The Prediction Thread
Dear Diary,
Giants' baseball hasn't been that fun, lately. I mean, I still really like baseball and I still really like the Giants, but I don't like Giants' baseball. Oh there's some aspects of Giants' baseball that I like. Lincecum, for some reason. Matt Cain and Jonathan Sanchez too. Wilson, Hinshaw, Romo and Matos. Bowker and Lewis (even with Bowker's horrible July). Those guys represent various shades of flash that briefly illuminate the darkness.
But overall, it hasn't been fun. We haven't had cable for a while and usually I would be going crazy if I missed this many games. I love watching baseball. But this season, I have been able to handle it. I think it has to do with the enormous suck of the Giants.
So, I just thought it'd be nice to escape into alternate realities that will likely never come to pass.
Predictions are fun. It is fun to go back and see the ridiculousness that is flung around. Good examples of this are the community projections of various Giants' players. So here, any and all predictions are fair game.
How many losses for the Giants in '08? '09? '37? Will Barry ever play again? When will Bumgarner be up? How many Cy Youngs for Lincecum?
They don't even have to be baseball related. Obama or McCain? Third party darkhorse? Who wins the gold in fencing? How many mutations for the Olympic rowing teams from Beijing waters?
Since I started this thread, I should give some predictions myself. So.
-Bowker will hit more than 20 homeruns this year (risky, this one, what with his recent struggles)
-Freddie Lewis will never hit more than 20 homeruns (not so risky, this one)
-Freddie Lewis will have one season with an OBP over .400
-Bumgarner up in 2010, which is the same year the Giants finally have a good manager (I'm not up to predicting who)
-The next good Giants team in 2010.
-Villalona up in 2012.
-Fairley never makes it to the majors :(
-The Red Sox win the world series again this year :(
-The Rays win the world series next year
-Giants get the 3rd pick in the draft next year.
-Sandoval becomes a regular next year and wins rookie of the year (my bold pick)
-Molina ends up falling off a cliff, production-wise, and gets a bad attitude to boot, putting him squarely in Sabean's dog-house. This leads to a dump-him move ala Livan, Benitez, Morris, Pierzynski, etc.
-Matt Cain wins more than 10 games next year.
-Sanchez gets roughed up the next couple of starts and the Giants finally shut him down for the year.
-Correia finishes the year making gradual strides and then has a good year next year.
-Henry Sosa has a healthy season next year.
-thehavenot makes way too many predictions and most people don't bother to try and scroll down to the reply buttons, so no one replies.
So those are mine. They are all mostly serious. I probably could come up with some more. But I should save some for later. Plus less reading of mine means more predicting by you! Let's see what your inner eight-ball says about the future!

Don't forget...
Noah Lowry. He returns in 08 maintaining his ~4.00 ERA as the Giants 4th starter with Zito bumped to the 5th spot.
Giants will lose more games in 2009 than in 2008. Respectability flashes on the horizon in 2010, and by 2012 we’ll be one of the strongest teams in the NL with a ludicrous rotation of Timmy, Cain, Dirty, Bumgarner, and Lowry. Brian Wilson is shipped somewhere else, Alderson takes over the closer role, and Zito becomes the leagues best long relief man. Definitely.
league's best long relief man?
or league’s highest paid long relief man?
Um, no, not what I said. Just having Lowry as a 5th starter will make our rotation ridiculous, given the fact that the front four will be K-ing 200 a year. And they’ll be allowed to, because Zito will be throwing up perfect 7th and 8th innings. Duh.

To be honest
I’ve just put Noah Lowry out of my mind. Anything at all from him in the future would represent a pleasant surprise.
Just one more instance of us here at the MCC clamoring for something to happen (trading Lowry), and when it didn’t happen the Giants regretted not having done so.
Only 868 games until the end of Zito's contract
I remember Sabes saying that . . .
they put Lowry on the market, but were amazed by how little they were offered.
I guess there aren’t as many dumb GMs as there used to be.
you can't block the Bocock
McCain wins.
Goes off the deep end , decides to engage “the dirty Hun”.
Various backing governments come into play , bright white light.
None of this matters anymore.

Ivan Ochoa - Heir to the legacy of Rob Andrews & Rikkert Faneyte!

What you need an Abra. It can be a bit of a bitch to catch one at first, but then you can teach it flash and use it to illuminate the darkness anytime you want.
My Dave Righetti is better than your Dave Righetti.
Ok, I Will Play.
I only have two.
1) Barry Bonds will be aquited in his trial in March.
2) Barry Bonds will DH for the A’s next year and hit 38 HRs to lead them back to the playoffs.
I'm gonna bust you up...

Some bold random predictions:
-Villanola won’t be the savior of the franchise
-Alderson will end up a better pitcher than Bumgarner
-Lincecum will win at least one Cy Young within 4 years
-Pablo will be the real deal in the bigs
-McCain squeaks by, ala Bush vs. Gore, winning electorate but not popular vote
-Favre will unretire

I refuse to be drawn into a political discussion...
...but I agree with all your baseball predictions. And with havenot’s sad prediction of Wendell Fairley.
Your 2011 SF Giants: the 2008 Augusta Greenjackets!
Not to be picky
But hasn’t your last one already happened?
Only 867 games until the end of Zito's contract
In the sense it can’t be reached by a warship, yes.

The Sandoval/Posey controversy lingers for at least 2 years and 437,980 posts
Eddy Martinez Esteve comes to the bigs with a team other than us. Knocks around for a few years
We hire Athletics managers/coaches/execs to help us win with young pitching, then we win a pennant by 2013
Ivan Ochoa becomes a productive regular for another team for several years
Manny Burriss makes no bigger an impact than Desi Wilson
adopter/sponsor of "Go, Antoan" Richardson
Here's one
This team sucks next year. Bochy is still the manager, and we still see some combo of Winn/Molina/Castillo every day.

- The Yankees will not make the playoffs this year or next year.
- Kevin Frandsen starts at least 82 games at 2nd base for the Giants next year.
- McCain drops at least one racial slur before November.
- Posey up in 2010
I’ll give you a prediction: It’s gonna be cold, it’s gonna be grey, and it’s gonna last you for the rest of your life.
Trent Kline: Decentish. Also, my website is called ChatterBalks Dot Com and on it I make jokes about things.

I wouldn't say Bowker has been horrible this month...
He is what he is. He has no business being an everyday player especially at 1B (not his fault, he was not developed there) where his defense is atrocious. He’s a 4th OF and LH bat off the bench on a good team. He’ll never have an OBP above .320 as a regular. He chases high fastballs and breaking stuff in the dirt constantly. That being said, he hits a ton of line-drives when he gets a fastball in the zone, and his average is only .260 when his LD% is much higher, so I would not be surprised to see him end up at .280 this year. However, if we don’t sign Tiexiera, which I think we have to do based on the way Sabean has put this organization together, I wouldn’t mind him at 1B next year if he can improve the D.
Interesting analysis
Based on little fact. Defense atrocious? Based on what?
Never be an every day player? Based on 267 ML Ab’s in which he has managed to maintain a 87 OPS+ ?
I’m glad you can evaluate talent so easily. Makes everything so much easier.

From what I've seen
I actually do watch every game and that is my evaluation of Bowker. I apologize that it offended you. However, there is nothing in his minor league history or his brief major league history to indicate that he could be a legitimate corner player on a winning team. His .303 OBP and 15-63 W-K ratio would be one basis for my analysis. His career high in walks in the Minors was 41, he had to repeat high A and his career walk-to-K rate of 131-356 does not bode well. His .850 ZR (18th) isn’t bad at all at 1B but his fielding % is last and he’s caused other errors by his inability to dig. But I said he could get better there as he’s never played there before which shows a lack of organizational foresight given our free agent signings and the presence of Lewis and Schierholtz. John Bowker, a cheap serviceable short-term option at 1B if his defense improves on one of the worst teams in baseball. On a contending team, he’s a bench player with plus power.
I disagree
Perhaps Bowker won’t turn out to be anything. I think he will. He’s been unlucky and I believe that it has caused him to swing at those pitches out of the zone. He’s pressing. This has caused him to have a very bad July. He’ll get it turned around.
Only 867 games until the end of Zito's contract
I hope I'm wrong, but
When Zito’s contract is finally up, it will be universally viewed as one of the worst financial investments in baseball history.
wow
you really went out on a limb for that one, didn’t you? ;)

Some crazy predictions
Some things just are unpredictable. Had you predicted some things that have recently happened a year or two ago, you would have been ridiculed to shame. For instance, who would have believed that Rick Ankiel would make it to the majors as a center fielder? Or that the Cardinals would be doing pretty good with Ankiel and Ryan Ludwig as centerpieces of their offense? Or that Josh Hamilton would be an MVP candidate this year (prior to last year but after the drug problems)?
So here are my crazy predictions
-Kevin Correia becomes an ace-level pitcher.
-The Giants win the NL west next year behind their rotation of Lincecum, Cain, Sanchez, ace-level Correia and their fantastic bullpen
-Naughty by Nature makes a comeback and has a top ten single in 2009.
-The Dark Knight gets nominated for best picture
