Around SBN: Auto Racer Jeffrey Earnhardt Excited to Make MMA Debut

What would you say if I were...

to tell you I know of a 26 year old minor league left handed hitting 1B (who can play the OF), who is on pace to hit over 20 HR's for 3 out of the last 4 years?  What would you say if you knew he was at AAA Fresno, and hitting .304?  What would you say if I told you he was the son of a former MLB Player?  I give you the prospect in question...BRETT HARPER!

Now who does BH gotta dry hump to get a call up?

Is Harper a distant cousin of Scott McClain? I feel they share more similarities than just playing together.

he's got a .350 OBP which you'd think combined with high HR totals

would me he’d have a shot at a spot on the roster.

Crushing your dreams, one STATS post a time....

Actually, his MLE’s looked better than I expected, but they still aren’t that great for a 1B. Bowker is a much better option.

Harper’s MLEs

.292/.311/.463

90 games, 257 AB’s, 29 R, 75 H, 20 2B, 0 3B, 8 HR, 31 RBI, 7 BB, 45 K, 1 HBP, 0 SB, 1 CS, 0 SH, 2 SF

Holy crap, 20 points of isolated OBP is TERRIBLE. He’d have to be just about a .300 hitter just to kind of have reasonable value.

Having seen him in the Eastern League, Brett Harper is almost completely incapable of playing any defensive position other than a weak 1B.

This year’s numbers make it look like he’s terrible against lefties, but his career splits don’t look all bad. Purely for a bat off the bench, he might be an option, but his best fit is probably as a DH.

And who is now an employee of the Giants (roving instructor?)

by MILB Watcher on Jul 21, 2008 10:28 PM PDT up reply actions

Nitpicking the details

Brian Harper was actually a pretty crappy outfielder, compiling less than 400 AB’s in the majors for 5 different teams over the first 11 years of his pro career. However, that was all before 1988, when he came to the Twins organization and turned himself back into a catcher (the position where he’d been originally drafted) at their AAA affiliate, at the age of 28, and completely turned around his career.

He came up to the defending world champion Twins at midseason and almost immediately became their everyday catcher. Over the next 5 1/2 seasons, he’d start at catcher 120+ games every year (including their world champion team in 1991), never hit under. 294, and put up OPS+ of 113, 119, 106, 111, 108, and 107. He wasn’t the greatest defensive catcher, and he wasn’t an All-Star, but he could hit better than most catchers, so he found a way to be a solid contributing player for a competitive club. Come to think of it, maybe Brett should try on the chest protector.

Now now…as an expert on the subject, another way to cure hangovers is to drink more! No, I’m not talking about the ol’ hair of the dog routine. I’m saying that if you build your tolerance wayyyyyyyyyy up there like a certain guy I know…you’ll never get hangovers. Of course you’ll be dropping some serious cash on a bar tab…but I’d much rather do that than feel like crap the day after.

Omar...I'm done with you. Hello Darren Ford! Come to papa.

Not to be k/j, but I believe that elevated tolerance and decreased unwanted effects caused by heavy drinking (no hangovers) are actually potential symptoms for alcoholism.

Hey, I said potential. There are FAR more useful symptoms. I guess it’s kind of like the Relief Pitching ERA of symptoms.

Small ppl like me need to watch it with the drinking a lot or we’ll wake up and see our livers next to us having a cup of coffee one morning.
