If you guys are really getting Hammond and Ford for a salary dump, it's a friggin' ripoff.
BCB's "very own marginally deserving all-star!"
You’re really upset about losing a fast 22 year old who can’t hit high-A pitching? And a generic soft tossing lefty?
Is the Milwaukee system worse than ours? Becuase it seems like we’ve got a couple versions of Hammond.
you can't block the Bocock
I'm not upset
But it’s an overpay. Durham is bench talent for us and expensive bench talent at that. Hammond is a durable lefty 4th starter that is under team control for 6 years, something that is much, much more valuable than a couple hundred at-bats from Ray Durham. Ford is just an added roll of the dice; I’m not even taking him into account.
BCB's "very own marginally deserving all-star!"
Also
considering your likely to lose both CC and Sheets via FA after this year, the Brewers probably could have used Hammond at the back of the rotation sometime in the near future.
Yeah, I'm not super excited about our rotation next year
I took a look at what pieces the Brewers had left and how they should use them to perhaps bolster next year’s rotation here.
BCB's "very own marginally deserving all-star!"
Perhaps, but it isn’t just a salary dump from the Brewers’ perspective. Rickie Weeks just isn’t getting it done, and Durham’s .385 OBP sure would help in chasing down the Cubs.
I would have been fine with Durham for Hammond; Ford is pretty useless.

Durham is also worse than Weeks defensively, by a significant margin
And, despite his lefty splits this year, he has righty splits over the much larger sample size of the years before that, so he’s not even a really great platoon option. It’s an overpay.
BCB's "very own marginally deserving all-star!"
There’s always a chance that getting Ford out of Space Coast Stadium, which is death to right-handed hitters, gives him a jump start. He’s got the tools and had good success at West Virginia last year. He’s probably nothing, but he could turn into a decent fourth outfielder if he just gets a bit better; his defense really is elite. Put it this way, I certainly wouldn’t have minded holding onto him.
BCB's "very own marginally deserving all-star!"
Good to know, but as soon as he gets to AA and Dodd Stadium, there goes any jump-start.
Well, the Giants will probably have a new AA affiliate by the time he gets there anyway.
Also, Durham is definitely worse than Weeks defensively, but that isn’t as much of a problem with the strikeout pitchers the Brewers have. You don’t need to platoon Durham at all. You can just leave him in there and have Weeks keep him rested. I assume that the Brewers are (for the most part) going to start Durham at 2B and bench Weeks, at least for this year.
by North Side Chicago Expatriate Giants Fan on Jul 20, 2008 12:54 PM PDT up reply actions
But the Brewers aren't acquiring Durham to supplant Weeks
He’s going to be used off the bench and as a backup plan if Weeks completely tanks.
BCB's "very own marginally deserving all-star!"
That’s a great use for him. Weeks has shown a propensity for slumps and injuries. Ray-ray is quite an upgrade over Craig Counsell’s bat.
you can't block the Bocock
I agree
I was happy with the deal when it was Ford for Durham. But Hammond (and Ford) for Durham is too much. Durham is just a tweak, and Melvin was JUST talking about not overpaying for tweaks. Oh well.
BCB's "very own marginally deserving all-star!"
That’s odd, then. Weeks has been pretty bad, and Durham’s value is going to come from trotting out that OBP most every day.
by North Side Chicago Expatriate Giants Fan on Jul 20, 2008 1:08 PM PDT up reply actions
Right, but that's all Durham has to offer
Weeks caught fire from August on last year and was one of the best players in the league. He has a lot more potential, and the perception is that he needs to keep playing to reach it.
BCB's "very own marginally deserving all-star!"
what i found on these two
Both are struggling at their levels, Ford as a 22-year old in high A and Hammond as a 26-year old recently promoted to AAA. Good news on Hammond is that his K/9 is high (over 10) and he’s getting unlucky in AAA (BABIP at .333). But he’s giving up a lot of HRs since he got promoted too – 6 in four starts, even though his command looks to be improving. Ford is just struggling: low AVG, low OPS, low SLG. The standout is his speed, already 48 SBS in 59 attempts. That about all I got from looking at their stats at BA.
Hammond's been at AAA for four games and he's got a 20/5 K/BB
His ERA is meaningless at this point.
BCB's "very own marginally deserving all-star!"
I’m sorely tempted to hop on BART and go to the game, but I probably shouldn’t. My wife just left town for a couple of days (Salt Lake City for work, boo hiss), and managing a 2-year old who didn’t sleep well last night for 3 hours at the ballpark alone is probably not the best recipe for fun.
From ESPN
The Milwaukee Brewers have acquired second baseman Ray Durham from the Giants, continuing with their effort in the push to make the playoffs for the first time since 1982.
Durham, 36, is hitting .293 for the Giants, with an on-base percentage of .385, and in theory, he could help the Brewers as a utility player. But it is also very possible that he will press Rickie Weeks, the Brewers’ every-day second baseman to this point, for playing time.
Weeks is hitting .218 with eight homers, and Milwaukee ranks dead last among all teams in batting average for second baseman (.222).
ESPN.com’s Keith Law is reporting that the prospects going to San Francisco are Steve Hammond and Darren Ford. The seriousness of the Durham talks between the Giants and Brewers was reported by the San Francisco Chronicle on Saturday.
The Brewers are in San Francisco this weekend, but Durham is not expected to play for Milwaukee on Sunday.
Hum-baby!
Ray was a good Giant, I’m going to miss him. :(
Matt Cain: He'll save children, but not the Dodger children.
Y’know, with Durham being traded, I was thinking – the Giants have had remarkable stability at second base over the years. Aside from injuries (especially at the end of Robby Thompson’s tenure), we’ve really only had three starting second basemen over the last 23 seasons:
Robby Thompson – 1986-1996
Jeff Kent 1997-2002
Ray Durham 2003-2008
We’d do well to find another second basemen who stick around as long or contributes as much as any of those three.
I wake up late to find Ray Ray traded and that it’s Timmy Day… greatest day of the season?

Reporting Burriss will start at 2nd today and Ochoa will play short. Also, Yabu is apparently going to the DL with a sprained finger (um…..) and Gino Espinelli has been called up.
Eagerly awaiting Crazy Crab Bobblehead Night on 7/18.
If I may be Johnny Whine-a-lot for a moment
Great, they finally sit Vizquel AFTER Burriss is starting at another position anyway.
With Molina posting Vizquel-like numbers lately, I’m tempted to say they should bring up Sandoval to replace him. Probably a bad idea, though. Especially since Sandoval would just rot on the bench as long as Bochy’s around.
Durham was not a "good" Giant
I’ll assess Ray as an okay Giant.
But in many ways he emobodied the decline of Brian Sabean’s acuity in signing free agents.
Expectations were high for this speedy former leadoff guy with some pop, and in nearly six years, he met them only once - 2006. And maybe he exceeded expectations this year because the bar was set so low - by Durham himself with an abysmal 2007.
In his early Giant career, he caused lineup card problems by missing a lot of games because of leg issues, but surprised all by morphing into a power/RBI guy for one weird but fruitful contract year. Now, except for the occasional double, he is nearly punchless while still being a bottom tier defender.
Bye Ray. We’ll hardly miss ya.
Dude, no.
Durham was very good for the Giants ever year but 2007. He missed more time than we all would have liked, yes, but when he played, he was always quite good.
OPS+ as a Giant: 111, 117, 104, 127, 65, 112
The missed time hurt, but if you expected him to have better hitting numbers than those, you had too high of expectations to begin with (his OPS+ numbers before joining the Giants: 114, 105, 103, 106, 118).
Matt Cain: He'll save children, but not the Dodger children.
He met my expectations in everything but playing time until last year. He gave us a lot of offense for a 2B.
He’s been quite good this year.
We all know about the defense. No need to get into that, except to say that could be adequately simulated by dressing a mailbox in a Giants uniform and setting it next to second.
you can't block the Bocock
Madam, yes.
He was paid handsomely and rarely lived up to the promise—and/or a full season.
Most people here give Ray a “B.” He certainly does not deserve an “A.”
My grade is “C.”
And I think he will be missed by few.
I don’t understand giving him a C at all. He gave us well above average production at second base every year except for one. His OPS+ numbers as a Giant were better, in general, than they were as a White Sox.
The only blemish on his time as a Giant (other than his poor 2007) was the missed time. He was a good Giant, an extremely likable person and, considering what we have in the pipeline for second base for the near future, I think he and his above-average hitting production be missed a lot more than you do.
Matt Cain: He'll save children, but not the Dodger children.
Health is always part of the package
I agree he was very likeable.
That helped on the many days, especially when we were contenders, when you couldn’t find him.
;-)
Why isn't the game on extra innings??
I can’t see it anywhere! Now I have to watch on my crappy laptop….Jesse angy Jesse smash!!
imo, only aurilia and roberts are even tradeable. roberts is likely to yield a low-level prospect similar to Ford. nothing of quality. aurilia is trickier. he’s not worth too much more, but we might be able to get a player with a little more upside. maybe a struggling corner player who still has the potential, but hasn’t shown it yet. i don’t know, but it doesn’t seem like we’re going to get much for anyone but Winn and the bullpen guys.
I think Aurilia remains a Giant
And if he goes .260/12/50, Sabean even resigns him.

I’d rather see how both do against ML pitching. But Schierholtz = blocked on the roster. Velez isn’t, he luckily gives versatility to play multiple positions as well.
I think he has a better chance to be an MLB regular than Velez.
It will be interesting to see who makes it into the lineup next year between Schierholtz, Bowker and TI.

All of those other guys are at the point that they need to prove they can hit MLB pitching next year.

As do I. He is a plus defender, he has some patience, and he has some power potential. I think he could be similar to James Loney… .280 15 HR 80 RBI 50 BB, good D.
Shouldn’t Bowker win LF away from Fred, then?

So, can y’all fill me in on why folks are so down on Schierholtz? His minor league numbers look fine to me, though granted I’m not a stat-head. His stint in the big leagues last year wasn’t great, but it wasn’t disastrous enough to give up on the guy, either. I don’t see him as a star, but I don’t see why he can’t be a perfectly serviceable Major Leaguer. What am I missing?
100%
He doesn’t have much power, he doesn’t have much plate discipline, so what the hell is the point?
Re: his short swing, referenced by oldjacket: exactly. It is a clunky, weak contact swing.
Schierholtz, if he is LUCKY, will be Shea Hillenbrand.
by North Side Chicago Expatriate Giants Fan on Jul 20, 2008 1:10 PM PDT up reply actions
His minor league power numbers and OBP look reasonable to me, but that’s probably just the effect of seeing such pathetic power numbers and OBP from our major leaguers recently.
But anyway, yeah, all this is good to know. I’ve sort of been reeducation myself on the minor leagues this year – I’ve been ignoring them the last several years. The franchise has given me a lot of reason to do so.
PCL numbers really should be taken with a grain of salt. The PCL made Pedro Feliz look like a future perennial All-Star.
Better than Bowker or Lewis.
I’m not saying it’s great, I just don’t think, looking at stats alone, it’s unreasonable to think he could b a reasonable major leaguer.
Well thats the thing you can’t just look at stats. He has some major holes in his game that I think will prevent him from being anything other than a platoon player.
you can't just look at stats
Which is why I’m asking y’all about it! I may be second-to-none in my knowledge of bad Giants players from the 80s and 90s, but many McCoven are far more minor league-savvy than I.
what's a what now?

I don’t remember him setting the PCL aflame, but he seems like a prototypical Giant AAAA guy.

Baseball does not require typical “athletic” ability. It requires excellent hand-eye coordination mostly and speed secondarily. Speed meaning, the ability to move parts of your body quickly, to throw or swing a bat.

but it doesn’t look like Tim’s going longer than 5 innings today. Nor should he. Save him for the rest of the season, and the rest of his career. We’re getting swept by the Brewers anyway, because they’re simply much better in every facet of the game than we are.

the ‘short rest’ thing I mentioned, means:
Lincecum keep throwing too many pitches when he’s on the mound, but our hitters help Brewers’ Manny Parra and save his pitches. (you know, “quick outs”) And Lincecum get back to mound and too many pitches again.

I want to blame this crappy umpiring crew for the events of this weekend, but frankly, none of the Giants have looked very sharp—at the plate, in the field, running the bases. Which is pretty inexcusable considering they just had four days of rest and relaxation. The Brewers are playing a lot more aggressively.

I asked the question and Ms Baron was able to post something about the first 3 rounds will be compensated the following year if player is unsigned
I don't know much about Crawford but if I was the Giants, I'd shell out for the other three
BCB's "very own marginally deserving all-star!"
define shell out?
What is Posey says “Not a penny less than $7M”. What should SF then do? And if Dizzy says he wants top 20 monies?
I’d rather they overpay for failed prospects than overpay for Joe Crede this off-season or someone like that. Ugh Zito…
They need to get the talent into the system ASAP, they can’t afford to wait another year to get players in.
Matt Cain: He'll save children, but not the Dodger children.
2008 was supposed to be a thin draft while 2009 has more talent, depth and quality. If/when they sign the players drafted in 2008 they will be signing them to a 2009 contract said Sabean if they signed AFTER the ASG. Rather get top talent than rush to get players in system
they said 2006 was weak and 2007 would be better
then they said 2007 was weak and 2008 would be better
now they say 2008 was weak and 2009 will be better.
Just sign who we have and give them what they want.
Matt Cain: He'll save children, but not the Dodger children.
Well if they would be signed we would have top talent…had they been a priority to sign them quickly, the quicker they can start the development process. They basically lost half a year of development for 4 players, who if signed, likely will have an important part in rebuilding the positional talent of the farm system.
Selfishly I hope you sign them all
The Brewers are going to have six picks in the top two rounds next year, so the less extra picks other teams have, the better.
BCB's "very own marginally deserving all-star!"
Oh yeah?
He’s playing CF some now for West Virginia. He was actually the only one of the Brewers’ top picks to decline an interview with me, ha.
BCB's "very own marginally deserving all-star!"
Yup. Grew up with him, we were on the same Little League Majors team. Talked to him shortly after his promotion to WV, he was excited obviously.
The other WV CF is Lee Haydel
He’s pretty much the white Darren Ford, only without power or patience. I’d love to see Schafer take up CF full-time. How is he defensively?
BCB's "very own marginally deserving all-star!"
There was a guy from my high school who was drafted by the Brewers back in 2000. However, he was a jackass, was drafted in the 49th round, and washed out of the minors within a year, I believe. Way to go, Ryan Nohr.

It's funny
BEcause of y’all, I end up watching terrible games longer than I would otherwise. I was thinking of going out half an hour ago, but I’m still here, typing away to you guys. Bastards.
I do like how that was Tim at not his best and he still only gave up 2 runs in 6 innings (and those runs came under some arguable circumstances.)
Matt Cain: He'll save children, but not the Dodger children.
I still want to trade him. Does anyone honestly think he’ll get much better than he is right now? I’d love to keep him, but trade Lincecum and you can get a major haul that accelerates this rebuilding effort by like 100x. Plus the Giants under this current regime are always going to find good young pitchers.
That’s what everyone says. But if you take an objective look its the best move the franchise could make.
So your perfectly fine with wasting the best years of Lincecum on a shit team and having him flame out by the time the team gets good? Most young pitchers who do THIS well this early on in their ML careers do not last. Might as well sell high now.
yeah, we should have traded him for Rios last offseason

Hinshaw shutting down the side only exacerbates what a bonehead move that was by Bochy keeping Lincecum in there after 110+ pitches. The dude’s getting over the flu, we’re losing the game anyway, he’s given you 6 gutsy innings and you keep him in just for the (slim) chance he’ll get the “W”? Or because you have absolutely no faith in your bullpen to hold the Brewers (a fair concern, but not worth risking The Franchise for)?
No, my Crazy Crab bobblehead is not for sale.

Random, possibly incoherent, thoughts
- I was really pissed that Boch left Lincecum in to start the 7th. I pretty much saw the 3-run homer coming.
- Did the strike zone seem bad on TV? From my vantage point way up in Section 324, it looked like Lincecum was barely getting any calls while anything Parra threw was called a strike.
- There was this older gentleman sitting next to me wearing a leather jacket with “The Intimidator” on the back who had plenty of unintentionally hilarious commentary.
- everyone else was on the same page. I’m not sure Bochy can be forgiven.
- yeah, it was pretty bad
