TEIXEIRA TO THE ANGELS
Just got word that Mark Teixeira is heading to the Angels for Casey Kotchman and minor league pitching prospect Steven Marek.Link
This should make the Angels a force to be reckoned with, giving them a decent power hitter alongside Vladimir Guerrero. They have everything to win the World Series now: Speed, Power, Starting Pitching, Relief Pitching, and a good coach. Teixeira gives them power, average, a little bit of speed, and a good fielder.

So the D-Backs just lost out on Tex,
even after they were willing to part with Conor Jackson or even Micah Owings to get him, or both?

There’s no way the Dbacks were willing to give up Jackson or the deal would have gotten done. (And it would have been one of the worst trades of all time.)

Not my intent,
just commenting that some of the media and bloggers elsewhere said that the D-Backs were willing to part with Jackson, or a Owings/Tracy combo to get Tex. Owings is pretty good himself, although not as good as Jackson.

In a vacuum, I think this deal is fine for the Braves – 3 years of Kotchman for 2 months of Teixeira is not bad.
But when you look at it in the overall picture of how they gave up a crapload of talent for Tex and ended up going absolutely nowhere with him and ended up with Kotchman, it’s pretty bad.

People can keep perspective for gambling on trades like that for other teams, but if the Giants traded away 5 or 6 top prospects for a 2 year rental of Mark Teixeira and never made the playoffs, I doubt they’d get the same treatment.

The difference is that AJ sucked and was non-tendered. Teixeira was at least good while he was there, and even netted a few players on his way out to cushion the blow.

it also seemed the Front office was ready to “done” with A.J. be the All Star break. If you put that much into the pot at least have the courage of your freaken convictions and stick with it a bit. That’s the part the disgusts me.
If A.J. had been over 30 I am pretty sure they would have had of patience with him.

Good trade for Atl, but I agree with Jponry, that with all they gave up to get Tex a few years ago, it doesn’t look as good.
I don’t think this is that great of a move for Anaheim. Losing Kotchman will hurt. He was getting hot, and was the catalyst for their big inning against the Red Sox last night with his 2 run HR off Dice K that helped blow the game open. I have a hard time believing the Angels couldn’t have traded some prospects or other players to get Tex and keep Kotchman. But in true Angels fashion they are holding tight to their prospects, most of whom seem to flame out anyway….
by Hobbes2d on Jul 29, 2008 3:40 PM PDT 0 recs
Would you still feel this way if the Angels end up signing Tex to a long-term extension? Also, where does Kotchman play if the Angels had hung onto him?

One
of them could have DH’d. Anything to get Gary Matthews Jr out of the lineup would have to be seen as a positive.
1. Figgins 3b
2. Kotchman DH/1B
3. Vlad RF
4. Teixeira 1b/DH
5. Hunter CF
6. Anderson LF
7. Kendrick 2b
8. Napoli/Mathis C
9. Izturis SS
And you could even platoon Rivera and Willits in the OF to give Vlad and Anderson days off. And even god forbid Matthews Jr.

This is particularly interesting because i could see the Angels being the type of team that might be willing to shell out the dough to keep him this offseason. Vlad isn’t getting any younger after all and the Angels could use a new young offensive centerpiece.

Dear Mark Texiera,
Now that you’ve seen that the Rangers and Braves will move you around like a piece of luggage (sign with the Giants) and that the Angels will have you for only about two months (sign with the Giants), please go into the off season with an (sign with the Giants) open mind. There are lots of teams out there (sign with the Giants) that could use your services. Thank you for your (sign with the Giants) time. Sincerely,

I’m pretty torn on signing Tex. He’ll cost a lot of money, cost us a 2nd round draft pick, and we will get him during his 30’s in a pitcher’s park. But he is a legit superstar at a position of weakness for us.
I feel like I could be talked into or out of it pretty easily.

Has that stat been neutral for more than a year or two? I know that it used to be sub-100 in all categories for at least the first five years of the place.

Do Not Want
Teixeira to sign here. Boras is his agent. And not the friendly Jeff Boras, but Scott. Teixeira’s going to want a ridiculous amount of money and I’m sure he will get it too. Sorry, but I don’t really want to pay a guy 120 to 165 mill to not even be among the top 5 at his position. I’d much rather let Baltimore or the Yankees make that mistake.

I’d take Berkman, Adrian Gonzalez (he plays great D too and has good pop, RBI ability, prob hit for better AVG if he had real protection too), Morneau, Youkilis (also plays great D), Fielder, Cabrera and Howard all have the track records that I would take them over Teixiera too because they have more power potential.
