dave roberts is my internal dilemma.

Hard to admit, but i like dave roberts. have always liked dave roberts. even when he was a bum i used to think “god, i wish the weaker giants would at least make up for their lack of ability by fouling off 20 pitches and stealing 3 bases a game like Dave Roberts does.”
I got a chance working with media to be there for an interview when he was with the Padres, and he’s seriously one of the friendliest cats there is. Let us into his home, sat down and ate lunch with us and talked to the whole crew about baseball, the Red Sox, turned off his phone because he was telling us stories about meeting some greats…

I was excited when he first got the Giants, so it kills me a little to think that he’s not a good fit for this team anymore. But that’s the reality.

I do like seeing him back on the bench. He’s got a contagious smile and the guy not only plays hard, but I imagine he’s that type that gets on others if they don’t look like they’re having fun out there (“this game is fun, goddamit!!”).

by ExcuseMeSwing on Jul 5, 2008 9:22 PM PDT up reply actions

Yeah I think Dave is just a great guy, but as a ballplayer he’s over. It’s sad. But he’d make a good coach, I think.

I agree totally. He seems to be pretty understanding of the reality of things though. I don’t think he’ll complain too much about being on the bench. And he probably is a more useful player than Horwitz, to be honest.

Matt Cain: He'll save children, but not the Dodger children.

Compared to Horwitz, yeah. But at the expense of someone who’s actually doing good things? Never.

No, but I think he could still be useful as a 4th/5th OF

The key is actually using him as one. If he’s starting over Freddie, I think you and I will both have to cut some bitches.

Matt Cain: He'll save children, but not the Dodger children.

by jponry on Jul 5, 2008 9:25 PM PDT up reply actions

I tend to think he's not done

He’s always been a fourth outfielder type, and he may still be—just an overpaid one.

Freddie, though, will not be supplanted.

good point. that contract adds some salt to the wound

whenever he plays over anyone else.

that being said…if roberts comes back as a roleplayer and begins taking at-bats away from Omar in crucial situations, i will not disapprove.

by ExcuseMeSwing on Jul 5, 2008 9:37 PM PDT up reply actions

I agree, especially if they’re able to move Winn.

Of course, if the team is able to find someone who wants Roberys for the stretch drive and is willing to give up anything of use, I’m not opposed.

I think Roberts has definite value off the bench and would rather they keep him than going out and trading for someone to help them with their own playoff push.

I’m still LOL. Is he eating nachos? I’d like some nachos right now. I’m really hungry all of a sudden.

Zito

I didn’t see the game but I watched on gametracker, it seemed like Zito was pitching well. How well did he really pitch? or did the Dodgers just not hit very well?

He looked legitimately awesome. His curve was really great.

Caught the last of Zito and the comeback on Midnight Baseball in Phx.

And some (bad reception) of the Ray postgame interview.
He really does sound like a genuinely nice guy.Sell him.
I refuse (today) to get swept up in this “contending” buzz because the NL West means LESS than nothing.
Of course if the offense was consistent it would be a different story , then I’d get all ridiculous.

Well , more so.
