Who would you want as next GM?
We all hear the Sabean grumblings, etc. and I think it's fair to state the majority (certainly not all though) of the McC community would want a new GM as soon as possible. I don't think Sabean is in danger of losing his job, but let's just say for the sake of imagination we were given the right to choose the next Giants GM. USS Mariner has a whole campaign going for them, so I thought it'd be cool to see what our community thinks about possible replacements. Who would you guys choose???

I have no problem with the job Sabean’s doing lately.
But if we were to get a new GM. Hire someone from the following:
Mike Rizzo, Assistant GM for the Washington Nationals (ex scouting director of the Arizona Diamondbacks)
Jed Hoyer, Assistant GM for the Boston Red Sox. He and Ben Cherington made the trade while Epstein was on hiatus that got Mike Lowell and Josh Beckett for Hanley Ramirez and other prospects. Regarded as one of the more up and coming young executives. Can’t hurt being Epstein’s next protege.
Logan White, Assistant GM and Director of Scouting for the Los Angeles Dodgers. White built a fantastic farm system for the Dodgers in recent years and also is considered a great future candidate for being a GM.
Brian Cashman is not a very good GM, so no thanks.
Forst I have no problem with as a candidate. Or Antonetti. They should also be on the list of candidates. Another would be Ruben Amaro Jr, who’s been the Phillies Assistant GM for quite some time, is young, a former player and is highly regarded around the league.

I continue to hope that Evan is offered the job
I would expect Roger to be his assistant and/or farm director. Mayor, I see you as more of a manager, leading our ragged troops into battle and juggling our lineup for maximum effect. Chris Lincecum could be our roving pitching instrutor, with Xanthan our SF pitching coach (he must, however, adopt the nickname “Rags” – it’s now a tradition). We’ve got several foodies we could put in charge of concessions. I’m hoping to direct the tv games.
If we HAD to replace our announcers, I’d vote for Josh and Garrett; I’m pretty sure they’d at least be entertaining. Although the photoshopped pics of Sabean with inappropriate comments wouldn’t go over as well on radio….

he should have resigned Beltre?
he didn’t replace Beltre with Edwards, he replaced Beltre and Green with Kent and Drew, which turned out to be good moves. He replaced Alex Cora’s production with Edwards and Antonio Perez

Plus
It was a smart move on DePo’s part to not overpay Beltre after one good year. How many years before that did the Dodgers keep bringing in other players to platoon with Adrian? And in a contract year he FINALLY puts it together? Thanks all the same, Beltre, but you can collect a fat paycheck from another sucker!

Not saying he should have resigned Beltre. Just saying that he did a really poor job following up a playoff birth, by putting together a shit team.
Kent was a good move. JD Drew not so much.

Drew's a tough call
He basically paid JD Drew 20 million for a 2 years. Drew was hurt the first year, limiting the value, but while healthy for 72 games Drew posted an OPS+ of 145. The 2nd year he was healthy and posted an OPS+ of 126, which was quite nice for the Duds.
I wouldn’t say it was a bad contract at all, especially when you way it the alternatives of trying to replace the production of Green and Beltre.
I think the real problem was that the 2004 Dodgers overachieved greatly and that set high standards for the following year. Rather than continuing to build a strong team bound for success, DePodesta had to do everything he could to try and match the success. All things considered, I think he did a good job with additions (Lowe, Kent, Drew, Cruz) and by not retaining certain key players (Green, Beltre, Finley).
Had Gagne and Drew not gotten hurt, I think the Dodgers would have won the division in 2005 with ease.

JD Drew during his Dodgers tenure
was about 40 runs better than the average RF offensively during his Dodgers tenure. He’s D is considered good, but let’s just put him at average defensively
$20M /2 for a player who in total was 40 runs above average is a fine signing.
He probably should have given Beltre the contract.

This is a funny time to start a new GM thread, because everyone has been pretty happy with Sabean’s moves lately, particularly the drafts and the signings of the young Dominican players. I think you should have waited until Aug 1 to see what he does at the deadline. If guys like Durham, Aurilia, Roberts etc are all still here, I think everyone will be a bit more vocal in calling for his head.
