Giants Sign 16 Year old RHP Mateo
http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/news?slug=txgiantsmateo&prov=st&type=lgns
SAN FRANCISCO (TICKER) —The San Francisco Giants signed 16-year-old Dominican righthander Luis Angel Mateo on Wednesday, the first day international prospects are eligible to sign with major league clubs.
Terms were not disclosed.
The Giants were more than happy to secure the services of the 6-3, 175-pound Mateo.
“The Giants are very pleased to be able to sign Luis Mateo,” said John Barr, the special assistant to general manager Brian Sabean. “He is a young, strong pitcher who shows good command of two pitches with a plus breaking ball. Today is the beginning of the signing season, and we will continue to be aggressive in signing players both domestically and internationally.”
I'll let you experts dissect and discuss. More information would be nice.
OT: Since I've got your attention. I have two tickets to the Giants vs. the Brewers on July 20th. The seats aren't great (View Reserved) but I can't go because I'll be doing the Aids Walk. I'm willing to let them go for free since I didn't pay for them anyway but a small donation (in your name) to sponser me would be appreciated!

Sounds like good news to me. I hope they land Rafael Rodriguez, too, when he turns 16.

Was he [RR] not already sixteen, as previously reported? Or was that retracted?
yeah, well, the whole world stinks, francine -- so get used to it!

Man, I remember when I was 16, it would have been really dumb to give me a bunch of money and sign me to a professional baseball contract even if I could throw a baseball really well.

Really, it would have been REALLY smart to do that to me.
I blame the fact that they didn’t do that for me being poor and unaccomplished today. And for this stain on my shirt. I don’t remember being messy with my chocolate.

Meanwhile, the Padres must have found El Dorado because they are spending money like crazy.
by RougeGorrila on Jul 2, 2008 6:28 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
That’s the money the Padres front office has been collecting (i.e. the payroll will get bigger, we’ll sign more free agents) from the homers who bought into that line for the past four years since Petco Park opened. Nice to see they’re spending some coin in player development that doesn’t involve a high draft pick. Then again, with that new complex in the D.R., they better get some expensive knick-knacks to go with the nice curtains and drapes. I guess this spending spree might quell the lynch mob for a few days…maybe.

The lynch mob will be distracted in about one month when the Chargers camp opens.

Well...
After they got swept…and pretty thoroughly…by the Mariners, even their biggest supporters went into the kitchen for the butcher knives. If the D-Backs didn’t blow and were about eight games above .500, the Mads would be about 17 games back.
Yeah, that mob can’t wait for Charger training camp. Then again, they might go psycho in a Watts riot sort of way if a few heads don’t roll in the Padre castle, where no one has done no wrong in the building of this crapfest.

Second year! I’ll possibly be hobbled because of a calf issue I’ve had since May, but come hell or high water, I’m walking that thing. I’m technically on a team called Team Shooter but right now it’s just me and a friend. We walk in honor of Rod Beck, who did so much for Until There’s a Cure Day.

It really is a wonderful event. It’s so necessary to do what we can to help the people affected by HIV/AIDS, and I love that the money raised is for the whole spectrum of care: from treatments for the disease itself to education and awareness about the disease.
On the other hand it’s really sad that we have to keep doing it every year. It’s sad because there’s no cure, but I’ll walk every year until I’m dead if that means we get closer to a cure.

It always attracts your garden variety asshats. One dude last year camped out near the start line and he had a shitty bullhorn thing he used to yell at us that our sodomy was the reason for AIDS and we were all bound for hell and we’d better repent. This gay couple walking ahead of us, holding hands, turned around and yelled at the guy “YOU NEED A BLOWJOB”
I gave those guys an A+

6' 3" 175 lbs?
I’m surprised the Warriors didn’t draft him to play power forward.
I guess skinny pitchers are all the rage now. Maybe the Giants are trying to find another freak.

Interesting link with some info
Here is an article from saberscouting. In the comments section the agent for Rafael Rodriguez posts to answer questions. Before you think that he’s full of it he’s called every move so far before they happened.

Yeah, that was a pretty interesting thread. For those too lazy to click through, Rodriguez’s agent(?) says he has better pitch recognition than Joel Guzman did at the same age, meaning he’s less likely to be a bust; he has good bat speed but a slightly long swing; he’s athletic with an above-average arm; and he’s not completely fooled by breaking balls.
He also says the Giants appear committed to Latin America, with perhaps a big signing every year.

Intriguing Signing...
...my father says he heard someone on KNBR saying Mateo throws 100 MPH, but I can find no confirmation of that.
I can find almost nothing on Mateo online.
