We lost her :(
So I posted a few days ago that our puppy Abbybell was at the vet with a bad case of parvo. We recieved a call this morning that Abby had past away sometime last night, this has been a horrible time for us. Even though we only had her for a short time she touched our lives so much, we loved her like she was our child because she was all we had. She was doing so well at potty training and we were so exited to start puppy kindergarten next month, but we lost her. Again thank you all so much for your prayers, warm wishes, and caring thoughts! You did truly help with your positive comments and I truly appreciate it. I doubt highly that there are better, more considerate fans in all the world than us Giants fans! By the way what was up with dirty last night, I didnt get to watch the game.

This is so sad. I’m sorry to hear that she’s gone. But she had a loving family even for a short amount of time. That’s more than many pets have.

Sorry about your loss, we lost our family cat a few weeks ago that we had for 15 years. Pets really do become members of a family after awhile.

Just lost my first pet, a cat, a month ago. He was almost fifteen.
You did everything you could. Life is fragile and sometimes these things happen. I am truly sorry for your loss.

Well said
My condolences to you and your wife, jbowl.
I think Baron made an important point, though—your time with that puppy was probably the highlight of her life. I hope you can find some comfort in that.

I am so very sorry for your loss
I don’t know what I would’ve done if my dog would’ve been in the same situation. Thank you for providing such good care and a loving family for your pup. I know that she appreciated it while she was with us.
im sorry

Sorry for your family's loss, as well as for xanthan's and positiveeuph's, and all other lost friends we hear about on this thread.
It’s a painful loss, I know. The only good thing about the pain of the loss of our friends is: THEY ARE WORTH IT. I wouldn’t trade the avoidance of the pain for missing out on their lives.

Yup
this was for sure one of the hardest things i have gone through, but I am so happy I got to enjoy her for the time she was around. Holding her and just having her sleep on my lap was so awesome, and fun. The biggest consoling us is that we know she isnt suffering anymore, and that makes us feel a little better about it.
I'm young but i didn't fall off the truck yesterday!
So sorry
So sorry to hear about Abbybell. Losing a pet is worse than losing the World Series.

My condolences jbowl
I know exactly how you feel…
A few years back, we had to say “good bye” to Cocoa (my favorite pet ever) our 14 year old chocolate lab. It was one of the most difficult things that I’ve ever had to do. She was just too sick and too old to do anything about her health. After too many weeks of watching her deteriorate, we finally decided it was time to bring her in to the vets for her final visit.
Our pets have always been considered our furry children. As such, we didn’t come to this decision lightly. It wasn’t a financial decision. This was about doing what was best for Cocoa.
We still had our Beagle Sandi, so after a few weeks we began talking about getting her a new playmate. We figured that this would help all of us get through this sad time. Little did we realize…
Not long after that, we went to a big adoption event and found the cutest little pup (She looked like a cross between a Rot and a Golden Retriever). I began to fall in love with her before we even got her home. We named her Layla (I’ve always loved that song).

"Layla… Like a fool, I fell in love with you,
Turned my whole world upside down."
Everything went well for about a week; then she began to get sick. It turned out that she had Parvo. We treated her very aggressively, and after about a week it seemed that she was kicking Parvo’s ass. She continued to improve for about a week, and then began getting sicker (with some slightly different symptoms). We took her back to the vets and discovered that she also had Distemper – which is a much more serious and deadly disease. We tried to save her, but after a month of anguish, we lost Layla.
I can’t tell you how difficult it was to lose both Cocoa and Layla in the same month and a half…
Oh jeez that’s so awful. A few months ago my cranky old Siamese cat was losing weight and the first words out of the vet’s mouth was “thyroid” and I nearly lost my shit just thinking about him passing. He’s fine, and we determined what it was making him lose weight. He just needed softer food because of his old poor teeth. He can’t eat what he can’t chew.
I know he won’t live forever but it hurts so much to think about losing him, as well as his younger sister. They really become part of the family.

WARNING! (About Parvo)
Before you get another puppy:
The natural (and healthy) thing to do, after losing a pet, is to begin looking for a replacement. However, the Parvo virus is very difficult to remove from your yard. Some experts say that it can survive for up to 7 or 8 years outside. There isn’t a universal agreement on this, but I can tell you it will live at least a year.
After we lost Layla we thoroughly cleaned our house and yard. I sprayed a bleach solution several times over our entire back yard. Just to be safe, we decided to wait a year before getting another puppy. As it turns out, that wasn’t long enough. Our new pup Luna also contracted the disease. Luckily, we caught it early enough and she survived.
If caught early and treated aggressively Parvo is often successfully treated. However, I have the following recommendations to anyone that has had a dog with Parvo:
1. Do not adopt a puppy younger than 6 months old, and make sure that they have had all of their shots.2. If you choose to ignore my first recommendation, have a supply of Parvaid on hand. (We used it with Luna, along with the vet’s treatments, and she survived). I would recommend giving this to any puppy that you bring into your Parvo infected environment. Don’t wait for symptoms develop. (This product is completely safe) Bring your pup to the vets the moment that they develop any symptoms. The sooner they are treated the greater their chance of survival.
