Hank Blalock?

MLB Trade Rumors says the Giants have interest in 27 year old Rangers 3B Hank Blalock.  I say why not if they'll take Winn/Taschner/PTBNL (which I'm willing to bet is a little bit of a pipe dream).

Is it really that hard to think of 75 words to say about Hank Blalock? Why not make some mention of his stats this year or perhaps some grousing about his home/road splits or his injury problems.

I'd like me some Hank Blalock...

He’s the kind of low risk-high reward player that we should be taking in. He takes up a bit of our payroll, but that’s okay because our payroll’s gonna be tiny next year. If he can stay healthy, he could turn into a productive hitter again. And his salary should make it hard for Texas to demand anything much in return.

by boonitez on Jul 23, 2008 4:38 PM PDT   0 recs

How high is the reward, though? He’ll be 29 next year, he’s got a career line of .274/.337/.462 in a bigtime hitter’s park, no speed, not much of a fielder at third, substantial injury history … He’s a lot more likely to be a placeholder than a long-term solution.

by Evan on Jul 23, 2008 4:41 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

That's fine.

MLB 08 has it's flaws

For example have you ever noticed that Fred Lewis is WHITE on that game. Of all the people on the Giant’s Fred is the farthest from being white.

ugh… i’ll give the standard “if he comes cheap” response. he should be entering his prime, and in limited time this year and last he’s been good. i don’t know much about his defense, but a career 799 OPS in Texas doesn’t excite me. however comma another year of castillo scares the crap out of me. so, a cheap stopgap? yes, please.

I will take him if they are giving him away as a salray dump

I wouldn’t even be crazy about taking on the contract and I sure as hell wouldn’t give up anything of value for him. Maybe the Giants can get them to take Roberts and pay like 1/4 of his salary with the Giants paying the other 3/4 or so.

by FluLikeSymptoms on Jul 23, 2008 4:49 PM PDT   0 recs

Blalock sucks. He’s not good defensively. Has no speed. He can’t hit lefties. He can’t hit on the road. He’s not even hitting well at home over the past 4 years or so. He hasn’t been good for awhile now and likely won’t ever be good again.

DO NOT WANT.

BLASPHEMY

Hear me out. We all agree that we want Aurilia, Winn, and Roberts gone, not necessarily in that order. Since we could accomplish those things, and he can replace Castle at third, why not do it? It would be a little more watchable this year, gets rid of vets, and doesn’t kill our plans for next year. Maybe something like Aurilia, Winn, Taschner would work, or take one of Aurilia/Winn out and put another pitcher who isn’t important in there, since Texas needs pitching.

by giants9107 on Jul 23, 2008 5:17 PM PDT   0 recs

How many left-handed hitters do we want on this team?

It seems like almost every worthwhile Giants hitting prospect in or near the majors is a lefty.

Considering the team’s home park, that strikes me as a recipe for disaster. Adding another guy, particularly one as questionable as Blalock, and at a traditional right-handed power position… pass.

but his contract has a $6.2 million club option w/$250,000 buyout, so we’d be trading for one year at $6.2 million for a guy who hasn’t be healthy in 3 years.

Anyone who wants him is not seeing his Road stats

He is horrible outside of one of the best hitting parks in the majors, worse than Pedro Feliz.

Why anyone would want him is beyond me, particular if it would cost us someone valuable, like the relievers listed above in one post, and since he would cost us $6.2M. If you are going to waste money like that, give me that money!

But that package will def not get it done. They are set in the outfield, especially if they resign Milton. I don’t think he’ll be worth what they are asking.

Blalock is not a good idea. I’d rather not pursue an injury prone third baseman that can’t hit lefties or outside of the Arlington.

I’m not convinced Blalock is an improvement over the melange at 3B for 08/09. His road splits indicate poor performance at the Phone Booth. His lefty bat doesn’t fit the Giants lineup or park. His last full year (2006, 150 games) .266/.325/.401/.726 look a little too Castillo-y for me (2008, .260/.313/.412/.725). Last year he had sample size problems, a good week in May and a hot end to the season (after missing June, July and August).

Roberts for Blalock – sure. DL for DL. But Winn/Tasch/PTBNL? This isn’t for Blalock of three years ago – its for a player who has now displayed some significant flaws and for a short term rental. As a free agent signing – depending on terms, it also might be okay. He is a nearly case of high risk/high reward – I can see the people salivating at the 900 OPS at 3rd base – Giants’ problems solved! I’d rather the package return a 24 year old stymied/blocked 3b at AA/AAA.

Castillo hits doubles.

by kennv on Jul 24, 2008 7:27 AM PDT   0 recs

Nah. But if TX buys him out and he becomes FA we can offer him a minor league contract and invite him to SP next Feb.

We SHOULD however go aggressively for Crede this off season. I say 3 years $30m with incentives and performance metric based options. Hell we can even throw in the locker next to Rowand’s.

And another thing..

This would also stick it nicely to the CWS since our first rounder next June should be protected anyway. I’m still pissed about getting swept, and by what they did to old Comisky Park.

by toofruss on Jul 24, 2008 9:38 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

What’s all this Crede noise lately? He’s still over 30, he still has a bad back, he still can’t get his OBP over .325, he still has his stats inflated by his home ballpark. We should keep looking for a player who’s actually good.

by Evan on Jul 24, 2008 10:45 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

108 OPS+ in 08. He is on 30+ HR pace, which as a right hander would probably not drop off that much here in SF. He is not “over 30” as much as he “is 30”, but given that I would only go three years at that rate, and make the options based upon performance. (I know that is not Sabien’s style, but hey I’m just saying what I would do.)

What are we paying Bengie to hit clean-up? Would Crede be an upgrade? Would 3 years get us to Gillespie?

by toofruss on Jul 24, 2008 11:02 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

This "Crede Nonsense"

Is because he is the most realistic upgrade at 3b this side of the 3 year horizon.

There is no one in the MiL who will perform at 3b, and there are few other FA options. Either we make a move for Crede, or we have Castillo until the farm system can produce someone.

Crede is in budget, will make this team better, and will not block anyone nor hurt the development of this team.

And he is 30, the same age as Aaron Rowand. Not over 30.

Eugeniooooooo!!!!

by FairweatherFan on Jul 24, 2008 11:21 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Yeah, i’m not interested in Crede, he’s not very good & wil cost too much. Paying a lot of money for average players is the path of failure as we’ve proven so brilliantly in recent years.

It wouldn’t make any difference, there’s no chance Crede will be a type A free agent (as it’s based on the previous 2 seasons) so whoever aquires him won’t have to give up a draft pick regardless.

sure it does, in a you get what you pay for kind of way. If I pay a kid $5 to mow my yard I expect a lot less than if I pay a landscaping company $150 a week to take care of it. Hell, Southwest has made a profitable airline out of lowering customers expectations, then meeting that level.

For some reason I don’t think lowering expectations and meeting the level is an acceptable approach for a sports team.

I agree with you, it’s not the best way to run a baseball team, but there is almost always a spot for a player like Castillo. I don’t care for him either, but as a last minute Kevin Frandsen replacement, he’s been allright. Is is flawed? Certainly. Has he been the worst player on the team? Not even close. If the Giants’ magically summon a 2B and a 1B with huge power (I know, fantasy land) then you can live with a guy putting up Castillo’s numbers at 3B.
