up for the past several years of non-health. His stock is still lower than it could and should be. The only way it’s not selling low is if the A’s don’t think his stock will ever get higher than it is now. In other words, if the A’s don’t feel he will ever be healthy.
Otherwise, you might as well hold on to him and see if he can prove that he can stay healthy; because if he does stay healthy for an entire season or a season and a half then his stock will be much higher than it is now.
I mean, really, saying his stock is the highest since 2005 isn’t exactly high praise for this guy.

He should have gotten more for Harden. I know he could break down, but you would think the Cubs would be kind of anxious right after the Brewers beat them to Sabathia and Beane should have been able to take advantage of it. Not only that, but the A’s aren’t that far behind the Angels that they should be conceding anything. You also could make the case that Beane was dead wrong conceding this year before it had even started. Put Danny Haren and Nick Swisher back on this team along with Harden and they might have very well won the division. I’m all for rebuilding, but why start a rebuilding program when your team can be a contender?? Sometimes I think Beane tries so hard to show you he’s a genius that be becomes pretty stupid.
