Minor League Game results in Serious Injury, Fan Attacked, & Criminal Charges...One Ejection?
This isn't a Giants-related post, but I thought I'd put this subject out here.
In a game between the Peoria Chiefs (Cubs) and Dayton Dragons (Reds), Peoria's Julio Castillo, a 20-year old pitcher, was at the center of it all.

In the top of the first, a Peoria hitter was hit by a pitch, but in the bottom half, Castillo walked the first batter he faced and plunked the second one (Zachary Cozart). Cozart had to leave the game. After getting an out, an infield hit past the pitcher towards second base loaded the bases, but Castillo collided with his second baseman Glan Guzman and Guzman left the game with a broken leg.
After that unfortunate incident, Dayton got two hits to knock in four runs, and Casillo plunked the next hitter, Angel Cabrera. The batter hit a ground out, and an angry Castill0 barreled into Peoria shortstop Nate Sampson.
That led Peoria's manager Carmelo Martinez to come out and engage Dayton's manager Donnie Scott in an argument on the field, where Scott was coaching third. When the two manager made contact, Castillo suddenly fired the ball at the Dragons' dugout. He missed, and the ball hit a fan, who was hospitalized.
That pretty much set that up. Dragons left fielder Brandon Menchaca, who was on deck, tackled Castillo from behind, and fights broke out all over the field.
15 ejections were immediately issued, but all but one were reinstated since the result would've been pitchers filling in on the field for the rest of the game. Only Castillo stayed ejected, and he was arrested and will be arraigned on Friday on a felony assault charge. Of course, the Midwest League is likely to hand down multiple suspensions after reviewing this incident.
This incident may be one of the ugliest incidents to occur in baseball in recent memory, if not ever. The only event that comes to mind is the Cubs-Dodgers game that resulted in players going into the stands, but that one at least was instigated by fans to a degree. Castillo's using the ball as a weapon in the direction of fans is inexcusable.
Just thought I'd put this one out for your consideration and discussion.

So wrong and yet so funny.

wtf
Managers arguing, even. I can’t ever recall where I’ve seen that. Felony assault charge for that errant throw is bad enough. I don’t take issue when the players brawl in sports because it’s their own asses if they do. Someone tell Castillo that if he’s mad and if he has to be violent, go punch a dude on the other team. Don’t throw a ball at the guy, at the dugout, or anyone else.

Sure. At least you won’t be arrested for assault.

Or a wall … or a water cooler… or something. Seriously though how would you like to stand in the box the next few times he throws in side? And if you an umpire how do you not have a REAL short leash on this guy for a while.

Also, easy for me to say, but after watching the video I thought the umpires did a really lousy job of separating the managers.

That video shows the Dragons coming out of the dugout during the argument between the managers, so I guess that’s prompting the pitcher’s throw towards them (maybe not into the dugout itself, but at one of the players)...still not making it right.
I agree with the fan on the video: that pitcher needs to be out of baseball.

I hope nobody gets hurt, but I’d like to see our Castillo do something stupid like that and get himself suspended. It might be the only way to keep him out of the number two hole in our lineup every day.

I can't believe this shit
usually I love watching brawls, think they’re great, but this is horrible. I mean, you never ever ever ever use the ball as a weapon. I think that Coolbaugh incident should have taught us that lesson. It was really really bad that he threw the ball at all – could have killed somebody, and the fact that it went into the stands is even worse. This guy should be banned for life.

I know nothing about this Castillo dude, but whatever’s left of whatever signing bonus he received will now be the property of the fan he drilled. If he’s not reinstated, about three years indentured servitude sounds about right. “Julio, get me another beer…and don’t even think about throwing it at me.”
