Open Gameday Thread, 7/3
Chicago Cubs at San Francisco Giants, Jul 3, 2008 4:05 PM PDT
Tim Lincecum days make me feel like the Beggin' Strips dog in front of a plate full of actual bacon. Shawn Estes in 1997 was the Beggin' Strips; Lincecum is the bacon. You don't think there's much of a difference until you get the real thing.
It's Lincecum!

What exactly has to happen for Vizquel not to start every day? A sub-.100 BA? A sub-.300 OPS? The drowning of several adorable puppies?
Look, it's simple
Either Vizquel will come out of his slump or he’ll retire. He hasn’t retired yet; therefore, he will come out of his slump.
QED.

Actually, that would be a good pool to start.
What will Omar’s BA (and for how long) be when the Giants do something about him, like switch to an obvious platoon w/Burriss, ease him toward retirement, whatever.
I take .110 for three consecutive days.
I'm adopting a true Giant and an awe-inspring gamer: tk. "Atta babe."
I calculated and he has to go like 0-40 to get his average down in the .100 range.
This is kind of ridiculous to think about.
I really hope he retires. It shows class and he is a classy player.

Doing some math
The thing that’s especially remarkable about how low Vizquel’s stats have fallen is that he got off to a really good start. Looking through box scores from mid-May, in his first five games, he was 8/18 – a .444 average. He also had three walks in one game. Since then? 34 games, 110 at bats, 11 hits. That’s a .100 BA. One extra base hit in that whole period.
It’s getting to the point where I feel sorry for him when Bochy insists on playing him. As brilliant as his career has been, it’s got to be embarrassing for him to go out there every day and fail so badly.
I completely agree. I was hoping Vizquel could go out with some dignity, but with him batting at a buck fifty, I think that possibility is gone.

That’s the correct usage.
But it also means (living) flesh.
In Chinese, if you tell the butcher that his meat is too expensive, he might get mad at you and tell you that your mother’s flesh is too cheap, using the same word.
you can't block the Bocock
And you might accidentally call his mother a horse or hemp, depending on your tone.
I wish I could’ve taken more than one semester of Chinese in college. It’s a fun language.

they “gave” vizquel a hit.. his first hit in 19 AB’s
over here
It’s still 1-2 to castillo

Vizquel is at the stage in his swing and career
where he should bunt every AB, no matter the situation
before that he was 0 for his last 24…. so that means he is 2 for his last 43… impressive

Manny just threw his glove in the corner in disgust

by FairweatherFan on Jul 3, 2008 6:09 PM PDT up reply actions
And, as usual
Manny’s throw went further than Omar’s hit
For the record
Before that “hit,” he was 11/112 since the first five games, when he went 8/18. 11/112 works out to a .098 BA. Whoo.
I hate this - why do we have runners on 1 and 3 now ?

Did not get to see Timmah...
how did he look? Looks like a lot of pitches for 6ip and only 1bb.
I am Cameron Wood and this is my son and business partner CW Culberson.
he had great stuff
and the cubs only hit 2 balls well
unfortunately one of those drove in 2
the ump squeeze him a lot
fukudome took up 25 pitches
and the cubs got most of their baserunners in 2 strike counts just protecting the plate.
timmy easily could have given up 0 w/ how nasty he was today

Tyler and I will go into seclusion if it happens
we won’t care what people say
Honestly
Did anyone think we would have a 10 game winner by the break? I mean, I had high hopes for this staff, but I really thought we would be lucky to have a 15 game winner all year.

They were joking about some ad copy, and Miller made a remark about how he loves his job, but maybe he shouldn’t assume Flemm does too – “Maybe you’re like Joe Buck.” Talked about how Buck doesn’t watch baseball but never misses The Bachelorette. Then ripped Kent as well for his past comments about not being a baseball fan – “How about you just keep that to yourself?”
Jon Miller is the absolute no-doubt best.
Trent Kline: Decentish. Also, my website is called ChatterBalks Dot Com and on it I make jokes about things.
OMGGGGG
Timmy struck out 104 in 66 2/3 innings in the minors (reading SI article on him)? Good god! I think he might be pretty good…
Interesting take by Miller regarding Romo
He apparently warmed up in the bullpen without anyone else when the Giants were leading just 4-3.
Bochy seems to have a lot of faith in him
He used him yesterday in the close game when I thought he should have used Yabu.

Lewis love from the Talented Mr. Roto
Player A (53 percent): .282 AVG, 51 R, 6 HR, 23 RBI, 13 SB
Player B (100 percent): .301 AVG, 44 R, 9 HR, 28 RBI, 6 SBI feel these guys are close because three home runs and 20 batting average points is about the same as seven runs and seven steals (considering steals are so valuable in Roto play). Player B is slightly better overall—fine, because that’s Detroit’s Curtis Granderson. But how many times must I tell you about Player A, the Giants’ Fred Lewis?

Did I ever tell you guys how much I love Timmy?
I think when this game is over he and I should get an apt together.
I am Cameron Wood and this is my son and business partner CW Culberson.
That was a fun game.
Aurilia’s homer pretty much shut the Cubs fans up. One of them started going, “Look at the standings! Look at the standings!” And we were just like, “Uh, dude? We’re rebuilding and we were expecting to have the worst record in baseball. Third place is fantastic.” And then we started chanting “Nineteen-Oh-Eight” and they shut up for pretty much the rest of the game.
Matt Cain: He'll save children, but not the Dodger children.
I was in the CF bleachers with a friend and this one Cubs fan was telling me to sit down because “I don’t want to look at Lincecum all day.” Me wearing my Tim shirt. I told him that Tim was going all nine so he’d better get used to it. He told me I didn’t know what I was talking about and that he knew more than I did. I told him that I’m a sportswriter so I knew more than He did, and suddenly he got friendly. I think he was trying to flirt with me, actually. I just wanted him to STFU.
Before I went to the game I made my radio debut: http://www.blogtalkradio.com/FantasyBaseballMafia/2008/07/03/Tony-Cincotta-brings-you-Fantasy-Baseball-Live- I’m dead-assed tired but I have to think that making a radio appearance and then smacking down Cubs fans and watching Tim pitch his butt off is a pretty gamer day.

I’m going to have to listen to that tomorrow, I’m a bit out of it at the moment though.
What section were you in? My $4 omg tickets were in 141, I think. There was a guy near me who was screaming at Jim Edmonds the whole game, which I appreciated, but after the twentieth time he screamed “YOU’RE A BUM, JIM EDMONDS!” I was wishing he had some other material.
Matt Cain: He'll save children, but not the Dodger children.
We were in 143, fourth row. Like the last row before the really close seats in the CF bleachers. There was a guy sitting right next to me also yelling at Jim Edmonds. And a Dodger fan almost got thrown out in our section and he wasn’t even being a dick. Well, side from baeing a Dodgers fan.
One of my friends said I sound like Pam Beesley, in the tone of my voice and speaking manner.

Just heard the interview
You sound EXACLTY like Pam…. nice call by your friend
there were a few talking about Omar. the usually …. weight vs avg etc. Then Omar started getting on base. It was funny, talk about the quiet zone developing behind me. Or they root on the their guys on.. “Come on Soto”....and we would add “strike out” All in all it was a friendly banter in the stands.
