Manny to the Bums
Can't wait for him to whine about agreeing to decline arbitration and losing his option years. Dude is going to be in for a rude awakening during the offseason.
Also, this is going to suck for all the other outfielders not named Manny Ramirez.
Think the Dodgers make the playoffs?

Well, assuming the Dodgers go with a Manny, Kemp, Ethier outfield, it’s hard to not see them as vastly improved. However, that won’t happen, and either Kemp or Ethier will be benched in favor of Pierre and Jones. They are still much better though and probably are the favorites in the West at this point.

Speaking of the bums...
I think it was Steve Berthiaume on SportsCenter the other night when they were breaking down the NL West race. Whether intentional or not, he referred to the Dodgers as the bums. I almost fell off my couch. It went something like this:
“Now two teams in the NL West at .500 or above. The D-backs holding on to first place with the bums just a game back.”
Anyone else hear it???
Here's to Kemp, Loney, LaRoche, Hu, and Kershaw not panning out.

Not that unusual. It is a very old and widely recognized moniker for them.
Dates back to Brooklyn, “Dem Bums,” and all that? History? Anyone? Anyone?

The Dodgers were named after the vagrants that would sleep in the middle of busy trolley car tracks. The bums would eventually have to dodge the trolley cars and voila, you have an origin story.

Oh, thanks, but that's not what I meant.
By “History?” I wasn’t asking for the history (you’re not quite correct… but on the right TRACK. HEY!), but rather saying that others should recognize that “Bums” is a historical and long-standing reference to the Dodgers, so when some smartass in the media says “Bums,” it’s old.
Another news flash: “Jints” is sometimes used derogatorily for “Giants.” Granted, usually by people who then go on to complain that Herbert Hoover is going to drive the economy off a cliff in his Lasalle.

Being new representation, Scotty doesn’t make any commission off Manny’s options. Only a new contract will produce revenue for the Boras Corp.

The Pirates made out like kings in this deal. Moss, Hanson, LaRoche plus a fourth for Jason Bay? That’s some serious sit around and let ‘em sweat deal making.

I think all the teams made good deals in this trade. Apparently the two prospects the Red Sox gave up weren’t part of their overall plan.

Clips
The Clips are gunna suck anyway. I hope the W’s go out and give Shaun Livingston though. That would be kick ass if he rocked it and in the same game Baron’s leg falls off and Livingston went for 20-10 and said Cuck the Flippers.

Good move for Boston and Pittsburgh. Dumb for LA. As usual.

Opposite
Actually I think ned did a good job on this one. They are paying him nothing and they are going to get two months of attention from all over the country for Andy LaCrap and some dude who just came off of Tommy John surgery. Plus they get two picks for Manny. I still think that the D-Backs pitching will hold off the Fodgers. Duck em.
by Big Daddy J on Jul 31, 2008 4:00 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
See your assuming Ned won’t pick up Manny’s 2 year option at 20 mill per. I think he will, especially if Manny hits for LA over the next 2 months. Its a team option too so Manny really has no say, and I doubt Manny will have a huge market anyway on the open market. I think the Dodgers could have done better with the prospects they traded + another prospect or two for some younger talent that would remain with the team longer.
All this does is take playing time away from talented youngsters and give the team a false sense of contending while weakening their farm system. I’m just fine with that as a Giants fan and love what Agent Ned did in that aspect. But if I was a Dodger fan I’d be pissed off.
by Hobbes2d on Jul 31, 2008 4:17 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
the two options years were eliminated from Manny’s contract as part of the deal (that was his condition for accepting the trade). Also, he agreed to decline arbitration, thus guaranteeing the 2 draft picks.
by FluLikeSymptoms on Jul 31, 2008 4:21 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
That’s only because Manny wants MORE money. As for arbitration that can’t be decided until after the season. I can totally see Ned resigning him and giving him way too much money. Which is fine by me. Again I’d be pissed if I was a Dodger fan. He’s more reckless than Sabean.
by Hobbes2d on Jul 31, 2008 4:36 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
well, they can decide that in the off-season, but Dodger fans don’t have to worry about him picking up the options because they no longer exist
by FluLikeSymptoms on Jul 31, 2008 4:43 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
McCourt is not going to let Ned add another 20MM OF'er
The McCourts are not going to let Ned invest 20 million in to another outfielder(theyre already pretty pissed about the other shitty signings hes made). The redsox are paying his entire salary right now so his salary is not a problem. Unless they get Jones off their salary somehow, manny is pretty much gone.
Also, If the Dodgers have any problems with their farm system(which I don’t believe they do), theyre going to have a ish load of type A/B free agents this offseason to help them restock their system.
Unless Andy LaRoche becomes the next Mike Schmidt, I really don’t see the downside to this deal for LA. They’re not paying him, he lost all his team options and he HAS to decline arbitration.
by superk1ng on Jul 31, 2008 4:52 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I agree
he ain’t coming back, so I don’t see what the possible downside is to this deal (other than possibility that he or Jeff Kent kill each other).

I agree
Pretty riskless and fun move by Ned.

It's not a 2 year option.
It is 2 options, for one year each. Meaning the team could have gone year to year with him. Which means the moment that he looks like he is toast, he’s gone.
Going year to year with Manny for $20M is far better than giving some ridonkulous contract to Mark Teixeira.
