Jinxes

So first I'd like to take the opportunity to apologize to everyone in Giants land for taking a couple of trips in the last few weeks.  The first was getting married and going on our honeymoon up to Tahoe the first part of July during which the Giants lost 6 in a row and more recently, the trip south to visit in-laws where the Giants were swept and The Enchanter didn't get his win.  Going on trips, it seems, is not good for the Giants' record.

Anyways, thinking about this (over a diablo shrimp burrito and a couple beers) made me curious about what activities you all do that just guarantee a Giants loss.  Or on the brighter side: a win!  (like Grant's undefeated record whilst watching from a luxury box).

So let's have a good old fashioned shooting of the breeze for baseball superstition.

Wild tales and farfetched yarns encouraged.

And don't mention that no hitter.

I was like 2-18 on Orange Fridays. I stopped going because clearly it wasn’t working for me.

My son's first season of his life, 2006, the Giants were 13-6 when he attended

And THREE of those losses were blown saves by Armando Blownitez. So, the Heir of Mayor SHOULD have been 16-3. Next year, my son is arbitration eligible, so I figure Blownitez hurt his chances at the big payday.

I’m 3-1 this year, and the only loss was the Lincecum balk game, so I’d say my presence helps the team when the umpires don’t intervene.

Radio on Sundays

This year I have been spending some Sunday afternoons working around the house, and so have been unable to sit and watch the games. So i have been listening on the radio, which has been a complete 0-fer for me including the game Cain-er started vs. the White Sox, last weeks game vs. the Brewers and today vs. the D-backs..

Today I vowed to stop this practice. When I need to do yardwork, or any other kind of work and cannot watch the game I will record it and watch it later.

by toofruss on Jul 27, 2008 10:35 PM PDT reply actions

Which, if you just take a peak at the box score before you watch it… might save you a whole lot of time!
When I miss a game I’ll sometimes scan through the game day thread for excitement and fast forward the dvr accordingly.

by Merope on Jul 28, 2008 8:19 AM PDT up reply actions

I have scanned the gameday thread after watching just to see what the reactions were to some things. But pre-scanning the box scores is certainly defeating the purpose of recording.

I have participated in the gameday threads a few times lately, and am 1-2 so I am seriously considering stopping that as well.

A new superstition I developed this season

If I eat the same lunch as the one from the previous day, I break up the good mojo during a win streak. Don’t dispute it. It’s science.

I have a few superstitions, none of which work. I realized this year I was being an idiot, so I don’t do them anymore.
1. Sit in the same spot when they’re doing well. If I move, I think it will cost them.
2. I always watch the game with a Giant t shirt on. If they win, I wear the same one the next night. I change if they lose.
3. if the game is on Direct TV, I think it’s good luck to watch on channel 696, which is the Giants’ home channel, rather than the same feed in the Direct TV grouping, even though the grouping is better because you can simply go up and down with the remote to watch other games during commercials.
4. If I’m going to the game, the Giants never win when I wear my favorite jersey, and if I wear it and they lose, I feel like it’s my fault.

Hmm.. I’ve been to 3 Giants games this year… and I’m 3-0! lucky me=)
Went to a Lincecum game vs. the cards, where bowker hit his 2nd homerun.. Sanchez game vs. the Mets, and Zito’s game vs the Nationals (so many homeruns that game.. was totally “wtf”).. rawrrawr wish i could find time to go to more! Maybe I’ll get to see one of those famous Giants losses =/

I don’t have any Giants win/lose superstitions, but I do force myself to go take a 15-20 minute run/jog when they win.. just my lame little attempt at staying in shape for the summer. luckily for me, I don’t have to go that often.

If my head is full of white hairs by the end of this season.. I blame Brian Wilson. (I'm only 22, dammit!)

I’m 2-2 this year. I went to Washington and saw Lincecum and Sanchez wipe out the Nationals 11-1 and 6-0. Then I had to spoil it by going to Shea and having the Mets shut us out twice.

The Fiji Win Factor

I went on a surf trip to Fiji in 2007. While I was there I met a very famous director from LA and he was wearing a Dodgers cap. We got into it a little bit, but with no internet or TV we couldn’t watch any games or get scores. On the last day we had a layover at a fancy hotel on the main island, I got on the internet to check some scores. To my surprise the Giants had won every game that week and were in first place. I think they swept the Dodgers even. I dished it out to my new friend every chance I got that day.

Then I got home and they lost like 9 straight, and I watched every one of those games.

So in short, the Giants should pay for me to go surf in Fiji all summer every summer. We’d be way over .500 right now and I’d have a great bottom turn.

ill be at the game tuesday night in LA… i plan on getting drunk enough to crack some of my knuckles as well, too bad we’re not going the same night. i also plan on gettign extra drunk cause it will be my 22nd birthday…. in which cause im hoping the Giants and Matt Cain give me a much deserved win. so far im 2-2 at games ive attended this year. 1-1 in SF. and 1-1 in LA.

No matter what I do, they keep losing. Unless there’s some kind of fluke and they win. I haven’t noticed a pattern.

What an absolutely laughable theory...

now I have noticed that when I wear this Orange Fridays t-shirt I got at one of those away games @ AT&T, they always lose. EXCEPT when I don’t watch the game! Then they just usually lose.

not Giants related, but..

It’s been 12 years since I last saw the Red Sox lose at Fenway Park. I’ve been there 12 times and they’ve won every time. I even had tickets once, decided not to go at the last second to hang out with my little cousins (4 and 2), and they lost that day. I have the juju.
