Is there a better way to Wynn?

I must say, as a longtime reader of McCovey Chronicles, I feel it is my time.  I have feared the reckless actions of the sharks that surround this cove, but I will trust my faith, and leave myself to be eaten by the predators that circle in the depths, (positiveeuphemism smells blood).  Rand Wynn is the only true scenario where the boys stand to gain anything in return.  As much as I believe Durham's shiny skills  at the plate will allow those to poke and prod, I believe Wynn is the only option we have.  He has shown terrific skill in the outfield in his entire career (How often do you curse Wynn for a shitty read, or positioning), as well he has been the only 1-2 guy, other than Durham, to grace the lineup for what seems like an eternity.  I know I will be torn apart at the suggestion of this, but what's to say we can't get a couple of lower level guys (Rays) for a guy like Randy.  Can any playoff-bound team not use a guy like Randy?  Please teach me more about this baseball thing, if anyone asks, I was returning video tapes.

I didn’t want to but…oh boy. Look up the name Wynn on all kindsa places, and if you see anything other than FUCKIN MONEY, please share.

do like your moniker, however

Winn is really a decent average to very slightly above average OF, but he costs way too much and we probably won’t get much in the way of prospects in return, even if we eat his salary. A team that may have been interested was Cleveland, but they are out of it and gave up, so scratch that. If there’s an injury situation, he could get moved (NYY?) but still wouldn’t fetch much in return.

I think we’ll probably just hold on to him until he reaches free agency or trade him in a salary swap (like the Alfonzo/Finley a few years back.)

The Giants could probably get more for Molina than anyone else (other than the untouchables), but it sounds as if he isn’t currently available. We could probably trade Lewis, too and get something decent in return, but I’d prefer not to.

Bonds stands alone.

I have to agree

as a 4th outfielder at worst, on a playoff bound team… I can see Randy ending up at a few different places. It’s not as if big market teams hesitate on a guy who is reliable, whose pay is not above the 10 mark. As well, you have him for next year. I can see alot of teams biting on that mediocre consistency

by TheBigLeBowker on Jul 7, 2008 10:59 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

The folks over at Baseball Prospectus have speculated that since Randy makes so much money, we wouldn’t be able to get much more than salary relief for him.

I know

I know Mark thinks I learn EVERYTHING from BP, but I think the Giants can get something for Randy. The salary market for outfielders has essentially caught up to him.\

Randy is a class guy and a versatile, decent outfielder. But IMO he needs to move on to make room for his decade-younger fellow alum from San Ramon High, Nate Schierholtz. Not only is Randy hitting at about his career averages, but the Giants can point to his being primarily a second-half player in his career. Remember those two fabulous months in 2005 after the Giants acquired him at the trade deadline in 2005? All Randy did was put up an OPS of 1.071.

okay spelling, absolutely right, any baseball related information beyond that?

The reply button helps too.

Oh, and make sure you don’t post a repeat fanpost. Those annoy many of us. Not that this is one, I’m just giving a word of caution.

As to Randy Winn, his contract might make it a little difficult. He’s making a lot of money and he really isn’t that good. I really don’t think we are going to get much for any of Aurilia, Durham, Winn, Molina, Yabu, Vizquel, and Walker. That doesn’t mean that we shouldn’t trade them (except maybe Walker and Yabu).

HIS MAJOR SPELLING TRANSGRESSION (one!):
He left off the “y” in “Randy” , and even though he remembered it later some anal twit (Yeah , Nostocks , I’m lookin’ at you!) jumps him about it.

How my clubfingered style is to;lerated here w/o the same judgement is beyond me (key misstroke NOT corrected intentionally)...really , people. Lighten the fuck up.

Not to be some other anal twit (ok, so that’s a lie), but he also added a y to Winn. I assumed that was what peeps were talking about. Doesn’t bother me, though, at least not any more than all the other false player names do.

At some point, player name misspellings just become a fact of internet life…

do you think there is anyway to eat some of the salary to get a couple prospects in return?

by TheBigLeBowker on Jul 7, 2008 9:22 PM PDT   0 recs

I'm going to just keep saying this

Three years ago Randy Winn was exactly the player he is today, except three years younger and quite a bit cheaper. And the Mariners were able to move him to a “contender” for the bounty of a backup catcher and an ex-prospect pitcher with a bum arm. a) Why would we expect to get more in return for him than we gave up for him three years and many contract $$ ago, and b) would a Yorvit and Foppert-esque haul be enough to tempt any of us to want to move him?

My boy ain't fat, he's just big boned. Big bat, too.

by Roger on Jul 7, 2008 9:28 PM PDT   0 recs

As to b)

Yes. In this case Randy, as adequate a player as he is, would be addition by subtraction. We don’t need his services this year. And we should be able to replace his production from within.

Does Schierrholz get a chance to at least platoon if we trade Wynn? I guess, that is why I’m asking. Even if we get a semi-decent prospect, is he worth moving?

by TheBigLeBowker on Jul 7, 2008 9:35 PM PDT   0 recs

If Winn is gone, Schierholtz will most likely start in RF.

do you believe Roberts would see more playing time than Nate?

by TheBigLeBowker on Jul 7, 2008 9:45 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Sure looks like they’re leaving Nate for the Olympics for the summer. They’re staunchly resisting any and all opportunities to promote him. As far as I can tell they’ll announce the Olympics roster sometime next week and if Nate’s on it, I don’t believe the Giants will pull him off it for this season. He could still join the Giants in September in that scenario, but not much before that.

Cuz if he isn’t, then just the option of starting Nate next year should be motivation enough to move Winn.

Winn = Lose

He’s getting paid $8 mil this year. The season is 55% over so he’s owed $3.6 mil.

He’s added just .3 Batting Runs this year (measured above league average) and he’s not likely to add more than 1 more even if he goes on a tear. Call it maybe 2 or 3 wins added above replacement.

So the trade problem is simple. Find the club who needs 1 to 3 wins to make the playoffs, has $3.6 to through at the problem and a place to play him without gutting their offense as currently constructed.

Braves. Maybe Mets or Twins.

He’s not an impact player and won’t make a non-contender into a contender, and he’d be a downgrade for most of the contenders. He’s the bat that gets you the extra win to get into the payoffs and nothing more. Scratch the Braves in all probability.

Fred Lewis can stand under my umbrella.

The Mets are the perfect team for him. Moises is always hurt, and Church is in and out of the lineup with his concussion problem. One day they say he’s through for the year, and the next day he’s back playing. Winn is perfect because he’s durable and they can pay him with Moises’ money next season. The problem is that their farm system is barren. Fernando Martinez is the only prospect worth a damn, and they’re not giving him up for Randy Winn. There’s also many people who think Martinez is very overrated anyway.

by Ortman on Jul 8, 2008 11:22 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Randy

Randy is a second-half player, and the best scenario for the Giants would be for a contender to suffer a significant outfield injury. Randy can play any of the three outfield positions, and in an emergency, he can even play the hot corner!

by sharksrog on Jul 9, 2008 3:18 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Winn really has no excitement for me. There’s no reason to keep him this year, he’s just blocking Schierholtz. I’d rather watch Schierholtz strikeout than Winn, because Nate could actually benefit. Sabean said they had disposable money, so eat his contract, get a player, and call up Nate for RF.

by giants9107 on Jul 8, 2008 6:47 PM PDT   0 recs

I agree. I read somewhere that Sabean has no plans to trade Winn, but I think that was just GM speak for “I won’t eat his contract.” Even if Nate gets picked for the Olympic team they should make this move. Let Bowker platoon in right with Horwitz until he gets back, and call up Travis Ishikawa or Brett Harper to play first base.
