Was it really that bad? I just saw the box score, and it neither surprised nor crushed me.
My Dave Righetti is better than your Dave Righetti.

yes it was really that bad
Your starting pitcher tosses 13 strikeouts… and you still lose? Ugh

To be honest, I think Bochy’s reasoning for taking him out was more than fair. He was at 111 pitches to begin with and he had thrown 120+ in his last game. It didn’t turn out well, but I’m not going to get on Bochy’s ass for taking him out.
Now, his lack of recognition about the kind of pitcher Tyler Walker is … that, I will >:( at him about.

yeah, but as I said elsewhere… against the Brewers Lincecum was coming off the flu and he just didn’t look like he felt well. Last night Lincecum was in command. Big difference in situations.
And I agree we need to not burn his arm out, first full season in the bigs etc etc…
What gripes me is Bochy’s lack of perception, a lack of grasp of the situation, and that would include leaving Thighler in when he clearly didn’t have it.

Still, when he’s already thrown 120 pitches in a situation like that one start ago, holding him at 111 is just fine in my book. I agree that Bochy has no clue about context and situation (in a perfect world, he would have taken Tim out after the 6th in his last start and then left him in to start the 8th last night, but oh well.)
And honestly Walker is too big of a liability to be the regular set up guy. It seems like half the time, he’s got nothing. It’s almost like you have to always have someone else warming up with him.

Agreed. I’m generally in favor of taking a starter out a little too early rather than too late. If it were a pennant race, I’d feel differently.

reminds me of cain's 2-hit loss to the padres
in that it made me so nauseous of this team i refused to watch the next game.
this, however, was something else…with Cain i could blame the whole offense.
tim’s effort was so amazing, and then to see it go up in flames so ridiculously quickly because of, really, Bochy and Walker.
can anyone with some time/resources come up with Tyler Walker’s numbers when he enters a game Cain/Lincecum pitched, vs. anyone else? Because i’m quite positive he has something against those two guys.
by ExcuseMeSwing on Jul 27, 2008 10:43 AM PDT 0 recs
It's a shame...
I wasn’t able to watch it. But also I would disagree that Barry Zito was never worth a 7 year contract. In his first seven years in the majors he would be worth it. Of course that’s the 7 years the A’s had him and not the Giants.

Is there a McCoveyChronicles exclusive RSS Feed? I see there is a SBN all inclusive RSS Feed but I don’t care about the other sites unless the Giants are playing them (besides Minor League Ball and Beyond the Box Score).

For me, the worst loss of the season came back in April against St. Louis. Matt Cain took a no-hitter into the 7th inning, hit a home run, Bowker debuted and also hit a homer, the Giants staged a dramatic 9th inning comeback – and for all that, the Giants managed to lose 8-7 in 10 innings. That one also featured a massive Tyler Walker meltdown.
Of course, I’m biased, having been at that game.
by jcb9 on Jul 27, 2008 11:17 AM PDT 0 recs
I think the difference is Matt Cain vs Tim Lincecum.
For Cain we’re used to his games being blown. Tim Lincecum we haven’t gotten used to the fact yet.

It’s funny – most any season, I go through a patch of a week or so when I’m just burnt out on baseball and don’t watch at all. As lousy as this season has been, that hasn’t yet happened this year. I think that’s a statement on how low my expectations have become than anything else.

Tyler Walker
Fastball straight as an arrow, good slider and split when he can get around his weight and get them down. Tough on righties with those pitches. Lefties kill him (.340/1.114). Average middle reliever especially if he can face mostly righties in an inning. No business being a set-up man. Why Bochy and Sabean still think this guy is a legitimate set-up man is beyond me. I can’t take another Walker melt-down although last night was nothing compared to the 7-3 lead I watched him blow against Houston or the 3-run lead he blew against St. Louis.
by mark30perq3 on Jul 27, 2008 11:50 AM PDT 0 recs
Who do we want as our set-up man?
I’m pretty done with the Polar Bear.
I’m thinking Taschner when the 8th inning features mostly LH and Romo when it’s mostly RH.

Taschner being watched:
The Tigers have had a scout in San Francisco this weekend watching the Giants against the Diamondbacks. It’s believed that the target of observation is lefty reliever Jack Taschner, whom the Giants could potentially deal. The Tigers have been linked with relief help in trade rumors this week, but with back-to-back losses to the White Sox dropping Detroit further back in the AL Central, any momentum towards the Tigers being buyers might have halted.
Adopted Giant Brian Wilson: One of the few reasons to watch this year.

Walker either has it, or he doesn't. I can see it, you can see it - I could write a computer program to see it in about 2 lines of code.
Why can’t Bochy see it? If he get’s behind the first batter and does not immediately recover, he doesn’t have it. Yank him.

I think Walker is especially Bi-Polar
He is either great, or he gives up 3 runs.
A lot of guys will struggle and maybe give up a run, or figure it out halfway through the inning, But Walker either gets everyone out or totally blows it.
And it is apparent from the first batter he faces if he has his good stuff that day.
