Horwitz sent down

SAN FRANCISCO -- Giants outfielder Brian Horwitz was optioned to Triple-A Fresno following Sunday's game, manager Bruce Bochy announced. The right-hander hit .304 in his first 23 at-bats, but he had just one hit in his past 15 at-bats.

So... who's coming up? Boch says it definitely won't be Schierholtz, which I think is a good thing. Let the speculation begin! Maybe we'll see the return of Velez.

No Velez please

This is a good thing for Horwitz, i think. Send Denker down while yer at it and let these kids actually play some ball.

Nate’s injured, right?

Seeing as there are only 2 OFs on the Fresno roster, I suspect it will not be an OF.

Wait, is this to free up a spot for Dave Roberts??

Dave said he was due to begin his rehab assignment this week. Would they send a guy down before the assignment was complete?

I’m going to go with 25 and older “prospect” who isn’t much of a hitter and has no business being in the majors.

Which would be an improvement over bringing up somebody with promise who’d just sit on the bench the whole time.

a/k/a Travis Ishikawa.

Are they going to call-up another RP since Walker is hurt?

Then send that pitcher back down when Walker comes up and Roberts is done rehabbing.

Perhaps

Perhaps the Giants can get Rajai Davis back from the A’s. :) In seriousness though, I must say I’m baffled. I can think of several possibilities, but none of them really makes much sense.

by sharksrog on Jul 7, 2008 12:44 AM PDT   0 recs

Hennessey comes back up, maybe? Whenever these transactions occur I want to think that they just bring someone up who is already on the 40 man roster. The team has already cut off the dead weight so adding a name (Geno Espineli for example, as a relief pitcher is the most likely to come up) would be problematic.

Either that or Merkin’s coming back and I haven’t heard squat about his rehab.

Merkin Valdez (elbow strain) threw a successful bullpen session Saturday and will begin a rehab assignment in the upcoming week.
Valdez was placed on the disabled list May 15 after injuring his elbow. If the rehab assignment goes well, he should return shortly after the All-Star break.

who, oh who will be the call up....

lets narrow it down:
-there is already 41 guys on the 40 man roster, rule out anyone not already on.
-there isn’t anyone ready from the DL yet
so therefore it seems to be Velez and Ishikawa…so Velez seems most likely

Baggarly says there's room on the 40-man

From today’s Murky News:

Bochy said the club would bring up another position player to fill a bench role. The Giants have an empty spot on the 40-man roster and could purchase the contract of infielder Scott McClain, who was hitting .296 with 15 home runs for Fresno. Other candidates include Matt Downs and Eddy Martinez-Esteve.

To all of which I say…you gotta be kidding me.

Ort

Wouldn’t Ortmeier be the most obvious candidate? I saw he played a couple rehab games this weekend in SJ so, unless he had a physical setback, he’d probably be ready, and he’ll have to come back when the rehab time is up anyway.

The real problem is that the word Ortmeier just doesn’t even remotely resemble the word Mjolnir. Still, if it amuses me and nobody else, that’s still enough to get me to do it again. Which is how this one got a three play ride.

the rotoworld box on grant’s home page says Ort will get 2 weeks in the minors for rehab. It quotes the Chron, but I can’t find any specific dates there. Considering how lousy Ort was hitting, I hope he takes lots of BP down there.

Could be a third catcher, so Eliezer can pinch hit more? Or they DFA G-Rod, and bring up McClain for a friendly cup of coffee? Nothing to lose by playing him that I can think of (OK, nothing to gain either)

Crazy Rumor

I got a call from Randy Winn’s brother last night. He told me Randy and Rich Aurilia had been discussing Pablo Sandoval being brought up. Doesn’t make much sense to me so I’ll believe it when I see it.

Speed, defense... and an almost fanatical devotion to getting picked off.

by SF Pete on Jul 7, 2008 10:42 AM PDT   0 recs

That would be fucking insanely stupid

which means the likelihood of the Giants doing it is about 50%.

Bochy quote on the club site:
“we’ll bring somebody up who has been getting consistent time and can help us.”
McClain, Ochoa, and Velez have been playing steadily. Also Ishi; Harper mostly DHing.
I’ll stay with Mcclain

adopter/sponsor of "Go, Antoan" Richardson

by foothillsfan on Jul 7, 2008 11:21 AM PDT   0 recs

The only point in bringing up Mcclain

is if you get rid of Castillo.

Either is just roster filler until we find a solution @ 3b.

There is a very good chance that McClain is a guy who has made a MiL career out of feasting on AAAA pitchers and can’t hit at the big league level. It’s questionable he would even be able to help us this year.

I would be really really dissapointed

If Durham is still here by the deadline. He is hitting really well and probably will for the remainder of the year, and he could really help a contending team who lacks at the position.

Durham

9th in OPS in all of ML.

He would be a significant upgrade for many “contending” teams such as the Mets, Brewers, Dodgers (lol!), Drays and even Yankees (wtf is going on w/ Cano?).

He better not stay on this “contender” or else I will be really upset.
