Wait, what did Bochy do now? I missed the game yesterday.

Also, I could have sworn your last item read “Think Duscherer and Street will get married?”

by Evan on Jul 21, 2008 9:01 AM PDT reply actions

Lincecum was at 100+ pitches after struggling through six and really not having his best stuff. He was in trouble all day. But he ended up giving up only 2 runs, despite all that.

So, of course Bochy brings him out for the seventh. He hits the first batter on a pitch that missed badly and Bochy left him in. He gives up a hit on an 0-2 count to the next batter and Bochy left him in. He gives up a HR to Braun that everyone in the Gameday thread could see coming on a 3-2 count, so he ends up throwing over 120 pitches and giving up 5 runs in 6+ innings for absolutely no reason.

Then of course Hinshaw comes in and shuts down the next three batters in order.

It was just very irritating.

Argh. Glad I missed that. It’s especially egregious with Lincecum coming off the flu.

by Evan on Jul 21, 2008 9:17 AM PDT up reply actions

I was at the game, it was pretty bad. I know Bochy isn’t satisfied unless Timmy throws 100 pitches, but I kept thinking since he was getting over the flu, and with his struggles earlier in the game, he would be done after 6. When the bullpen stayed empty, I just had a sinking feeling. They always seem to leave him in half an inning too long.

Especially bad after Bochy made a publis statement saying they would probably be limiting Lincecum (particularly pitch count) because of his flu-like experience, and especially bad because Lincecum had thrown over 90 pitches in 4 innings, and Bochy actually had a warm arm ready to go.

The only kinds of statements that Bochy makes are pubis statements. That’s why some of us used to like him so much. Unfortunately, the face that he shows in pubis doesn’t measure up to what he actually does in practice.

And don’t get me started on the stuff he does in his privates time.

Who cares about the A’s?? Beane gave up on the season before it even started, and the mass exodus has finally affected the team. They’ll be 20 games under .500 before long. As for Bochy, I agree with all your sentiments. Not only the Lincecum thing, but he made the Wilson mistake in a non save situation once again. By the way, I blame Wilson for this too. I know most closers seem to have this problem in non save situations, but Wilson has taken it to a new level. Who the fuck does he think he is, Mariano Rivera?? He’s too good and too important to try hard in a non save situation?? It’s beneath his greatness?? As for trading him, everytime you say it, I’m going to still say no freaking way. There’s no other closer options in the organization, and veterans closers as good as him are now making eight digits per season.

Every time the A’s trade a couple of their stars, everyone says they’ll be 20 games under .500 before long, and yet they keep having winning seasons.

If Wilson really does have problems with nonsave situations, then he needs to get tf over it, and that’s exactly what a hopeless season like this is for. No reason to keep him in his comfort zone.

That’s funny. I blame ONLY Wilson for this. A stud reliever should be able to go out and shut down the opposition no matter what the situation. Doesn’t matter if it’s the 5th or the 9th or the 13th. I predict a serious regression in the second half for Mr. Wilson.

Yes, this site really has been balky lately. Firefox [on Mac] crashes repeatedly, images don’t load, or the thing just grinds and grinds away never loading the page.

The Benitez fiasco is still too fresh in my mind to say “Dump Wilson, and we’ll take our chances elsewhere”. At least when Wilson blows it you can think “He’s still young, maybe he’ll learn.” No such excuse or hope for Armando

As far as the A’s are concerned… I think the A’s management is just giving up and saving money until the new stadium opens. I like baseball on the radio at night. Here in Sac, I can listen to the Giants or the Padres [1090AM] The A’s don’t exist here [on the radio] despite the fact that the AAA team is here in town!

As others here have written

The real test of this Giants organization (both manager and FO) is what team they’re going to send out on the field every night after the trading deadline. If they’re playing Winn, Aurilia, Viz, Roberts etc. for the next couple weeks to try to get someone, anyone to take them in exchange for prospects or just as a salary dump, I can live with that. If those guys are still starting come August 1, then the whole youth movement argument is just a crock.

Also, how many innings is Lincecum up to 135 innings on the season. If they want to limit him to 200 innings, that means he only has 9 or 10 starts left, which probably means they need to shut him down two or three weeks before the season ends.

No, my Crazy Crab bobblehead is not for sale.

Another tidbit

Fred Lewis has a bunion and now Bochy has an excuse to play Roberts when he returns:

Fred Lewis sat Sunday with continuing pain from a bunion. Manager Bruce Bochy acknowledged the team has discussed surgery, but that is considered a last resort because recovery can take eight months. The injury might accelerate Dave Roberts’ activation from his minor-league rehab stint, perhaps as soon as Tuesday.

“This is going to be with Freddie for the rest of the year,” Bochy said. “He’s going to need his time off. That’s where Roberts can help.”

Poor Freddie, that does not sound like fun.

Adopted Giant Brian Wilson: One of the few reasons to watch this year.

Frowny face

Yeah surgery would mean messing with the bones in the foot and that would be really difficult to deal with and recover from.

Bunions are no joke

I thought 8 months seemed absurd for a bunion recovery, and then I realized that I didn’t really know what a bunion was, other than what they look like as a cheap visual punchline in movies. I looked at WebMD.com, and damn, that stuff is not funny. It’s a growth of bone that results in other deformities in the region, not just like a cyst or something. Wow. I don’t see how this gets any better without surgery.

Great

Just what we need. I was enjoying watching Fred develop and now we have to suffer through Roberts playing half the time the rest of the season? These injuries almost seem like they’re convenient to allow Bochy to play the veterans.

If Lewis needs surgery for these and it takes 8 months to recover, they should shut him down at the end of August, have him get the surgery, then be ready to play by April or May of next season. Sucks, but better than the alternatives.

No, my Crazy Crab bobblehead is not for sale.

by Kitspool on Jul 21, 2008 12:09 PM PDT up reply actions

if surgery is the only way this gets better, then yeah, they should have him do it know and come back next year. let roberts play this season and trade him in December.

Trading Aurilia
Aurilia could be moved. When asked about the possibility of following Durham out the door, Aurilia said, “I don’t have an option. He did. Those decisions aren’t made by me. This has nothing to do with what I want or don’t want.”

Aurilia has said that it’s nice to be back in SF, and it has to feel good moving up various records within an organization, like he’s doing this year. BUT, I’d bet he’d like to on a contender too. I wonder what he wants and what he knows about “those decisions” he can’t make.

I think Aurilia could be a more useful/valuable bench player than Ray. (Little) more pop, more PH experience, could conceivable play around the diamond as tertiary back-up, vet play-off experience. Hmm, maybe about equal.

Draft Update

I didn’t think i would make another draft thread so i will put this here, from one of the other boards
http://collegebaseball.rivals.com/content.asp?CID=828436
“3. C BUSTER POSEY (FLORIDA STATE)
The latest: When Posey was drafted by the Orioles in June, he made several statements to me alluding to the fact that he might return to school for his senior season. That, of course, was immediately after the College World Series. With much having changed since that point, Posey has gone from having an open mind about returning to school to being quoted in newspaper articles as if he’s already with the Giants. Though Posey hasn’t signed the dotted line, every indication has him signing with the Giants. Posey’s stock will never be higher and he’s already proven to be the nation’s best college player. Now it’s time to take that label to professional baseball.”

and

“9. 3B CONOR GILLASPIE (WICHITA STATE)
The latest: Gillaspie had a sensational junior campaign for the Shockers, and was drafted by the Giants in the supplemental first round. As with first-round pick Buster Posey, Gillaspie has yet to sign with the Giants. Still, that might not mean much. According to a source we spoke with at Wichita State, it would come as a huge surprise if Gillaspie decides to return to school for his senior season. After an outstanding season at the plate, Gillaspie’s stock is at an all-time high and probably can’t improve much. As a result, I’d expect to see Gillaspie sign before the August deadline.”
