TEIXEIRA TO THE ANGELS
Just got word that Mark Teixeira is heading to the Angels for Casey Kotchman and minor league pitching prospect Steven Marek.Link
This should make the Angels a force to be reckoned with, giving them a decent power hitter alongside Vladimir Guerrero. They have everything to win the World Series now: Speed, Power, Starting Pitching, Relief Pitching, and a good coach. Teixeira gives them power, average, a little bit of speed, and a good fielder.

So the D-Backs just lost out on Tex,
even after they were willing to part with Conor Jackson or even Micah Owings to get him, or both?

Why did you “even Micah Ownings” like he’s better than Conor Jackson?
by kingofthacove on Jul 29, 2008 3:47 PM PDT up reply actions
Not my intent,
just commenting that some of the media and bloggers elsewhere said that the D-Backs were willing to part with Jackson, or a Owings/Tracy combo to get Tex. Owings is pretty good himself, although not as good as Jackson.

All I heard was that they were not willing to part with Jackson.

In a vacuum, I think this deal is fine for the Braves – 3 years of Kotchman for 2 months of Teixeira is not bad.
But when you look at it in the overall picture of how they gave up a crapload of talent for Tex and ended up going absolutely nowhere with him and ended up with Kotchman, it’s pretty bad.
Matt Cain: He'll save children, but not the Dodger children.
I don’t know … they gave it a shot, it didn’t work, and instead of trying to prove they were right all along, they made the best of it.
Well
That is the risk you take sometimes. Had the Braves been able to go deep in the playoffs this year or last, things would look different.

funny
People can keep perspective for gambling on trades like that for other teams, but if the Giants traded away 5 or 6 top prospects for a 2 year rental of Mark Teixeira and never made the playoffs, I doubt they’d get the same treatment.
You are right
But I would not be in that camp.
I still say the AJ trade, in it’s context, wasn’t that bad.

The difference is that AJ sucked and was non-tendered. Teixeira was at least good while he was there, and even netted a few players on his way out to cushion the blow.
Yes but no one reasonably expected that result out of Aj.

Actually
AJ was about as good as Molina if not better. Why people blow Molina, yet hate AJ is quite hilarious to me. Probably because we traded talent to get AJ.
I think part of the reason is that Molina replaced Mike Limp-Bat Matheny.
Gosh, why didn’t we just stick with the dirt-cheap Yorvit in the first place and avoided all of this?
I think part of the reason is that Benjie seems infinitely more likable to both fans and teammates.

I don’t really get all the Molina love either, tbf.
Matt Cain: He'll save children, but not the Dodger children.
he tries his hardest
and produces pretty well for a catcher as good as he is. He calls an excellent game, has a pretty decent arm, and can hit some too. He definitely earns his paycheck. Well…at least a little more than some other ‘gamers’ around here.
it also seemed the Front office was ready to “done” with A.J. be the All Star break. If you put that much into the pot at least have the courage of your freaken convictions and stick with it a bit. That’s the part the disgusts me.
If A.J. had been over 30 I am pretty sure they would have had of patience with him.

So, what do you guys think?
Will the Giants make a deal with the Marlins for Molina, and we end up with Mike Jacobs?

Good trade for Atl, but I agree with Jponry, that with all they gave up to get Tex a few years ago, it doesn’t look as good.
I don’t think this is that great of a move for Anaheim. Losing Kotchman will hurt. He was getting hot, and was the catalyst for their big inning against the Red Sox last night with his 2 run HR off Dice K that helped blow the game open. I have a hard time believing the Angels couldn’t have traded some prospects or other players to get Tex and keep Kotchman. But in true Angels fashion they are holding tight to their prospects, most of whom seem to flame out anyway….
Would you still feel this way if the Angels end up signing Tex to a long-term extension? Also, where does Kotchman play if the Angels had hung onto him?
One
of them could have DH’d. Anything to get Gary Matthews Jr out of the lineup would have to be seen as a positive.
1. Figgins 3b
2. Kotchman DH/1B
3. Vlad RF
4. Teixeira 1b/DH
5. Hunter CF
6. Anderson LF
7. Kendrick 2b
8. Napoli/Mathis C
9. Izturis SS
And you could even platoon Rivera and Willits in the OF to give Vlad and Anderson days off. And even god forbid Matthews Jr.
Maybe we can finally get Vlad!

As somebody who wasn’t really in on the scene at the time, how close were the Giants to getting Vlad?
The Dodgers have him sealed and delivered
but with the LA ownership change the Angels swept in and signed Guerrero
This is particularly interesting because i could see the Angels being the type of team that might be willing to shell out the dough to keep him this offseason. Vlad isn’t getting any younger after all and the Angels could use a new young offensive centerpiece.

Agreed,
Moreno could shell out the big money to keep him, now that it has cost him Kotchman.

Dear Mark Texiera,
Now that you’ve seen that the Rangers and Braves will move you around like a piece of luggage (sign with the Giants) and that the Angels will have you for only about two months (sign with the Giants), please go into the off season with an (sign with the Giants) open mind. There are lots of teams out there (sign with the Giants) that could use your services. Thank you for your (sign with the Giants) time. Sincerely,

I’m pretty torn on signing Tex. He’ll cost a lot of money, cost us a 2nd round draft pick, and we will get him during his 30’s in a pitcher’s park. But he is a legit superstar at a position of weakness for us.
I feel like I could be talked into or out of it pretty easily.
Im going to start swearing at people every time I seem them say "pitchers park"
According to BR, the park factor for ATT is 100.
That is neutral.
Get over it!

Oh yeah
The money for Tex wouldn’t bother me – it would be the years.

by FairweatherFan on Jul 29, 2008 4:40 PM PDT up reply actions
Pitcher's Park
Has that stat been neutral for more than a year or two? I know that it used to be sub-100 in all categories for at least the first five years of the place.

- Jim Baker, ESPN.com, May 2002
he's a switch hitter
his power wouldn’t take that much of a beating from the right side at least. He also hits for a hearty average and still drives in a lot of runs.
Do Not Want
Teixeira to sign here. Boras is his agent. And not the friendly Jeff Boras, but Scott. Teixeira’s going to want a ridiculous amount of money and I’m sure he will get it too. Sorry, but I don’t really want to pay a guy 120 to 165 mill to not even be among the top 5 at his position. I’d much rather let Baltimore or the Yankees make that mistake.
it wouldnt be a mistake
if the yanks shelled out that kind of money.. just if we did
proud father of the newly acquired Brandon Crawford..
wtf are you smoking
name one first baseman who is clearly better than Teixeira. And also, we have a shitload of money on our payroll not being spent. The money wouldn’t be much of a problem.
haha i knew i was forgetting someone
but okay name 4 more.
Yeah, Pujols is really the only obvious one. M. Cabrera, and Howard have comparable offensive track-records but are defensive butchers.
he's kinda like ryan howard
all he does is hit homers. not enough rbi’s and kind of a crappy BA.
I’d take Berkman, Adrian Gonzalez (he plays great D too and has good pop, RBI ability, prob hit for better AVG if he had real protection too), Morneau, Youkilis (also plays great D), Fielder, Cabrera and Howard all have the track records that I would take them over Teixiera too because they have more power potential.
But you wouldn’t want to sign most of them through their mid-30’s. Teixeira is unique in that he is not as reliant on old-player skills as the rest of those.
Also, Youkilis? Really?
I agree maybe with Berkman and Morneau, but not Gonzalez, Howard, Cabrera, Fielder, and especially not Youklis. Gonzalez is really good, but he’s not at all better than Teixeira. Teixeira drives in more runs and hits for close to the same average. Fielder hits a boatload of homers but hits for no average nor does he drive many runs in. Cabrera hasn’t been that great this year, so you can’t say he’s better than Teixeira either. Howard also hits a boatload of homers, but again, that’s all he can do. It also doesn’t hurt to mention that he plays in Philadelphia, which has a tiny park that makes hitting homers much easier. And also the Phillies lineup is friggin loaded. That helps his RBI totals quite a bit. And as for Youklis…come on, seriously. And also keep in mind that he’s not even 30 yet, so he still has time to get even better.
You say that Teixiera is good because he drives in more runs, but that Howard isn’t as good because he drives in a lot of runs?
no I'm saying Howard drives in a boatload of runs
because he’s in a lineup with a bunch of good hitters ahead of him. Teixeira had Chipper Jones infront of him, but that’s it. And also Jones was benched for some of the time. And also Howard bats for a crappy average. He’d look pretty bad if he was playing in a pitcher’s park.
According to BP’s Runs Above Position (found here), this year Teixeira has been the 5th best 1B in baseball, after Pujols, Berkman, Morneau and Adrian Gonzalez.
Bowker is a -9.4, by the way. He’s barely above replacement level for a first baseman, at the moment (1.4 Runs Above Replacement Player) :(
Matt Cain: He'll save children, but not the Dodger children.
Well, yeah - so ?
He is a replacement player, in case you haven’t noticed.
I think Bowker will have a big season next season.

Matt Cain: He'll save children, but not the Dodger children.
In terms of ML 1b?
No, he hasn’t been very good.
In terms of 24 year old rookie converted right fielder (who came strait from AA)? He’s been fucking astounding.
