So are we rebuilding or not?
I'm sick of this half and half bullcrap we have been getting. Why the hell does Castillo take over 2nd base. Why does Omar continue to start after they said he was gonna sit more often like 3 different times. Management needs to grow a pair and pick one at this point. Don't try and feed me this rebuilding phase thing if we aren't going to do it. Big Head or Big Sabes, someone needs to be gone.

Getting Brian Sabean to say we’re rebuilding would be like getting George W. Bush to say that we’re in a recession.
Too political?

true, but how much of that was tied directly to rising energy costs, and not actual GDP growth?

1.9% is adjusted for inflation.
It was driven by big burst of exports, decline in imports (weak dollar FTW!). A big decline in inventories held real GDP back from even better numbers.
Unemployment has gotten worse, though and that’s mostly what people care about. Most of the time it’s tough to say whether we’re in recession until after the fact. I would apologize on behalf of economists everywhere, except that people don’t really give much thought to how hard it is to do macroeconomics.

Ummm
didn’t the economy grow last quarter because the government issued $150 billion in stimulus checks?

Consumption got a nice little bump last quarter, so the stimulus may have had something to do with that. BTW every populist politician who complained that all of the stimulus would just go to China (via increased imports from) were all pretty damn wrong.

We’ll see how it looks in a few months. The 4th quarter of 2007 was just downgraded from 0.6% growth to a 0.2% decline.

I think it's Big Head's fault
He has always had a tendency to play and favor the vets. At this time, he is a horrible choice to lead this team in the direction it should be going.
by lincecumania on Jul 30, 2008 8:27 PM PDT 0 recs
I can provide some answers
Omar: They are trying to give him playing time as he will retire most likely. Does it suck? Absolutely. They are playing him for the same reason they aren’t releasing him.
Castillo: They are seeing what he looks like over at 2B, most likely for an 09 dance-off between Frandsen and Castillo. If he sucks before 09, which is has, I’ll bet they just ditch him in the offseason. Essentially it is their way of seeing what it would look like if they acquired a 3B.
by Giant Voodoo on Jul 30, 2008 9:18 PM PDT 0 recs
I think it's okay for now
after tommorow it wont be. Right now it kinda makes sense to play them because they need to advertise the vets as much as possible to try and trade them. It’s not like Roberts, Vizquel, and all of them have permanent starting roles, though.
by boonitez on Jul 30, 2008 10:35 PM PDT 0 recs
My feeling:
Castillo at second base: showcasing a surprisingly effective utility-man for playoff contenders, rather than a sub-par hitting third baseman.
The answer will truly be how it is played after the deadline.

if he’s fairly decent at 2b (lol!) then they won’t trade him. They’ll make him a part of future plans.

Half and Half
You are exactly right about the half and half stuff. The Giants under the present ownership group have been doing things half-assed for a long time. They know no other way of going about things.

I think you'll find this funny, Mayor
Last year, my writing partner and I were pitching a comedy to these two ex-investment bankers who now run their own production company. Late in the pitch, we reveal that our seemingly uber-moral, self-righteous antagonist is actually a hypocrite by having a hooker on the street recognize him, saying, “Hey baby, you here for your usual half-and-half?”
One of the producers stops me right there, in the middle of the pitch, to say, “I’m sorry, but what exactly is a half-and-half?” So I have to sit there and explain it to a room full of people, including a D-girl and a very young, innocent-looking secretary who’s taking notes on everything I say. It was one of the most self-conscious, embarrassing moments of my life. But we did end up selling the pitch, so the story has a happy ending—much like a half-and-half.

Congratulations! I applaud any writer who succeeds in selling a pitch. Never underestimate the likelihood of producers’ approving something that involves hookers and sexual hypocrisy!

Question: So are we rebuilding or not?
Answer: No. No we’re not.

We ARE rebuilding, indirectly, by doing nothing...
If the Giants stand pat and just play the old guys, they will be an awful team because it is obvious the old fogies are wearing down as the season goes on. If they play the young guys the Giants would not win a greater number of games due to the inexperience of the rookies.
So in either case the Giants appear as if they are going to be in a downwards spiral for the rest of the season. Indeed the freefall has probably already started.
If the season were to end today the Giants would have the fourth worst record in the majors. They are three games better than the Padres and four games better than the Mariners. It is not inconceivable to think the Giants could end up with a worse record than either of them. I think the Nationals are a lock for the worst record in baseball, and as we have seen, even the Giants cannot out-stink the Nats.
So it appears the Giants could have anywhere from the second to the fourth pick in the 2009 June draft. According to an article in ProjectProspect, there could be some interesting bats available: http://www.projectprospect.com/article/2008/07/30/cape-cod-league-update.
If Strasburg is anywhere close to what he was this season, the Nats will be all over him, like, well, gnats. The 2009 class at this early stage seems to be more weighted towards college pitchers, so the possibility of the Giants getting a hitter like Dustin Ackley or Grant Green seems very possible. And if they concentrate on drafting high upside bats in the early rounds like they did in this year’s draft, they can further infuse the system with good offensive prospects.
