Around SBN: Jeremy Lin's Game-Winner Was Incredible, Worth Remembering

Minor Lines 7/20/08

Fresno Grizzlies (AAA): Fresno 1, Salt Lake 0

Top Lines:
3B Scott McClain - 1-3, 1 R, 1 HR (18), 1 RBI, .306
RF Nate Schierholtz - 1-3, 1 2B (19), .312
1B Travis Ishikawa - 1-3, 1 2B (12), .293
LF Dave Roberts - 2-4, .393
DH Brian Horwitz - 1-2, 1 BB, 1 SO, .287
SP Nick Pereira - 4.1 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 SO, 5.70 ERA
RP Ryan Sadowski - 1.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 SO, 4.50 ERA, W (4-2)
RP Billy Sadler - 2.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 SO, 0.72 ERA, H (5)
RP Kevin Gryboski - 1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 SO, 4.66 ERA

Game Notes: Three and a half months into the season, Fresno finally got its first shutout of the season, but not without a little pain. Pereira didn't last long enough for the win, after leaving in the fifth inning after injuring his left ankle, although he was removed only for precautionary reasons. The bullpen, however, filled in admirably, allowing just one walk and retiring the other 14 they faced. Meanwhile, the team got six hits, but just one counted: McClain's 18th home run of the season to lead off the 5th inning.

Pereira's injury couldn't have come at a worse time for him, as he had allowed 31 earned runs over 34 1/3 innings since the start of June, and was in the midst of easily one of his best starts of the season. Sadler made his 9th straight scoreless outing, a span 14 2/3 innings. McClain's home run was his first hit since the All-Star Break, which began on July 14th. Schierholtz is 17 for 35 with five doubles and two home runs since coming back from injury on July 7th. Ishikawa is slugging .630 in Triple-A, including 5 home runs and 12 doubles in 26 games. Roberts' rehab continues, as he is now 11 for 28 over ten games. Horwitz is 1 for 5 since coming back from the majors.

Connecticut Defenders (AA): Connecticut 8, Binghamton 3

Top Lines:
1B Pablo Sandoval - 2-5, 1 R, 1 HR (4), 1 RBI, .330
SS David Maroul - 2-4, 2 R, 1 HR (8), 2 RBI, 1 SO, .223
C Adam Witter - 1-3, 1 R, 1 2B (12), 1 RBI, 2 BB, .236
RF Ben Copeland - 2-4, 1 R, 1 3B (12), 1 BB, 1 SB (21), .263
SP Ben Snyder - 4.0 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 3 BB, 3 SO, 1 HR, 7.66 ERA
RP Josh Sharpless - 1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 0 SO, 1 WP, 3.38 ERA, W (1-1)
RP Paul Oseguera - 1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 1 SO, 4.11 ERA, H (2)
RP Ronnie Ray - 1.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 SO, 3.29 ERA, H (3)
RP Kelvin Pichardo - 1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 SO, 2.38 ERA

Game Notes: The Defenders slugged out a couple of solo home runs, but dominated the Mets after coming off of a rained out game on Saturday. Sandoval had his fourth home run in Connecticut, and now is slugging .538 in the Eastern League. Maroul's eighth home run came in his 78th game, and was his first in July. Witter is now batting .328 with a .986 OPS in July. Copeland is batting .415 over his last ten games with three doubles, a triple and a home run.

Snyder has given up 19 earned runs in 22 1/3 innings in the Eastern League after five games. He has just 15 strikeouts and nine walks, after notching 73 strikeouts and 18 walks in 85 2/3 innings in San Jose. Sharpless has a 2.83 ERA over his last ten games. Oseguera has now made three relief appearances, all scoreless. Pichardo did not allow a baserunner after allowing six (two hits, four walks) in his last outing on 1 2/3 innings.

San Jose Giants (High-A): San Jose 5, Modesto 4

Top Lines:
3B Matt Downs - 2-4, 1 R, 1 2B (20), .300
SS Sharlon Schoop - 2-3, 1 2B (12), 1 RBI, 1 BB, .242
RF Mike Mooney - 1-3, 1 R, 1 2B (12), 1 BB, 1 SB (8).272
CF Mike McBryde - 2-5, 1 SO, .294
DH Dayton Buller - 2-4, 1 2B (3), 2 RBI, .308
SP Jesse English - 6.0 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, 4 SO, 1 HR, 1 HBP, 2.65 ERA, W (10-4)
RP Taylor Wilding - 2.0 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 3 SO, 1 HR, 1 WP, 3.98 ERA, H (4)
RP Joe Paterson - 1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 SO, 3.22 ERA

Game Notes: San Jose continued its rebound from a tough second half start by winning their second straight against first place Modesto. San Jose won this one with a three run rally in the sixth inning. Buller's two-RBI double in the inning highlighted it, though Schoop's RBI single added to it. Buller now has eight doubles over three levels over 38 games. Schoop is batting .313 over his last ten games, and has an RBI in each of the last four.

Downs is 4 for 9 since coming back from Fresno. McBryde is 9 for 18 over the last four games now, good for him especially now that his playing time may be threatened by Darren Ford, part of the Ray Durham trade. Mooney has four doubles and two home runs in his last nine games, and is slugging .529 in San Jose. English has given up 10 earned runs in his last 28 2/3 innings, slightly raising his ERA. Paterson came back from giving up four runs in his last outing.

Augusta GreenJackets (Low-A): Augusta 7, Lake County 2

Top Lines:
DH Angel Villalona - 1-4, 1 R, 1 2B (20), 1 RBI, 1 SO, .247
1B Thomas Neal - 1-4, 1 2B (19), 1 RBI, 2 SO, 2 E (8), .269
2B Skyler Stromsmoe - 1-3, 2 R, 1 BB, .213
SP Oliver Odle - 6.0 IP, 8 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 4 SO, 3.86 ERA, W (8-4)
RP Dan Turpen - 2.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 SO, 3.61 ERA, H (6)
RP Trey Webb - 1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 0 So, 0.00 ERA

Game Notes: Augusta won big despite getting just six hits, but five Lake County errors sure helped. The GreenJackets actually got just two RBI, one each by Villalona and Neal. The rest of the runs all came unearned. Villalona is batting .317, and bounced back after breaking a ten-game hitting streak. Neal is now hitting .308 for the month of July, his highest since starting the season by hitting .324 in April.

Odle has a 1.93 ERA in July, after having a 5.87 ERA in June. Turpen made his 36th appearance of the year in relief, and has a 1.53 ERA in his last ten games. Webb made his Augusta debut (as a pitcher, at least). He had a 4.91 ERA in the Arizona League and a 4.15 ERA in Salem-Keizer, pitching in three games in each level.

Salem-Keizer Volcanoes (Short-A): Salem-Kezier 14, Spokane 2

Top Lines:
1B Mike Loberg - 3-5, 3 R, 2 HR (3), 5 RBI, 2 SO, .308
2B Ryan Lormand - 4-5, 2 R, 1 2B (6), 1 HR (2), 4 RBI, .246
CF Caleb Curry - 1-2, 1 R, 2 RBI, 1 SO, .226
LF Casey Bond - 2-5, 1 R, 1 RBI, 1 SO, 1 CS (6), 1 PO, 1 HBP, .250
SP Ari Ronick - 5.0 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 6 SO, 2.49 ERA, W (2-0)
RP Michael Eifel - 2.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 SO, 2.65 ERA
RP Brian Irving - 1.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 SO, 5.91 ERA
RP Justin Fitzgerald - 1.0 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 1 SO, 9.00

Game Notes: The right side of the Volcanoes' infield did the heavy lifting for Salem-Keizer. Loberg, playing first base, had the first multi-home run game for Salem-Keizer this season, tripling his own season total and providing more than a fifth of his total RBI in this one game. Meanwhile, Lormand led both teams in hits, and has a double and home run in each of the last two games. Curry is batting .143 over his last ten games. Bond is batting just .162 over the last ten games himself, after breaking a three-game hitless streak.

Ronick came back from allowing four earned runs in 2/3 of an inning in his last start. Eifel has allowed just one run in his last five relief appearances. Irving had allowed four runs over his last two outings before this one, but still has 19 strikeouts and five walks in 10 2/3 innings. Fitzgerald made his second appearance in S-K after appearing in three games in the Arizona League.

AZL Giants (Rookie): Padres 9, Giants 2

Top Lines:
C Jesus Navarro - 3-3, .500
3B Josh Mazzola - 1-4, 1 R, 1 HR (3), 2 RBI, .240
LF Ben Woodbury - 2-4, .378
2B Dan Cook - 2-4, .258
SP Meroly Nova - 2.1 IP, 6 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 0 BB, 3 SO, 9.00 ERA, L (0-3)
RP Drew Bowlin - 2.2 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 2 BB, 3 SO, 13.50 ERA
RP Geomar Patino - 1.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 SO, 9.00 ERA

Game Notes: The Giants lost and are left with a split with the Padres over the past two days, going into a scheduled off-day. Navarro kept up his spectacular hitting, despite appearing in just nine games. He is 12 for 24, with three doubles and three walks against five strikeouts. Mazzola had the lone big hit and was responsible for both runs, and has hit all three of his home runs in the last nine games. Woodbury is now 6 for 9 over his last two games. Cook is now batting 17 for 66 in the Arizona League.

Nova didn't allow an earned run in his last start, the only one he had managed the feat for in his five starts, but overall has allowed 15 earned runs in 15 innings pitched. Bowlin made his first appearance in the Arizona League after five appearances in Salem-Keizer, where he had a 5.74 ERA. Patino made his second appearance, and currently has the same ERA in the AZL that he had last year in 11 games in the same league.

Sndyer...

one good outing out of five so far with CT ,is still looking for his groove. I’ve seen him pitch a couple of times and chart in the stands a couple of times and it seems like he’s the unhappiest person in the world.

I love loved Ben Snyder. What happened to Snyder?

Downs

I wonder why they didn’t send him to CT rather than back to San Jose.

based on his age he should still be at Fresno, not back in A ball. I think some of the decision makers in the Giants’ organization suffer from “Downs Syndrome.”

abject speculation on Nate Schierholtz

It seems to me that the only reason he wouldn’t make the Olympic teams is if the Giants didn’t make him available, so I am assuming (again, pure abject speculation) that they didn’t. It also seems to me that they wouldn’t hold him back from going to the Olympics unless they had a notion they might trade Randy Winn and thus call him up.

Do the rest of you speculate something similar or is my imagination running wild?

by FluLikeSymptoms on Jul 21, 2008 12:27 PM PDT reply actions

That’s my speculation on the subject.

"While conservatives tell you 'leave things alone and no one will lose,' and liberals tell you 'interfere a lot and no one will lose,' baseball says 'someone will lose.' Not only says it - but insists upon it! ... Democracy is lovely, but baseball's more mature." BVCE supports SF Dugout and Manny Burriss.

by BaronVonCurrentEvents on Jul 21, 2008 12:32 PM PDT up reply actions

Well there seems a flaw in that speculation

based on the fact that Espinelli was made available for the Olympic squad, placed on it and then called up. But really, reports after the Futures Game was that the Team USA officials who were there were very very very displeased with the US Squads efforts really pretty much from top to bottom (particularly given that the entire US squad was so much older and more experienced than the World Squad). Going into the Futures Game they felt that most of the Olympic squad was coming off that roster—after the game they were definitely intent on looking elsewhere. Nate played the whole day and didn’t distinguish himself one bit. Occam’s razor tells me there’s not much more to it.

by Roger on Jul 21, 2008 12:37 PM PDT up reply actions

as far as Espineli goes, I think when they made him available they actually intended to let him go, but they needed a replacement for Yabu and they liked him the best.

I have a hard time believing they would pass on Nate based on just one game. Although maybe it was a close decision and they wanted to give him every opportunity to standout in that game and he cost himself a spot when he didn’t. I still think chances are better the Giants held him back, but who the hell knows really.

by FluLikeSymptoms on Jul 21, 2008 12:54 PM PDT up reply actions

The whole discussion that the Giants don’t value him that highly?

It’s still kinda dumb that they based the whole shebang off one game. I say that meaning all the guys in consideration for the Olympic team. Would it be a good idea to assume because a guy went 4 for 4 that he’d be a lock for the team, conversely?

From what I’ve heard, especially from people who talked to Frank Robinson afterwards, he was really pissed off at the US players approach or lack thereof. Too many players who were experienced enough to know better going up to the plate without any apparent plan—especially going up against pitchers that most of them had never seen before. So if Nate put his 0-4 up against 4 pitchers he’d never faced and didn’t appear to try to see many pitches to guage the opponents stuff, I can see where that would get him in dutch with the man.

I see. I’d be upset about that too, were I in Robinson’s shoes.

Please do not let Darren Ford take away ANY of McBryde’s at bats while he is en fuego. TI continues to impress at AAA and hope to see him up before September. Maybe the bunion on Lewis foot can be a blessing for SF – have TI play 1b and Bowker play some LF.

I developed it from poor running form in high school. It ain’t that bad (most of the time). Lewis needs to buck up and get himself out there because Bochy doesn’t need to think twice if he has ANY excuse to play a vet over a kid.
