minor lines, 7/24/08
AAA: Fresno lost to Round Rock 16-1
Fresno: SS Jake Wald: 2 for 4, 2B
Round Rock: 3 for 4, 2 HR, BB
Fresno: RHP Victor Santos: 3.2 IP, 9 H, 12 R, 12 ER, 3 BB, 2 K--4 HR
Fresno: RHP Scott Munter: 2.1 IP, 2 H, 1 R
Wald was the lone Grizzly with two hits, accounting for two of their seven hits as he raised his own PCL AVG to .277. The Astros' 27-year-old Majewski, the one-time prospect for the Orioles, had 2 HRs.
Santos's ERA took a beating, ballooning to 4.89. He pitched a scoreless 1st inning before six runs in the 2nd inning and five runs in the 4th inning, with another run in between in the 3rd inning. Munter improved his ERA to 2.79.
AA: Connecticut's doubleheader at Portland was postponed by rain
(the first game of the double-header was to complete the previous day's game, which was suspended in the 4th inning)
A+: San Jose defeated Bakersfield 5-1
San Jose: RF Mike McBryde: 2 for 4, SO
San Jose: SS Sharlon Schoop: 1 for 2, 2B, BB
San Jose: RHP Tim Alderson: 5.0 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 3 BB, 3 K--1 HB
McBryde was the only Giant with two hits, raising his AVG to .290. Schoop, who drew their only walk, was the only other Giant to reach base twice., but his OPS remains below .650.
Alderson improved his W-L record to 11-3 with a 3.16 ERA. The three walks was the most walks he had issued in any start since May, but the three hits was also the fewest number of hits he had allowed since the end of May.
A-: Augusta had a scheduled off-day
(Their next scheduled off-day is August 6th, which will be their next to last scheduled off-day of the season.)
ssA: Salem-Keizer defeated Spokane 1-0 (10 innings)
Salem-Keizer: SS Ryan Lormand: 1 for 4, 2B, BB, SO, E
Salem-Keizer: LHP Scott Barnes: 4.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 8 K--1 E
Salem-Keizer: RHP Edwin Quirarte: 2.0 IP, 1 K
Lormand was one of three Volcanoes to reach base twice. His 7th double of the season was just his second hit in the fourth game of this series after he had several multi-hit games to conclude the previous series.
Barnes' first pro start, which came after four relief apperances, was a very impressive one. He faced just two batters more than the minimum, and struck out over half the batters he faced. So far in his pro career he has a 2.00 K/IP in 11.0 IP. After his second straight two-inning appearance, Quirarte has peripheral stats of 9 H, 4 BB and 12 K in 14.1 IP.
R: Giants defeated Brewers: 4-3
Scottsdale: CF Wendell Fairley: 0 for 2, 2 BB, HBP
Scottsdale: 3B Josh Mazzola: 1 for 3, HR, BB, SO

Maryvale: RHP Jake: Odorizzi: 4.0 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 2 K--1 HR
Hernandez had his first start without issuing a walk, but he also allowed a career high 7 H. His ERA is now an even 6.00. In two perfect innings in his eighth relief appearance, Grabham had a new career high with 4 K.
Mazzolo connected for his 5th HR. In his 25th game, Fairley had the first multi-walk line of his young career. Odorizzi, whom the Brewers' selected 32nd overall in this year's draft, has made two of his four starts against the Giants. This was his first start pitching past the 3rd inning.
DSL: Giants defeated Cubs 10-8
Dominican: 2B Cesar Osuna: 2 for 3, HR, 2B, BB, HBP
Dominican: 1B Victor Santana: 3 for 5, HR, GiDP
Dominican: RHP Miguel Ferrer: 6.0 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 1 K

Alderson is really holding his own in A+. Do you think the Giants will leave him there all year? I wonder if we’ll see him as a September callup at the end of ‘09.

I would like to see both Alderson and Bumgarner sent up a level. Probably Sosa too.

Depends on playoffs
Given how incredibly young both are for their level, they’ll probably stay put since both Augusta and San Jose should make their leagues’ respective playoffs.
I also heard Bobby Evans on a podcast recently say that the Giants like to leave new/young prospects (new draftees, foreign signings…) at the same level for an entire year so they have less distractions and can acclimate to pro ball in a new city/area. Makes sense IMO.

I agree with/like everything in this comment.

Hec(tor) yeah! Dude’s hitting pretty well in the DSL so far. Plus Hector is an awesome name and I would name my kid that if I was having any.

I’m sure they have a plan, know what they’re doing, and know much more than I do. I just prefer to challenge the really talented guys.

Agree
While I like that the Giants have made some promotions during this season, I agree that Alderson and MadBum should probably stay in their respective leagues for the entire year given their ages. I imagine the jump from A+ ball to AA is a bit tougher then from low A to A+. Ben Snyder has taken a while gitting adjusted. Since both pitchers are having significant success while in the process of working on developing their pitches and their delivery it is probably best to leave them at one level so they have consistency in dealing with their coaches.
Fairly knows how to take a hit (HBP) – good for him in figuring out how to get on base even when he isn’t getting hits. Perhaps he needs to share this secret with Noonan.

Fairley
I wonder if he has Bocock’s approach to taking pitches- close your eyes and hope the pitch is called ball. that might also explain the hit by pitches. The high HBP, has me worried he can’t identify when to jump back – or his swing is so long/deliberate he can’t bail out.

It is rookie league, so pitchers may not have great control. Maybe fairley just crowds the plate or chooses to be hit rather than duck out of the way.

...they’re obviously getting ready to bring him up to the majors and give him one at-bat per week.

Downs got hurt
I listened to part of that game. A ground ball took a bad hop on him and bounced off his arm, drawing blood. It didn’t sound particularly serious.

Is Schierholtz already gone for the Olympics? I didn’t see his name in the boxscore last night.

Could be that Begg is in his late 20s and still hasn’t done anything above AA.
