Open Trading Deadline thread

Give us your rumors, your ideas, your thoughts. There are going to be a lot of them flying around in the next couple of days. So far we have the Twins interested in Aurilia, Giants interested in Beltre, and groug interested in farts. Also, supposedly the Marlins offered Mike Jacobs for Molina straight up. Hopefully, there will actually be more action than us just sitting around, hitting refresh over and over on [perferred sports site].com (or turning on the Auto-reload feature if you're on Opera/Firefox). Have at it!

Baggarly sez:
When I talked to Brian Sabean yesterday, he said he wasn’t sitting on any fair-value offers for his relievers, nor were any teams still trying to pry away Matt Cain or Tim Lincecum. He did seem a bit cagey when I asked if he was optimistic of getting something done. "There could be something," he said.

Vaguely interesting?

Yeah, just saw it was Professor Farns, interesting. Nice pick for the Yankees if Pudge turns down arbitration, he should net them some draft picks. But he could also accept.

risky business offering Pudge arbitration. I’m guessing they think Posada will be back next year, but in any case, he helps them this year.

I guess that means Inge is going back to catcher full time. Not sure that helps them in their pennant run.

Bonds stands alone.

Not really

The talk is that Posada is done as catcher, that if he comes back in 2009, it will be at 1B.

I guess that means the Yanks won’t be exercising Giambi’s $22M option for 2009…probably a good move.

Posada is about to turn 37 and the Yanks are on the hook for $39.3M from 2009-2011 (during which season he’ll turn 40). He’s been relatively healthy during his career until this year, but he’s a lot less valuable as a 1b than as a catcher.

Bonds stands alone.

by Evan on Jul 30, 2008 1:53 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Win now.

Inge is probably a better hitter than Pudge, probably worse D. On the whole, a wash. They pick up a decent reliever in Farnsworth, with decent peripherals, to strengthen a shaky pen.

They don’t have prospects to trade, so they are basically trading away, besides Pudge, the 2 draft picks that Pudge could have brought them, to strengthen the roster for this season.

I don’t think that’s a good move for them, their farm is pretty decimated after last offseason. They should be stocking up wherever possible.

It is true that Farnsworth’s ridiculous HR rate should improve in Comerica.

Inge a better hitter than Pudge?

Inge is hitting about 50 points above his career OPS, Rodriguez is hitting about 50 points below his, and their season numbers are almost identical.

Granted, Pudge is not likely to get better at his age, but realistically neither is Inge.

The All-Father is now a Giant!

by EliminateMe on Jul 30, 2008 2:54 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Here are their OPS+ last 5 years

from 2004-2008.

Inge: 109, 100, 98, 80, 101.

Pudge: 136, 94, 97, 85, 101.

I’m not sure why you’re using career averages, when Pudge is 36 years old. And Inge’s career numbers are dragged down by his first 3 years when he had had OPS+s of 24, 64, 64.

Their offense this year is the same. Pudge was better last year, the year before that they were about equal, and Inge was better the year before that year. Pudge was much better 5 years ago, but I don’t see how that has much relevance.

Given that Inge is 5 years younger than Pudge, I’m willing to bet on Inge being better for the remainder of the season.

by Lyle on Jul 31, 2008 7:53 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

What?

In what universe is Inge a better hitter than Pudge? And what do you mean “probably” worse D, he is most definitely worse D, in fact, he hates playing catcher, that’s why they were looking to move him in spring training and why people here speculated about whether or not to get him or not in trade. He’s been basically a Pedro Feliz clone at 3B, both offensively and defensively, that tells you enough about how that works for the Tigers.

Didn’t Farnsworth used to be with the Tigers?

I don’t think Pudge would yield two draft picks, as some suggest, because he’s not good enough now for a team to sign him before the deadline, and not good enough for the Yankees to offer him arbitration, he could get an arm and leg there (he got $13M this season and thus could get more in arbitration). However, I can see them signing him to a still princely sum (say $10M per) for multiple years (he’s 36, so maybe 3 years with option) which should keep him happy.

by obsessivegiantscompulsive on Jul 30, 2008 3:45 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

He's not a Feliz clone at 3b

he’s a pretty significantly better hitter than Feliz, Feliz has the better D. Last 5 years, except for one year in 2007, he has consistently been around a 100 OPS+ offensive player. Feliz is around 85.

And if you bother to look at how Inge has been used by the Tigers this year, he’s already been playing some catcher.

Yes, he hates playing catcher. He also hates not playing at all even more.

by WilliamVanLandingham on Jul 30, 2008 2:04 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

What the heck? This is a great trade for the Yankees. They get a big upgrade at catcher, all they have to give up is a pretty mediocre reliever and they possibly get two draft picks out of it at the end of the year.

Matt Cain: He'll save children, but not the Dodger children.

by jponry on Jul 30, 2008 2:16 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

You make a good point regarding Pudge being a Type A Free Agent. Yankees do have a decent bullpen help besides Farnsworth. I would rescind my statement but they are the fucking Yankees, so to hell with them. Call me Stubborn.

Before you criticize someone, you should walk a mile in their shoes. That way, when you criticize them, you're a mile away and you have their shoes.

by WilliamVanLandingham on Jul 30, 2008 3:20 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

I don't think he's stupid because of that trade

I think he’s stupid because he overvalues his prospects. If he had traded just some of them the Yankees could have been at the top of the division by now. They would be signifigantly less screwed in their rotation if Cashman had just given up ONE of Hughes, Chamberlain, or Ian Kennedy. That could’ve landed them Sabathia or Santana.

by boonitez on Jul 30, 2008 3:28 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Uhh, you guys are aware that the Yankees

current starting catcher before the trade is Jose Molina, no? And that they were one injury to Molina away from having Chad Moeller as their starting catcher?

ZIPS: Milledge: 466 HR, 485 2B, 2282 hits, 278-379-524

by rfloh on Jul 30, 2008 2:47 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Yes, and the Red Sox are one injury to Dustin Pedroia away from having Alex Cora being their second baseman. You usually don’t get that much production out of catcher, so I don’t see the big deal. Then again, the veteran savyness that comes with Pudge might put them over the top if baseball playoffs weren’t such a freakin crapshoot.

Before you criticize someone, you should walk a mile in their shoes. That way, when you criticize them, you're a mile away and you have their shoes.

by WilliamVanLandingham on Jul 30, 2008 3:27 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

The problem with your analogy

Jose Molina is basically Alex Cora. So the Yankees already have “Alex Cora” starting.

Veteran savvyness of Pudge? Here are Jose Molina’s OPS+, last 5 years: 76, 70, 65, 61, 58.

...the Tigers are now contending for the playoffs with Brandon Inge as their first-string catcher?

Why Not

a young power hitting corner infielder. Sure his BA and OBP are ridiculously low, but a legitimate power threat (more than double the amount of HR any other Giant has) for a short term fix (which is what Bengie is).
Obviously it is not a slam dunk (it rarely is) and it I don’t know if even I would make the trade, but it is something to think about.
