Marlins Looking for Arms/Backstop
Given our past relations with Florida, could there be trade possibilities here? Don't know enough about their minor league system, but you gotta believe Molina and a decent reliever could get us something decent in return for our troubles. Maybe a AA or decent Triple A bat? Not clear that any other National League East team is in the market for what Florida is looking for, so the opportunity to drive up the price may not be there.

Can we do Yabu for McPherson. McPherson is the 3b we should have signed in the offseason. In AAA he is hitting .307/.421/.697 with 28 HR. He still strikes out a ton but I will take a SO as opposed to another GIDP from Castillo.

I saw Dallas play here in Albuquerque and he is fun to watch, much more enjoyable than Castillo has been.

McPherson is doing about as well as is humanly possible in AAA. I’d love to pick him up right now and give him half a season to earn next year’s starting job. In 360 ML AB’s, he’s got a 755 OPS, he’s healthy and 27. He should be starting somewhere right now. I nominate the team that is actually trotting Jose Castillo out there every day…

Dallas McPherson
I saw McPherson play last month as well, and he really looked good. I’d definitely trade something for him, I’m just not sure what Florida would want.

I do believe Sabean has said he’s not moving Molina. But regardless of whether or not he’s said it, I think we all know Sabes isn’t going to move him, come hell or high water.

I hate to be very negative but how do we know those results were from the "organic" Notgardo or the "fortified" Notgardo?

"Molina isn't going anywhere"...
...are you referring to trade prospects, or are you watching video of him running the bases?

I know this is way far-fetched, but what about a package around Sanchez and Molina for Uggla? I doubt they would do it, but I can have my dreams/hallucinations.

yeah, see the way these fantasy trades work is you dupe another team into giving up on its future for the sake of its present… sorta like what Sabean has been doing for years (until about midway through 2007… i’ll give credit where it’s due). duping a team into giving up its present for its present is much harder to do :p

I'd give them Sanchez, Yabu and Molina
for Maybin, Gaby Sanchez, Joe Nelson, and McPherson.
If that proved too much, I’d simply take Maybin, McPherson, Mobley and Nelson for that same package.
It’s unlikely the fish part with Maybin, but if they wanted Sanchez, that would be the sticking point

Maybin just got traded for half of Miguel Cabrera
You would be lucky to get Maybin, alone, for all three of those guys.

not quite
The Marlins also got 2 other really good prospects in Andrew Miller and Mike Rabelo. And also the Tigers got D-Train.
by boonitez on Jul 3, 2008 11:23 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I said "half of"
The other half being Andrew Miller…
Rabelo is hardly a “really good prospect.” He’s 28 and has a sub-.700 OPS. He’s a roster-filler backup catcher. Also, the Tigers gave away 3 pitchers (Trahern, De La Cruz and someone else) in the trade; I’m assuming those were for Willis.
In any event: Maybin is a top 10 prospect in all of baseball, and Neifi is suggesting that he be traded, with other players, for an overpaid, slow, aging catcher with a year and a half on his contract, an ancient reliever who signed a minor league deal this offseason, and a youngish #3 starter. If I’m the Marlins, I give that trade an “epic fail.”

Why
In the world would Florida part with Maybin for anything less than a superstar?

by Anticon23 on Jul 3, 2008 11:41 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I'm not saying they would
In fact, I believe I said “it is unlikely the fish part with Maybin” but that’s the only player worth trading Sanchez for.
In that same breath, let’s call the DET trade what it is: Maybin, Miller, and Rabelo were all traded to the Marlins for 2 years of Miguel Cabrera and 2 years of Dontrelle WIllis.
Miguel Cabrera is certainly miles above Jonathan Sanchez, but we are trading 4.5 years of Sanchez, 1.5 years of Molina, and .5 years of Yabu. Collectively, that total production might not match 2 years of Cabrera, but it certainly has a decent chance (especailly if Sanchez keeps improving). In the end, I don’t think Florida will trade Maybin, but this does provide great depth for the Fish and Sanchez might have more market value than we give him credit for
The other guys I mention in these trades (possibly with the exception of Sanchez, who I even said isn’t necessary) hold no major value at all conceivably. Nelson is a 34 year old journeyman, McPherson seemingly has no role with the Marlins, and Mobley is just a decent minor league closer who projects to be a decent reliever at best.

Just glancing over their affiliates, I don’t see much in the way of bats in the high minors. In AA they’ve got CF Cameron Maybin (but I don’t imagine they’re in a hurry to deal the centerpiece of the Cabrera/Willis trade) and 2B Chris Coghlan. Their AAA roster looks to be even more stacked with 30-somethings than the Grizzlies.

Alfonzo and yabu for Mcpeherson
Elizer Alfonzo is a serviceable catcher for a year and yabu could help in the short term so the Marlins who don’t really need mcpherson so they may be willing to give him up cheap

Marlins have slim pickings among positional prospects. I don’t see them as a good trading partner for SF.

I don’t think that Sabean is going to trade for a player who he actively refused to sign in the offseason.

Bengie Molina might be traded one day but it won’t be to the Marlins. He makes way too much money for their joke of a payroll, and the only way you get him there is to eat his contract. And why the hell would the Giants eat the contract of their cleanup hitter to trade him?? If the Giants ever look to trade him, (probably at next year’s deadline) they would expect the other team to pick up the freight.
