Sabean interested in Beltre?
Meh, I say. He's too old and had one flukey season with the Dodgers. Let's wait for better options, says I.

better than Castillo, but costs a lot more. I’d rather spend that money on signing our draft picks.

I wouldn't mind getting Beltre
needless to say I wouldn’t give up ANYTHING for him, I would take on the whole salary and only give up a non-prospect. The Giants have no 3B option for the forseeable future, even optimistic options like Ryan Rohlinger and Connor Gillaspie are a few years away so, like or not, they are going to spend some money on a 3B this winter. I’m not sure that committing $20 million or so to Beltre for this year and next (his contract runs through the end of next year) is any worse than signing Joe Crede or Casey Blake to a 3 year contract this winter.

Beltre would be a pretty good target, if we don’t have to give up anything really good for him. He’s been about a 105-110 OPS+ bat the last three years and he plays good defense. And I think I’d much rather have him for a year and a half than Crede or Blake for three (like Flu said above)
Then again, stink of Dodger.

He’s a much better player than Pedro.
2006-2008, Pedro OPS+’d 79, 81 and 86.
Over the same time span, Beltre’s done 105, 112, and 108,
Chris Dial this year has Beltre at +6.9 runs on offense and +7.8 runs on defense. (+14.6 total)
Pedro is -10.4 runs on offense and +8.1 runs on defense. (-1.9 total)
They are both good defensive third basemen from the DR but Beltre is a much, much better hitter (and there’s always the chance he has another crazy good walk year like he did in 2004.)

Yeah, I would definitely take Beltre if the price was right (dumbest term ever? Yes.)

Just to be Captain Obvious here. ( Let me put on my mask!) Safeco is notoriously hard on RHB.
Yes I would be more fine with 1+years of Beltre then 2-3 years of Blake, Blalock or Crede. Short term he owns either of those 3. And he very likely return a draft pick is not resigned. The other 3 not so likely.

walks strikeouts and average 2005-2008
2005: 38, 108, .255
2006: 47, 118, .268
2007: 38, 104, .276
This looks only marginally better than Pedro. I think Beltre would frustrate many of us like pedro did. he does drive in runs, tho, you’re right.

If you grade a player’s offensive output solely on walks, strikeouts and batting average, I guess he looks only a bit better than Pedro. When you look at many other things, like OPS and so on, it becomes clear he’s much better offensively than Pedro.

just out of curiosity
how much time is going to have to pass before every single mention of a third baseman cease to elicit an immediate comparison to Pedro Feliz?

I have an inside source that said we were discussing Beltre with Seattle a while back before Bavasi was fired. It involved Dave Roberts and Keiichi Yabu.

As awful as that move would be from Seattle’s point of view, it would still be Bavasi’s best move ever.

to Bill Vavasi!
I can’t be the only one who thinks of those Bill Brasky SNL sketches whenever I hear his name.
As far that “rumor” I think it is utter bullshit, but if we could somehow get them to take Roberts for Beltre that would be incredible
