Correia to skip next start. Attempt to stop Timmy playing in the all-star game?
On the front page of the giants web site you can see Lincecum is set to start on the giants next game on tuesday.
Is this an attempt to prevent having Timmy play at all in the all-star game? Theres no official announcement as to whos staring the game besides some suppossed ’leaked’ story saying its Webb.
A pitchers position in the rotation has alot to do with his selection to start the game or not. Timmys spot was actually giving him an edge over Edison Volquez because Tim would be on a full 5 days rest by game in New York, while Volquez would have pitched just 2 days before the all-star game.
I know teams are always pretty much against their players playing in any extra games. In any World Baseball Classics or All-star games or anything like that to prevent injury. But i think what they are doing now is pretty weak.
Timmy would have been on 5 days rest by the day of the all-star game. Now he’ll be on 1. Basically guaranteeing he wont only not start, but wont play at all.
AND WHY? So he can get 1 more start on a team 11 games under .500. to help us win? thats laughable. We arnt ’going all the way’ this season, so why not give the fans something to enjoy this season and see our star player player in front of the whole world at yankee stadium. Pitch him 1 inning I dont care, as long as he plays.
But no, here we are, the giants have a perfect situation to give their young arm some rest, but no. They are going to skip a different pitchers turn in the rotation instead of giving Tim an extra day off, which would have resulted later in him only having to pitch about 1 or 2 innings from the July 10th to the 17th.
The Giants can no longer talk about being concerned with their young arms and wanting to shut down Lincecum in september again, because they have a great opportunity for him to have alot of rest and theyre choosing against it.

We're in "contention"
Sad to say but this proves that Giants management really believe that the team is in the playoff hunt. Along with Bochy’s inexplicable need to keep starting Vizquel every day when even Vizquel thinks he should be playing less. I really thought they had gotten past this delusion.
I desperately hope this doesn’t lead to a Shea Hindenburg trade at the deadline.

Cy Young considerations?
Maybe they’re just trying to get him more starts to help in the Cy Young race. Just a thought…

betcha
it’s not unimportant to Timmy. He could pitch brilliantly this year, win a Cy Young, and fall down on a slick road and end his career on a rainy December night in Washington. How can you say that award would be unimportant to the player?

I can only go by what I’ve heard. The reason Timmy has been moved up was because he isn’t going to be starting in the ASG. So there was no reason to accommodate the game. In the interview this morning, he’s okay with it. If he pitches, he pitches. It’s just the way it goes.

So...
if Timmy starts Sunday in Chicago, then plays in the All-Star Game on Tuesday, will the Giants consciously limit his pitch count on Sunday to make sure he can pitch an inning or two at Yankee Stadium?

wait
you’d rather see Timmy in 1-2 innings in a meaningless exhibition than 6-8 in a Giants game?

Are you implying that 2008 Giants games are not meaningless exhibitions?

I have no problem if it prevents him from pitching in the AS Game. Plus I’m guessing it sets him up nicely in the 2nd half.

first off, Tim throws every day, he says. Could probly handle an inning 2 days after a start.
Other question is—what happens to the rotation after the break? I think it was Sean Estes that was sent out by Baker to pitch the day ahead of the allstar break, and again the day after it. So the break was no break for Sean, just for everybody else. “that’s what your staff leader does…” kind of blather. Got hurt that year and has not been the same since.
Got to use the allstar break to re-align the rotation as needed (leftyrighty etc) and give rest as needed before August.

grinding all July and August on the 5th day nearly every start, I am guessing he got tired. Of course I can’t prove it led to his injury. But we could take time with the stats and see Estes was lousy by late that year, and lousy again the next.

Are you sure Correia is being skipped?? I saw somewhere they just flip flopped. With six games left before the break, Tim gets two starts and everyone else gets one.

The Giants website currently says Lincecum – Sanchez – Zito – Cain through Friday. That would put Correia on Saturday and Lincecum on Sunday. I think that counts as skipping Correia…

yes it does. Like I said though, I saw somewhere else that Correia was going to pitch Wednesday. Actually it’s important to me because I’m going to the entire Met series. The friend I’m going with on Tuesday will be happy about this switch, but my older son won’t be very happy on Wednesday!! And I’m not happy at all about Zito being switched into this series.

I’ll be upset right along with your son. Wednesday is the only game I can make it to this time around, and I’ll be mightily disappointed if I catch Correia after looking forward to Tim. Sanchez would be great, though.

Yo New York folk! Care to meet before or after the game in some Shea/Queens or NY location? We can rave about Sanchez or pout about missing Lincecum. Correia will have some big (er little) shoes to fill if he goes Wednesday.

It doesn’t matter if we’re not going all the way this season, a manager and organization isn’t just going to quit. They’re getting the ace two more starts which means two more wins right before the break, then they can retool the rotation so that Lin can start the second half as the number 1, maximizing his amount of starts, and maximizing the amount of chances the Giants have to win. 5 games back isn’t that bad.
by Mr. Clutch on Jul 7, 2008 3:28 PM PDT 0 recs
Another thing to consider here
first of all anybody who spends one second thinking about who is going to pitch in the All-Star game needs to grow up. This is a lame exhibition game that nobody over the age of 16 is allowed to care about.
But something that is actually worth considering… Krukow surprisingly made a good point on his KNBR show this morning (in between all of his pronouncements that Zito is back to be Hall of Fame level) that last year the Giants shut down Lincecum after 185 innings and this year they probably won’t want him to go much past 200. He has currently pitched 115 2/3 innings (a pace of 210 for the season by my math) and after 2 more starts he will be at around 128-130.
So what if come Sept. 10th he throws his 200th inning and he is one of the leading contenders for the Cy Young Award. Do the Giants either extend him out to 225 or so innings, a very large workload for a young pitcher who has never even approached that level before? Or do they make the proper decision for his future and shut him down around 200 IPs and face the resulting PR disaster of costing their young stud a shot at the Cy Young? That could be a nasty decision to have to make.
It seems to me that they shouldn’t be extending his innings right now and setting themselves up for that tough decision down the road, I would use the All-Star break as a chance to save him some innings at this point.
by FluLikeSymptoms on Jul 7, 2008 3:32 PM PDT 0 recs
Even worse
What if, heaven forbid, the NL Worst continues to be so bad that the Giants remain 4-6 games back in early September when Timmy’s at his 200 IP limit? Do the Giants risk his career for the miniscule chance of a playoff appearance?

i was also thinking along these lines – Why cram in so many starts, Bochy? Why not give a little rest and a little fame and fun at the same time to your young star?
And remember who picks the Cy Young awards… I bet two-three shut out innings at the All Star game would count as much as 2-3 Ws and/or 20-30 Ks in some of these guys’ calculations.

This is pure selfish/cheap fandom
but I’d have much rather Tim pitch Wednesday and in the All-Star game. I live in NY and didn’t pony up for Game-day video or Extra-innings (i don’t trust my internet connection for streaming video, and don’t have cable/dish/nothing). But I bought tickets for Wednesday and would have watched the All-Star Game (probably still will). These are my very limited chances to watch Lincecum play live. I probably can afford to go the Tuesday game, but that might be overextending my wallet (It seems that Mets tickets have gone crazy in their final season at Shea).
I also like seeing ‘the Franchise” (not my fav nickname but it works well for this sentiment) get his due respect/awe in the national market. It’s something the last Giants franchise player received only with heaping side-dishes of scorn and desserts of disrespect from the national media. I don’t require the mass media approval, but it is sorta nice. Although soon enough praise for Lincecum will be given with back handed attacks on Barry’s character.

I'm so f'ing angered by this
I bought tickets for Wednesday game to see Timmy, and now you’re going to give me Corriea??
Whatever I did to you Bochy, you fat-head, it will be nothing compared to the wrath that is going to be delivered on you if you switch Timmy out and prevent me from seeing him in person the one chance I have this year.

AS Break
Wonder if the Giants will change their pitching rotation alignment after the break. Currently SF has their LHPs pitching on consecutive days.
by wilriv21 on Jul 7, 2008 6:27 PM PDT 0 recs
My biggest issue on this whole thing
...is that Lincecum was really jazzed about pitching in the All-Star game. He’s already annoyed at being told to pitch to contact, now they’re screwing with his first AS appearance? I don’t like it.
by kaliber on Jul 7, 2008 6:46 PM PDT 0 recs
I'd rather see Timmy pitch in games that matter...
As sub-par as the Giants have been this season, they’re actually still in the race, because the rest of the division has been just as bad. Timmy is by FAR the best pitcher on the team, so I like the idea of getting him as many starts as possible. I’m sure he’ll still be able to throw a token inning in the AS game, but even if he can’t, his name’s still on the roster. It’s not like those stats matter anyway.

They get a little bonus for being named to All Star teams. I see a new copy of Rock Band in Tim’s future.
