minor lines, 7/6/08
Sorry for the lateness on this, guys. A meeting ran late last night, and I overslept this morning when I planned to post this, but here we go!
Fresno Grizzlies (AAA): Fresno 6, Sacramento 5
Top Lines:
RF Justin Leone - 2-5, 2 R, 1 HR (12), 3 RBI, 2 SO, .232
DH Brett Harper - 2-5, 1 2B (19), 1 RBI, .305
1B Travis Ishikawa - 1-5, 2 R, 1 2B (5), 1 SO, .280
2B Eugenio Velez - 2-4, 1 R, 1 BB, 1 CS (9), .310
SP Nick Pereira - 5.0 IP, 4 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 4 BB, 5 SO, 1 HR, 5.99 ERA
RP Erick Threets - 2.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 SO, 4.13 ERA
RP Scott Munter - 1.0 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 SO, 4.35 ERA, W (2-0)
Game Notes: It was another 9th inning comeback for the Grizzlies, and this one was off the bad of a returning veteran. Justin Leone was playing his second game in Fresno after missing a month due to injury. His home run, a 3-run shot, came in the bottom of the 9th with two out to walk off the victory.
Leone is now 2 for 8 in his return, with five strikeouts. Harper is batting .333 over his last ten games, though five of those games featured at most 1 at-bat by Harper. Ishikawa had his third double in the last eight games, raising his slugging on the season to an even .600. Velez now has just 13 stolen bases in 22 attempts, although he has a 6-game hitting streak. Pereira has walked four in four of the last six games, and has struck out more than that in just two of those games. Threets had his fifth scoreless outing in a row, with 7 striketous and three walks in 5 2/3 innings. Munter gave up two hits for just the third time since returning to Fresno.
Connecticut Defenders (AA): Connecticut 6, New Britain 5
Top Lines:
DH Adam Witter -2 -4, 1 R, 1 2B (10), 1 HR (13), 3 RBI, .227
3B Ryan Rohlinger - 2-4, .244
LF Eddy Martinez-Esteve - 1-3, 1 R, 1 2B (11), 1 BB, 1 SO, .312
SP Garrett Broshuis - 7.0 IP, 2 H, 3 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 6 SO, 3.34 ERA, W (8-6)
RP Ronnie Ray - 1.0 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 2 SO, 3.64 ERA, H (2)
RP Kelvin Pichardo - 1.0 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 1 SO, 2.29 ERA, S (6)
Game Notes: Garrett Broshuis had one of those good games. Very good, even. He carried a perfect game into the seventh, when first baseman David Maroul misplayed a ground ball on the first batter of the inning. Broshuis allowed a single and double that allowed two runs, and then another error allowed a third run to score. Still Broshuis had some excellent numbers. Ray allowed just his second run in the last seven games, a span of 15 2/3 innings. Over that time, he has 12 strikeouts against two walks. Pichardo allowed his first run since June 19th, The three hits were an anomaly for him.
Witter's hot streak continues. He has three home runs in the last two games, and is batting 8 for 18 with two doubles, a triple and three home runs over that time. Martinez-Esteve had his third extra-base hit day in a row, after managing just 12 extra-base hits in 242 at-bats previously. Rohlinger is batting just .212 over his last ten games.
San Jose Giants (High-A): Rancho Cucamonga 3, San Jose 1
Top Lines:
2B Brock Bond - 3-5, 1 R, 1 2B (4), 1 SO, 1 CS (1), .429
RF Bobby Felmy - 1-4, 1 BB, 1 SO, .302
C Jackson Williams - 2-4, 1 SO, .310
3B Brad Boyer - 1-2, 2 BB, .363
LF Dan Ortmeier - 1-4, 1 SO, 1 HBP, .250
SP Henry Sosa - 5.0 IP, 7 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 1 BB, 5 SO, 2 HR, 1 HBP, 2.68 ERA, L (3-2)
RP Craig Whitaker - 2.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 SO, 1 WP, 5.18 ERA
RP Juan Trinidad - 1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 SO, 1.71 ERA
Game Notes: San Jose's offense faltered while the pitching gave up some big hits. Bond and Boyer were the only Giants to reach base three times, and for Bond, it paid off as he scored the team's only run. Bond now is batting 18 for 42 with four doubles in San Jose. He had just six doubles and one home run in 150 AB for Augusta. Boyer has seven walks and no strikeouts in his last nine games. Ortmeier made his first rehab appearance in this game. Williams is now 9 for 29 with a double in eight San Jose games.
Sosa was less effective than he has been in recent games. He was victimized by two solo home runs, one each in the second and fourth innings. He has now given up four home runs on the season, in 43 2/3 innings. Whiataker last struck out four in a game in a three-inning stint on June 17th. Trinidad has allowed ten hits and six walks over his last 12 innings, with nine strikeouts. Overall, in 31 2/3 innings, he's allowed 31 hits, 11 walks and 25 strikeouts.

RP Edwin Quirarte - 1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 SO, 2.45 ERA
Game Notes: This one looked like a blowout, but it wasn't that until the very end. With the game tied at two in the bottom of the eighth, Flores took a leadoff walk and Wright singled. After a sacrifice bunt advanced the runner, but an intentional walk loaded the bases, Curry hit an infield back to the pitcher to score the tie-breaking runs. An error, two singles and a sacrifice fly led to four more runs, six total in the inning.
Loberg drew his first walk in the last ten games, giving him 16 strikeouts and three walks on the season. Curry was batting 2 for his last 16 before this game. Wright hit his second double in the last three days, raising his slugging percentage to .365. Drew Bowlin's fourth start tied for his longest of the season. Quirarte now has six scoreless outings after allowing two runs in his first outing of the season.

It's you're lucky day
The wagon only stops whenever he gets an extra base hit. It made one of those rare stops today (er, yesterday). So go ahead and get on.

He’s younger than Loree, and at a higher level, but you never know. I mean, he is old enough to drink beer, so someone’s got to think he’s past his prime.
I don’t have a reading on Maday’s pitches, so I can’t give a good prediction about his ceiling. His control is good, his strikeouts are good, but he’s not overwhelming in either stat. He’s been pretty unhittable though. I wouldn’t start making banners and confetti and a band wagon yet, but he’s someone to keep an eye on.

Congrats to Scotty McClain.
By scoring a run on Justin Leone’s home run in the first inning tonight, he reached 1,000 runs. He is the only active minor leaguer with 1,000 runs and 1,000 RBI. That goes along with being the active minor league home run leader.
Oh, and then he hit a game tying home run in the 9th.
Oh, and then he hit a walkoff home run in the 11th inning.
He finished the game with 1,003 runs. Still playing hard.
The sad thing is…I think too many people will mock him for having been in the minor leagues long enough for such a mark.

Wow that’s really impressive. You have to have a lot of staying power to reach those marks. A lot of guys in McClain’s shoes, career minor leaguers, eventually just give it up when they don’t make a major league club.
Good for him.

Baron, you seem to have a good perspective
Does it bother you that McClain hasn’t been given more of a shot with the big club? I mean, I’m super happy about Bowker, so I’m not really complaining, but I do think that McClain could have been kind of a poor man’s Jack Cust if given a chance.

I think he could have been a low-rent version of Cust (wow that sounds really bad) though I had higher hopes for Harper in that sense. Now that McClain is playing third I think the Giants really should bring him up and see what happens. Playing first base meant he’d be behind Bowker and Aurilia. Third base means he’s being Castillo and Aurilia but if there’s any compelling reason to start Castillo over McClain at third I’ll drive my car right over the side of the overpass.
Basically what I’m saying is, what does this club have to lose by plugging in a potential power hitter and just letting it rip? If he sucks oh well. The team sucks anyway. At least it would semi-interesting.
