Around SBN: Are The Orioles Bad Or Unlucky With Their Young Pitching?

Rockies cameraman whacked by popup on TV

You guessed it, my dad got beaned in the top of the head by a flying ball. He saw through his viewfinder Garrett Atkins coming at him, closer and closer, and he was thinking, Wow, I sure am getting a great shot of Atkins ... and then WHUMP ... ball -> head. He got lucky because he was wearing one of those thick headsets and the ball bounced off the one inch of padding on the headset rather than right off his head. He is OK, no goose egg, no headache, no concussion (we think). But he's having weird nerve stuff going on in his leg. I'm going to make him go to the doctor on Monday if it's not gone (as much as I can make him do anything from SF when he's in Denver ...).

Apparently this clip has been played a bunch in Florida and Denver and he might have even gotten on ESPN but he's not sure. The announcers mentioned my dad also happened to be a Vietnam vet, its being a patriotic holiday and all.

So if anyone saw that, that's my daddy, forever putting himself on the line for his country, whether in Nam or the American pastime.

Your dad is a total gamer.

"While conservatives tell you 'leave things alone and no one will lose,' and liberals tell you 'interfere a lot and no one will lose,' baseball says 'someone will lose.' Not only says it - but insists upon it! ... Democracy is lovely, but baseball's more mature." BVCE supports SF Dugout and Manny Burriss.

He got mentioned on TV. If the announcers starting talking about me or, say, my mom, I would probably (assuredly) recount every last detail of it. It’s just kind of cool….I don’t think tk was trying to start a foreign policy discourse

Billy Ripken is not a fuck face

TK is the last person on this planet who would start foreign policy discourse. She usually leaves the pot stirring to me.

Gamerness is apparently a family trait.

Of course, if he REALLY loved you, he would have turned around and let the ball hit him on the ass, you know, as a show of solidarity.
Glad he’s ok!!

If my head is full of white hairs by the end of this season.. I blame Brian Wilson. (I'm only 22, dammit!)

Yes, thank g-d

He said he feels like he got struck by lightning and survived. Not that level of pain of course but that level of good luck.

It’s funny, I honestly didn’t think of the political ramifications behind posting this. After Vietnam he became a crazy hippie, and then always a Democrat; he wanted to go to the war to have an adventure and get the hell out of NYC. He was 18 and kind of saw this as his best option. I don’t agree, of course, because he could have gotten killed (not to mention the whole political thing!) but that’s how it shook out. But I definitely think of him more as a left-wing hippie than a military type. He partied his way through Nam, doing radio ops, and came out with the GI Bill and went to broadcasting school in Florida, something he wouldn’t have been able to do without the Bill.

I’m not offended at all by Positive’s comments. It definitely made me think. Substrata of meaning and all that. It was a kind of wacky story to me, but there’s always more than what you think there’s going to be.

And thanks for all the well-wishes. We’re very glad he’s OK.

Notgardo, I still love you -- but you're grounded. No Guitar Hero for a month, no Cheez-Its for two months, and NO BASEBALL! This hurts me as much as it hurts you.

I lost 30 in a month. Don’t try that at home. They make you eat through a tube in your arm if you do!
